Do you need a defensive midfielder these days?

Most teams need and have them, but for United, Not so much, i remember SAF said that he never had an out and out holding/defensive midfielder, that the likes of Keane came close but really couldn't do the job as Dm.

The united way always had this notion of to become a United midfielder you have to posses a passing ability, like able to hit those long range passes and show a good vision and they weren't gonna sacrifice that for some hard tacklers who didn't posses similar traits. So if you look at list players who played there before they were more of deep-lying play maker rather than Out and out DM, for me Carrick was the Best at the role.

Again i'd say those type of players really suited the old united way of playing, always had to rely on somebody from the deep to hit first time long range passes to wingers or fullbacks so they put in quick crosses in the box for strikers. But football has evolved so much even before SAF retired and once he was gone, we have played under three/ four different managers each with different playing styles and different from the old united way.

So maybe now that the playing style has changed having a proper defensive Midfielder may make sense though i don't think is a must given the midfielder players we have at the moment.

If Butt wasn't a CDM then I don't know who was. Also: Fletcher, Phil Jones, and sometimes John O'Shea. Then Carrick. SAF did not always employ a specialist CDM but often favoured destroyers before he got Carrick. Butt's ball distribution was awful compared to modern CDMs. Mere destroyers are no longer good enough.
