Duncan Edwards: The Man Who Could Have Been.

Not sure if you older guys can verify this, but my grandad said he was at a match where United won a penalty.
Apparently, up stepped Duncan to take it and he hit it that hard that it hit the back of the net and bounced back out, the ref not giving the goal because he thought it had hit the post.

Stange factoid: Duncan was fined 10 shillings for riding his bicycle without lights at night.

Sounds like urban folklore

There's a book entitled simply Duncan Edwards (iirc) which is sometimes on sale round the back of Red Star on matchdays. It contains a brief bio and what is obviously the text of a short book by Dunc himself about playing football.

I've recently picked up a copy and sent it on to Rob Bowman - can't find my copy at the mo.

Not Vidic, Edwards was a midfielder, and a lot more skillful and quicker

Probably Keano was the closest we've had in recent years, but as I said, my dad regarded Gerrard as the most similar player around to him

Sounds a bit more Robson than Keane in Utd terms.

Aside: when Gerrard was first coming through, I really admired him. When did he turn into such a cúnt?

Read the thread in the Classics SiYuan, Julian Denny and others will tell you more than I can

If you read Bobby Charlton's book though, he came up against Edwards playing for the army or air force or something during National Service, possibly before even coming to United, i'm not sure, and says he was incredible even then

Edwards book "Tackle Soccer This Way" is a well known book and come up for sale on ebay from time to time....

When Charlton arrived at Old Trafford in 1953, Edwards was already at Ol Trafford and had not yet been conscripted to do National Service...

I'm not being funny mate but I saw Bobby Moore play quite a few times. Whilst I've already commented on how highly Duncan Edwards was regarded by those old enough to really know he wasn't a defender he was a midfielder (although I acknowledge he played centre half now and again). I can assure you Bobby Moore is probably the best defender this country has ever produced.

He would have got into ANY England side.

RIP the pair of 'em.

Duncan rarely if ever played centre-half..........
