Aside from the disheartening transfer window we've just had, our recent results have also given little cause for optimism, with a large number of players receiving heavy criticism for their performances.

Yet, optimists some still are. I thought it might be interesting to take this low point in our season as an opportunity for posters who are not opposed to eating their words later to state, unequivocally, players whom they believe will prove the doubters wrong. Or right - or, if you want, pour cold water on players receiving praise should the time come. To start it off:

Will prove doubters wrong:
  • Maguire
  • Lindelof
  • Pogba
  • Lingard (I'm not not serious)
Will prove doubters right:
  • Bailly
You don't have to defend/explain your choice. Just make sure to avoid the new signings until they have played for us (and if they are actually under fire for their performance). You can edit by adding new takes, but please resist the urge to change existing ones.

...How many times does Ole needs to prove doubters wrong?
He sadly won’t ever be that top top manager that returns the good old days. He has though done a decent job of restoring some semblance of normality, but he lacks that tactical acumen and in game management to really propel this current squad to start challenging Citeh & Pool. I think the writing is on the wall for his time and that Poch (or whom ever) has a better platform to start from.

I m waiting for Ole to prove me wrong. He didn’t get His world class signing(maybe in January he might like he did Bruno), but he still has a strong team, better than everyone beside liverpool. Now it is up to him to show us that he can build a cohesive unit and put On better performance. Third is the minimum requirement for this season, and a trophy as well.

Proved wrong:
If he has doubters then Greenwood will prove them wrong. Very bright future.
Maguire will be solid enough after a terrible month or so!
Bruno will find form again
VDB will prove a good addition

Proved Right:
Pogba - ultimately doesnt want to be here and shows little interest.
De Gea - seems crazy to say at 29 but Just not what he once was and his strengths are ones that dont “age” well as a keeper.
Shaw.
McTominay will end up at a bottom half premier league club.

I have doubts about Pogba, we're still fecking idiots for playing him out of position for almost 2 years straight.

Are we just listing our favourite and least favourite players? Because aside from perhaps Bruno every single player in the squad has doubts around them, inc Greenwood for goodness sake.

I don't know what the threshold is for proving us right/wrong but I absolutely think there will be a point this season where the majority opinion on here is that Harry Maguire is a very good player for us.

Will prove Doubters wrong:

Maguire - he’s getting his lion’s share of abuse and rightfully so, but he’s a good defender just stuck with a ridiculous price tag

Martial - was our best forward last season. The suspension may actually help him refocus and get fit again. The lack of preseason definitely hurt him.

Cavani - He’s getting slated cause he isn’t Sancho but he’s coming here with a lot to prove. He can bring the type of world class experience we desperately need.

Rashford - he was our best player last season until the injury. His goal against Brighton shows he’s reaching world class levels.

Will Prove Doubters Right:

Pogba - he is what he is, a flop who seems to buckle under pressure.

Shaw - thanks Luke for pressuring the club to sign your replacement.

Lindelof - he’s made a comedy of errors for a while now and I don’t think he could rediscover his form here until the manager is gone or if he signs elsewhere.

De Gea - thank you for saving us for so many years but it’s over lad.

I think this is fair and reasonable. I agree with most of it.

I personally have some hope for both Pogba and DDG, but they are both drinking from the last chance saloon. Pogba will never be the player we hoped he would, and so will already have doubters. But I think there is an effective and very good version of Pogba that we can get to work. He will never be a world class player, but can do a hell of a lot better than what we see currently.

AWB (some hating on him, but he's great defensively)
Bailly ...maybe...

Will prove doubters right:
Maguire
DeGea
Lindelof (already done imo)
Fred

I'm amazed there are still so many people who believe theres a good defender somewhere inside Eic Bailly.

The fact his credentials have been questioned on numerous occasions this last few years kind of tells you why.
He was as qualified to manage this club as I am of running Apple.

Will prove doubters right:

Maguire
Shaw
Lindelof
James
Rashford

Will prove doubters wrong:

AWB (on edge of both for me)
Pogba (will probably be at his next club though - we'll see how poorly Ole has utilized him)

Not sure why Greenwood is on anyone's list, I feel like he shouldn't have any doubters based on performance and age...

A very good question. Consider this. All or most of the above players were the same that produced some of the best games seen for a fair few seasons after January this year. I’ve no idea why they all suddenly became Sunday League standard over the last four weeks. Lack of leadership from Ole? Doom and gloom from the top by not getting in quality young ambitious players? I doubt if any top top player will bother coming if they want to improve their careers now. Take a pay check for a couple of seasons yes, but we can kiss goodbye to getting Sancho now.
I hope all they players mentioned will find some pride and put a shift in, if they don’t, mid-table beckons.
