Can use Apartheid era money to dig yourself to the moon, though, if you're heavily subsidized by the state.

Fairly certain somebody uttered the words "freeze all motor functions" just before that photo was taken.

Sorry, are you saying he hasn't laundered his name through his foundation? I don't know how old you are, but you registered on the Caf in 2001, so you should be well aware of the terrible reputation Bill Gates had before he started his charitable work, and the good reasons for that terrible reputation. Unless you think he did it because he just cares so much, in which case we return to the fact that Gates is worth a lot more than when he started the foundation.
I'm well aware of Gates' reputation as a businessman, I've read the biographies of his time at MS. He was ruthless, extremely driven, feared and also very smart. But he wasn't a gangster or anything. He also left MS when it became clear he wasn't the best person to take it forward as technology began to change. I don't think Gates started the foundation because he cared about what people thought about him - if you've really read about Gates you will know he is not wired that way at all. He started it because he was looking for something new to do, worthy of his resources.

Tesla market cap passed one trillion. A luxury car brand with a niche market. Absolutely mad.
Bitcoin based in a old technology passed one trillion too. And dogecoin, a memecoin has 35 billion cap. access to markets in just one click, converted the most popular financial assets in a casino. straight legal gambling

Elon is good for his shareholders. Made close to six figures on Tesla alone and I'd love to throw it all for shares of Space X in the secondary
I just don't see the valuation in the stock as congruent with reality.

Tesla's share of the EV market is down 21% this year and its stock is up 43% YTD. There's no tangible new product they have introduced during that period. So unless long term investors are banking on the cheaper Model 2, combined with the Cyber Truck to boost the stock higher, I would say its no more than $200-300 stock. It being $900 is all Musk related hype.

Agreed. People are irrationally betting on Elon, not on any fundamentals or sensible projections. Just pointing out the stock has been on a ridiculous uptrend for close to a decade and his investors have been richly rewarded. Also traders have made a killing on Tesla options, primarily in long calls and put spreads. Some hedge fund PM's I know have been gobbling up Space X shares in the secondary, in the hopes that once it goes public it will trade even more irrationally than Tesla.

Elon is a dickhead, but I wouldn't bet against him.

One hypothesis on the continued rise may have to do with people banking Elon will get the cheaper Model 2 on the market soon, which will make Tesla a dominant player in the cheap, mid range (3,Y & Cybertruck) and luxury (S, X, & Roadster) markets. When coupled with their charging infrastructure and continued mega deals with the likes of Hertz, it could make for a compelling reason to stay in.

Historicallly, however the stock has been incredibly unstable and prone to wild swings each time Elon says something provocative - such as a few years back when he said “Yeah, I think our stock price is a little high at the moment”, after which it tanked overnight and stopped a lot of people out.

First person ever to have a net worth of over 300B. Tesla stock has been behaving even crazier than anyone expected.

The stock has nothing to do with the company at this stage. As I mentioned in the other thread, it increasing for 250B because of Hertz news makes no sense considering that Hertz has a market cap of only 12B. So it is beyond absurd.

At this stage, Tesla’s stock is more similar to Bitcoin and other crypto, rather than the stock of other companies.

Of course, for investors it does not matter as long as they make good money out of it. And they are going to do so, until in the next big recession. At this stage, they could stop selling cars entirely and the stock is just gonna go up.

Definitely agree for SpaceX. If/when it goes public, assuming that we are in a boom economy, it is gonna be even crazier than Tesla.

He's hardly serious about this. He's just being a prick because he knows they can't prove 6B will do anything of the sort isn't he?
I feel the title 'vanquisher of world hunger' for 2% of his wealth would be quite tempting for him

He sounds serious, there are a couple of other tweets he makes about this, something about open accounting of the funds.

It's a silly claim and he's just calling them out - which is fair game in my opinion

How people can idolize someone who is such an overt prick is truly beyond me.

Is it the same sort of small man syndrome that led to people idolizing Trump?

My best mate who is a smart, sensible and critical guy is completely in love with Elon Musk. I mock him endlessly over his moronic level of, what I can only describe with the gutwrenchingly shite term, fanboiing. He knows it and doesn't care
It's one of life's great mysteries.

I don't think he's wrong to call their bluff. That said I wouldn't mind him and the others doing more philantropy.

He could also, you know, give the money away anyway, even if it doesn't completely "solve world hunger", because an amount like that may help a bit. He is not going to and yes, he's calling that bluff, but he is also being sickeningly obnoxious about it, as per.
