The flawed decision by UEFA to dilute the competitive nature of the European Championship by increasing the number of competing nations from 16 to 24 for France 2016 and beyond is understood to have been instigated by Scotland’s David Taylor and the Republic of Ireland’s John Delaney, who championed the smaller countries in Europe. England’s UEFA executive member Geoff Thompson opposed the change.
