They came fifth in jury vote, so that isn’t true. It would likely have been a contender and top five finisher even without the war. I personally like the song and have listened to it a lot, even before I knew it was the Ukrainian Eurovision entry.
I agree with this.

I liked Ukraine's entry, proper catchy refrain, and lovely folksy hook.

Just listened to UA's entry last year, quality tune, bit of techno that was completely missing tonight.

This entirely.
Although France nearly made up for it...

439 from total 468 audience points, it will mean a world to Ukraine, trust me. Their song was top 3/5 material.

I mean Moldova even got 200+ points from the public with a lower common denominator song in the same style. Sure, Ukraine got a lot of solidarity points, but they had a good song and generally place well at Eurovision regardless.

Meanwhile…

My wife was in complete tears and not ones of joy either. There would have been a lot of Ukrainians looking for validation that Europe supports them this evening.

UK won the neutral jury vote, Ukraine won the public sympathy vote. I think that's a moral victory of sorts.

Not gonna begrudge Ukraine their win, though. Eurovision has never been a song contest. It's always been is a campy political popularity contest. That's the game.

Still, it's nice to see that the UK aren't as hated as they used to be. I think Brexit has actually helped us in that regard. Whereas we used to be a big player on the European stage that threw its weight around, now we're the small fry that's getting tossed around by the EU instead.

It seems like Germany have taken the mantle of being the Europe's baddies again (withholding support from Ukraine and delaying the decision on gas imports from Russia).
I think you reading too much into the politics. The UK did well because they had a decent song for once. Germany did shit, as they have done for eight of the last nine times, because they entered more completely forgettable shit.

Political voting is part of Eurovision, but it is way overplayed. The volatility in the results annually show that the song and performances are what drive the results for the most part.

Wasn’t really a fan of the Ukraine song, but if it went to anyone else then it would have been wrong. Solidarity.

I was thinking about this earlier on. My Flatmates are Brazilians over learning English for a couple of years and had never heard of Eurovision. Slight language barrier but it took me ages to explain to them that these lads were taking a break from fighting to sing and they'd be going straight back. They kept assuming they'd misunderstood me. It's a sobering thought, alright.

I didn’t follow the contest. Just heard the UA song now after reading about it being “political”. It’s of great quality. Certainly well worthy of winning a Eurovision.

And, yes thank Heavens there is sympathy voting for Ukraine among the public.

If I were Ukraine, I’d want to win on merit

I know the intention was good but I'd feel disrespected that they felt they had to let me win

Odd to see that some took the loss against Italy better than getting second at the Eurovision.

Not sure if Eurovision is ever won "on merit", and there are far worse reasons to be made winners than this year's.

Yeah, I mean, even the Ukrainan song which won it in 2004 was far worse than this one.

Ukraines song was absolute dogshit. Great for them to win it on a pity vote because they got blown up by Russia. It’s basically a Make-A-Wish victory. Your song’s shit but we feel sorry for you. Actually feel bad for the UK for actually having the best song for once and it comes in a year when a little country got invaded by Russia.

I see Amy Wadge was a co-writer on the the UK entry. She’s Ed Sheeran‘s main co-writer.

Im not sure why people take this seriously. It’s literally a shit song competition.

Even in the Eurovision thread UK folks manage to make it all about themselves, amazing stuff

I mean, you literally pay to be in the contest unlike other countries who had to go through qualifying, and yet people talk about what's fair

These posts are weird. We were robbed, but it's all a laugh. Being snobby and snotty about Eurovision is always baffling, it's a bit of over the top nonsense.

But we were robbed.

How can you say that UK got robbed? You were 5th in televoting. No way saying how the points would have been spread if it wasn't for Ukraine. Spain and Sweden may have easily been ahead of you even without Putin robbing you.
