Ezequiel Garay

Should we save our money this year for a Gundogan & Hummels raid for next year and settle for a Cabaye/Fellaini/Bale triple swoop for this season?

Settle? If we land those 3 I'd be dripping.

I kind of feel for the player, constantly hearing himself linked with United for the past half a year, and nothing materialising. Also the fact the majority of fans have expressed their disinterest in signing him.

He's earning a shitload of money playing for a very prestigious club that reached a major European final this past season. I think he'll be fine, no need for us to shed tears. I'm also fairly sure he has no clue whether the Caf wants him or not.

On a more serious note, he doesn't have to judge this story by half-assed press speculation. Unlike us, he actually knows the facts so I'm sure he knows why he's not a United player and if he has any chance of becoming one.

When is a done deal not done, when it has been talked about for longer than the rumoured interest in Sneijder and still he has not been announced as a signing. Many many signings have already occurred in the transfer window. If this was so wrapped up then surely it would have been finalised and announced.

I think this is about as done as the articles saying Thiago had signed for us on a 5 year contract with £90k wages.

11/08/2013: Ezequiel Garay has emerged as a target for Napoli but the Daily Star Sunday feels he could end up staying at Benfica with United refusing to meet his £21.5million asking price. "I am tired of the rumours," the defender admitted. "I am just focused on Benfica and I will keep working hard. I have heard nothing official from United."

That's from the transfer talk section on manutd.com

Good, good. The third done deal (after Gaitan and Strootman) that was never done in the first place. Today's journos are full of shit.

It never made any sense to begin with. We were linked with this "done deal" back in Feb, and once we left for pre-season without Garay and with Rio and Vidic both still around, that deal was a clear nothing story. With Moyes deciding deals now (more or less), it is clear defence is probably as strong as our attack. Midfield is our problem (unsurprisingly).

Oh no, we're going to sign him again! Do we have enough spare shirts numbers left for each of these signings?

So we've bid more than his release clause?

Riiiiiight....

Smokescreen. Mendes uses "interest" from us, with our permission (ie, we don't deny interest), to earn his clients better wages or coax out interest from other clubs. In return we get Ronaldo.

Simple.

Seems like Rio is fit enough to play one more season, which is awesome, plus Michael Keane could get some chances.

Even if Moyes is interested in this deal, it's very far from priority.

So apart from maybe shoddy easy journalism, what's the cause behind this rumour? Does anybody know if United increased their scouting in Portugal dramatically last season or is it purely something out of the blue?

Knew this wouldn't happen. It's been a "done deal" for how many months now? About 18?

At this point, I would way more like the idea of seeing Moyes, pursuing Kurt Zouma's signature.

Should cost less, defending style in the mood of Vidic's, potential to become way better than Garay and body build of a tank, already in the age of 18.

Didn't Barcelona pay a bit more for Thiago too, even with the VAT included?

A release clause can only be activated with immediate payment of the full amount. If a club wishes to pay by instalments then they still have to negotiate. Or they may wish to pay more because they think the player is worth more and they want to maintain good relations with the selling club, or have other deals such as preference in future stars, etc. A release clause activation is an unfriendly gesture. I don't know what was the specific situation with Nani, but his clause was 20m and United paid 25.5m (euros).

Garay will have to put the house they photographed him buying in Manchester up for sale now we have accepted defeat.

No, we still shaking on that gentlemens agreement.

That might explain the transfer window - neither the Equaliser nor his opposite number wanted to lose face by breaking eye contact first during the handshake.

A moment silence for Portuguese reports of Garay's transfer being imminent.

Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay has claimed he was set to sign for Manchester United last summer, until David Moyes replaced Sir Alex Ferguson as manager at Old Trafford.

Argentine defender Garay was persistently linked with a move to the Premier League champions in the first half of 2013, with his suspicion that a deal would have been signed were it not for a change of manager at United an intriguing twist on the transfer story.
"I believed I was going to join Manchester United in the summer and the deal was nearly closed, but finally Benfica did not accept the offer," Garay is quoted in the Daily Mirror.
"I believe the exit of Ferguson has influenced the deal. Moyes did not believe in me as much but that's not a problem.
"I am happy at Benfica and have a lot of dreams and ambitions for this season. Now I only think about the present which is Benfica but it's never possible to discard anything in the future."
Barcelona have also been linked with a move for Garay in recent months and he may well be the subject of transfer speculation once again in the run-up to the January transfer window.

Attention whoreing, nothing more. I am guessing he heard all that from newspapers too, so he thought he was defintely going to United.
