This is where I issue my apology I suppose. Although I do only do it to make fun of whoever's going to e-war at the moment.
I would hope the crackdown extends across all forums like Brophs mentioned. The General did get a little crazy, but sometimes crazy is alright. The football forums have reached the point where a lot of sensible people with a lot of insight to provide are just avoiding it altogether because the tone is so oppressive.

Sometimes you can get so frustrated with a poster being unable to understand your point you say something inappropriate.
Outbursts are always going to happen. I hope people take heed of the vibe and don't force the admins and mods to be too proactive. One of the things I admired most about the caf when I signed up first was the 'quiet' nature of the administration and the almost self policing of the posters. Totally irreverant but aware of a line. Maybe it's up to the posters to give a nod every now and then as to what's cool. I did it today and I think the poster deleted his thread. Sometimes you post something that you think is alright that maybe isn't and you'd realise if someone pointed it out, but the tendency lately is to run with anything in the hope you get away with it for as long as possible. This forces the admins to take action, making it a bigger deal than it is.

I'd also like to point out that everyone should be treated in the same way. No matter if you have 75,000 posts or 3,000. If you break the rules, then you get time out.
Theres alot of regular posts in here who do wind people up, theres alot of name calling and bickering. Not everyone is going to get on well together, perhaps people should start using the ignore feature a bit more?
I can agree with the stance in the general, ot was getting pretty out of control. But i'm not sure I agree about editing/deleting peoples posts in the United/football forum. Everyone has an opinion, If I think Berbatov is shit and should be sold then i'll damn well say it. It may upset some people, but i'm not looking for a reaction, it's an opinion, my opinion. There are far too many people in such forums that take such a sweeping statement as a slap across their own face and will call you all names under the sun because they don't agree. That in my opinion is wrong. I hope these type of posters get just as much punishment as those pushing their own agendas.

That statement is not a problem in the Berbatov thread, as far as I'm concerned. As you say, we all have our own views.
It becomes a problem when we have threads that have nothing to do with Berbatov degenerating into people moaning about how shit he is, and generally turning every thread into another Berbatov (or whoever) scapegoat thread. I noticed in a thread last week a discussion about a player at another club who is being linked with us descended into a bunch of people slagging off Berbatov, as he'd cost a relatively similar fee, despite not playing in the same position.

Yes but just posting a comment saying, 'Berbatov is shit' adds nothing to the discussion and comments similar to that are far too commonplace in the United and football forums, and one liners like that are said for a reaction. If you explained why you think he's shit (He's clearly not shit, but anyway) and went a bit more in depth that I think most wouldn't mind that, it's just those who will waltz in, post a sentence, then go back out.
It's not how you debate anyway. I used to love debates in school, I love debating with friends, it does often get heated but that's half the fun of it. Then you come away hopefully both having learned something but both still thinking you're right regardless.
I don't want to step on any toes either, but my humble opinion is that we are promoting too many "general" posters. I don't see the newbies so maybe I am wrong, but I think a lot of the newbies coming up are in the same mould, young posters posting in-jokes keeping mostly to the general. Get enough of them and it becomes way too much.
My personal opinion is that we should try to promote those who contribute first and foremost in the footballing forums. But like I said, perhaps this is already done.

They both ran their course and were getting increasingly difficult to navigate. Its normally preferable if a topic be addressed in one thread, but when the threads occasionally get very long or in Hernandez's case run their course since the Chicharito WC Watch period is over, its time to put them to bed and start news ones.

On the note of too many general posters (I would definitely come under that description), when I was in the newbies there was a group of us who all posted alot in the general, but also had alot of serious and detailed discussion on various topics in the football forum aswell.
Personally, there isnt too much post World Cup that I feel the need to air my opinion on. I dont know as much about the finances as other posters, and I try not to indulge in too much transfer speculation. I would imagine there are alot of other people here who are in the same situation as me, so end up posting more in the general forum (and to a lesser extent, the entertainment forum). In my opinion, the more people getting involved in the banter in the general, the higher the risk that someone will step over the mark, and the higher chances that the mods will miss it, and this will create a snowball effect where the standards really do slip (posting upskirt pics of Emma Watson for example).
Once the new season starts, I think alot of people will spend more time in the Football and United forums, and the balance will be restored. It doesnt hurt to have a tightening of the rules with regards NSFW content though

Its always like that. Summer time is usually an orgy of muppetry in the transfer and gen forums, which was somewhat mitigated this year due to the WC. Once mid August rolls around, everyone will keep busy on all things United again.
Well said. This is made worse when people say things like "well anyone with half a brain would see that ___" and hurl other insults at other posters calling them things like "deluded" without bothering to ask the other side to elaborate.
Half the time people resort to insults before anyone bothers to ask for details. An example would be discussions about video replay. We have people who think we needed (where I stand) and people who think it'll slow the game down too much. Both opinions are certainly valid but sometimes when someone brings up the latter one, people just pounce on them without first asking some pretty important questions like
1) How long does this person think is too long?
2) Would certain things like time limits alleviate some concerns? etc
These are concerns that would have to be addressed before any major changes could be made so it's important to have this discussion, yet everyone wants to just jump on people for having the audacity to disagree or raise concerns. Then after attacking people for exercising free speech, they'll hide behind free speech to justify their insults.
And we're all guilty of it to some extent but there are definitely repeat offenders who are more aggressive than others.
This is my fourth summer on the forum as a member so I know that people travel to the general now. I look in there now a lot myself.

I never really posted in the general much during the footy season, but things up here are moving so slow, a single match could cover 3 days of the off season, now that the World Cup is over it's worse.

The thing with the newbies is a complicated situation in a way. If you check out the new official Manchester United Facebook page you'll get an idea as to how the football forum tends to look down there. Posters get easily frustrated with the rubbish that is spouted around there and eventually take solace in the general forum.
I know, in relation to myself anyway, that I signed up for this site to discuss football and only football. I wasn't even aware of a general forum, I'd never viewed the site before registering. I made a few dozen posts in the football forum, but due to the high amount of traffic and the overwhelming lack of common sense in a large number of posters made it an unenjoyable experience.
So I found myself posting in the general a lot more than I anticipated. I think I was only repped twice for posts in the football forum overall, not due to a lack of intelligence on the subject (I hope) but due to the fact that I posted in it so sparingly it was impossible to be noticed. When I was promoted, my introduction post said something along the lines of me being delighted that I could get back to posting about football but strangely I felt a lack of experience made posting in the "mains" football forum of United forum a daunting task.
I'm sure a number of other newbies in recent times will agree with me. I feel like I'm beginning to spout shite myself now, but I know for a fact that most of the lads being promoted that you are referring to have a very good knowledge of the game they just have got out of the habit of expressing that. A clean up of the newbie football forum is what's needed, but obviously it's something almost impossible to implement.
Basically, there's too many twats here.
With regards to the newbie football forum I personally would seperate them into a United one and a football one. That in itself would make things a lot better. If you merged the United forum, Football Forum and Transfer forums in the mains it'd just be one big, convoluted mess, and I think that's the trouble with the newbie football forum. Or at least it was when I was able to see it.
That's exactly what I was going to suggest but I thought I'd be pushing my luck telling these lads what to do and I'm 99% sure they'd have discussed it before.
Would they have to move a bunch of threads if they did that? That seems like a lot of work to have to do.
If there were any major discussions going on about United players going on or ticket discussion threads they could be moved, but there's such a high number of duplicate threads that they wouldn't be sorely missed if they weren't transferred over.
Deleting the Epic Asses thread was the right thing to do imo, controlling what people say in the general would be bad as it's already fighting to stay relative active...even though the recent trend is to post a lot but not really anything interesting or amusing. I would delete the newbies memoirs thread as it's one of the worst threads on here.
