Females in TV Shows

A question. Why are female characters (specifically the lead females) so damn annoying in TV shows? Here's some examples (will contain spoilers);

Lori - The Walking Dead

Sleeps with Rick's best mate and then lectures Rick about telling the truth. Tells him to sort out Shane and when Rick does, she throws a hissy fit. Lets her son run into trouble and then blames Rick, who is busy killing zombies. Cant even drive a bloody car down a straight road without crashing. Such an annoying little shit

Laurel - Arrow

Annoying slag whore jumping between Oliver and his best mate Tommy constantly. Tell Tommy she loves him and then spreads her legs for Oliver the next day. Is told by Oliver AND her dad to not stay in the Glades because there is a fecking BOMB about to blow and she just stands around and gets trapped, causing Tommy to save her and die. Has no respect for her dad. Such a cnut!

Margaret Schroeder - Boardwalk Empire

Tries to play the innocent and naive widow and always judging characters when in reality, she keeps quiet about her husband being killed for some money. She gets into bed with the man who orders the kill. Then goes and gives away this mans land! And THEN still goes around judging people!

Elena - Vampire Diaries

Where do I start. Constantly playing two brothers against each other. Always crying and moaning. Always talking about how everyone she loves dies but in reality, if she just killed herself, all these people would have survived. Never listens to instructions and gets more people killed. Non-stop breakdowns. Arrgghh!

Skylar - Breaking Bad

The worst of the lot. I dont even want to explain this one as it pisses me off even thinking about it! Anyone that has seen Breaking Bad knows exactly why she is a douche.

So there's some... anyone care to explain why writers torment us like this?

Because all of the writers are nerdy, ivy league graduates whose only knowledge of women comes from the internet, old VHS porno tapes and the occasional crack whore?

I think I saw it explained before that the reason characters like Skylar and Betty annoy viewers is because they stand in the way of the main character's plans and desires. It would be completely unrealistic for them to enable Walt and Don but that's what we want to see.

It's silly to look at that type of character and think of it as all women in tv shows though. Everyone loves Peggy, everyone hates Pete.

I think Lori is the worst by far.
When she died, it was pretty much the best moment of the entire season. Made people actually like Carl as well.

Shoot me I know but Carmela Soprano is doing my head in now too. I'm half way through season 5 and she's painful to watch.

It's something that I've only really noticed recently, and maybe it is down to the fact that so many of the writers are men with limited experience of woman. Perhaps a few more female writers for the big shows would be a help.

I doubt it. The characters are shit because they're not a true reflection of woman IMO and that's down to poor writing mainly by male writers.

The best of them all is Kim Bauer in season 2 of 24. Gets her leg trapped in a cougar trap! TV peaked at that moment and has never been as good since then.

Vampire Diaries is an awful show on it's own though, so I don't think it's fair to single out the female character, it's not like the male characters are that much better anyways. Same goes for Arrow.

Starbuck, Veronica Mars, CJ Cregg, Scully, Xena, Sydney Bristow, etc, etc..

There are tons of great female characters.

You are right about Whedon though, he loves a strong female character.

Walking Dead holds the record for most annoying female characters ever. I think the lot of them are terrible.

You've just named a few annoying female characters. Meanwhile, the brilliant one's tend to outweigh and out number the annoying one's, so I'm not really seeing your point. There's also more annoying male characters than female.

To add an annoying one, Phoebe from Friends. She had her moments and all, but yeah, fecking annoying for a good part of the show.

I really dislike the new woman and Garcia on Criminal Minds. Wasn't a fan of Prentiss either, but if you avoided looking at her nose, she really did have a great rack.

Claudette from The Shield was a bitch and easily the worst.

It's pretty easy to do this one for men as well. The thing is that in a non Grey's Anatomy-ish type of show you won't see many female leads. Hollywood's reasons for that are still the same. People won't enjoy it. Despite Alien, Buffy, Xena etc. proving otherwise.

Prentiss' rack is amazing. And I agree about the new one, seriously? She's decrepit. Garcia is fun but I wouldn't touch her with Rossi's weiner.

Now, if you say anthing bad about JJ I'll ban you.

All of that has come from one bad episode! :lol:

I agree though, that episode left her in a very bad light. The writing of her character in that episode was awful, whilst every other character had their best performance!

She'd never disrespected her dad.
She'd never fecked about with Oliver or Tommy.
And, err, she'd never remained in the glades despite an imminent attack. Obviously.

Up until mid-way to three quarters through she was the strongest character of the lot to be honest. Speedy (or whatever her name is) was a moany little teenager, Oliver was a slightly annoying; I'm on a vendetta which half the time makes no sense and neither do I. Felicity was alright. Tommy was the most annoying character of the lot.

I agree about Skylar becoming fecking annoying in season 5 but before that you couldn't exactly blame her.

Having an unplanned preganancy, a mentally challenged child, a husband who has terminal cancer and a husband who she later finds out is a drug producer and has continually lied to her. Slightly annoying but you could sympathize with her imo
