Most likely another bullshit rumour, yet it'll be interesting to see if Torres commits his future to Anfield this summer amid all the unrest at Liverpool. Doubt Roman would spend that much on a single player, but I fully expect City to go after him and spare no expense if Torres ever becomes available.

Chelsea have made a dramatic move for Fernando Torres that they hope will catch Manchester City cold and take the Liverpool striker to Stamford Bridge for a British record transfer fee that could reach £70million.

Sportsmail understands preliminary discussions have already taken place, with the outcome of those meetings positive enough to convince Roman Abramovich that he will beat his big-spending rivals at Eastlands to the 26-year-old Spaniard.

Chelsea owner Abramovich has been relatively quiet in the transfer market by his own extravagant standards since Jose Mourinho left. But the success and stability Carlo Ancelotti has brought, achieved with an attacking style Abramovich appreciates, have convinced the club’s Russian billionaire to make another stellar signing.

Chelsea can secure their third Barclays Premier League title during Abramovich’s tenure with the right result at home to Wigan on Sunday — before then chasing a possible domestic Double with the FA Cup final the following weekend — and Abramovich now wants to add the extra quality to the side that will enhance their chances of finally winning the Champions League.

Chelsea are not afraid to sign Liverpool’s best players. In 2005 and 2006 they went close to luring captain Steven Gerrard from Anfield and now they are sure they will succeed with the player named in the FIFPro World XI for the last two years and ranked third behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka at the FIFA World Player of the Year gala for 2008.

Amid the chaos at Anfield, fears have already been expressed that Torres, who joined from Atletico Madrid for around £20m in 2007, will leave Liverpool this summer.

It was only last year that he made a commitment to the Merseysiders by signing a new four-year contract worth £110,000-a-week.

But the Liverpool landscape has since changed significantly, with under-fire manager Rafa Benitez now on the verge of leaving for Juventus, yet more uncertainty over the future ownership of the club, and the team’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League hanging over Anfield.
 
I think Chelsea will move early for him and Liverpool would probably be prepared to let him go there rather than any other prem club. Another nail in the Liverpool coffin
 
Drogba and Torres would make quite a formidable partnership. I wonder if Ancellotti would sucessfully be-able to accommodate the 2 strikers. I hope not :nervous:
 
Seems almost certain Chelsea will get a quality striker in this summer. Torres, Villa, Pato, Aguero. They can almost take their pick.

They should go for Villa. Pato and Agüero are still very young and Chelsea aren't exactly famous for developing young players. Villa is old and nobody knows how he'll cope with Premier League football. Torres is a brillant player, he's Premier League proven and he's still young. He should be the obvious pick.
 
Wonder what the odds on Torres going to Barca and Ibrahimavic going to city? Did him and Mancini get on when he was in charge?
 
Could be bullshit but I'd be very surprised if Chelsea and City didn't both have a go at signing him this summer given Liverpool's failure to make the CL.
 
Well Torres has commented that the rigours English football might be bad for his delicate body, so it would seem really bad to the Liverpool faithful should he move to another English club.

I think Barca or Real would be a better bet, but being the sensitive soul that he is, will probably try to avoid Real. If he ends up at Barca, it would be downright frightening.

What is this with players in their best and generally most prolific years are being called old? Why is 28 old? This isn't the 1950's. He's got 6-7 years in him. 5 of which can be top. And of course he'd cope in the Premier League. He scored way more than Torres in Spain, way more with Spain and is used to play alone at the top. He's pure class.
I rate him higher than Torres. Of the two I'd prefer Villa, despite his age.
 
I think they are more likely to go for Aguero. Of course I'm not basing this on any fact what so ever other than Aguero would be for sale.
 
So who all are Chelsea going for then - Aguero, Pato and Torres. fecking media bollocks.
 
Benitez stays. Torres stays. Plays for about 15-20 matches. Injured for the rest. Another shit season for Liverpool.
 
Cannot for the life of me see Torres staying unless no one can genuinely get the cash together to afford him.. apart from Citeh that is.

I don't think he's the type of player who goes where the money is...
 
So according to the tabloids today Chelsea are going after Fernando Torres, Pato, Thiago Silva and Pablo Hernandez whilst I've seen newspaper reports of Villa and Aguero recently.

Another day in paradise then.
 
Well, imo the biggest reason why Torres had left his boyhood club Atletico was to win trophies. I don't think money played any serious part in his consideration, he could easily make as much back at Madrid or anywhere else,if not more. Dippers keep insisting he won't leave the place where he's idolized, well he was worshiped back home where he grew up and became a hometown hero and he still moved on.

Having Spanish manager and a few Spanish players in the team must have been comforting too, but in the end winning things is what it was mostly about. Every top player has ambition to play for the best team, the one that ends up at the top of the pile,so to speak. Now, three years later Torres is yet to win his first trophy at Liverpool and the club went backwards both on and off the pitch.

The fact that he's surrounded by mediocrity and is expected to carry the attacking load for the whole team in the physically toughest league in Europe could be a factor,too.
 
City fan at work is convinced they're signing Torres. I can't see it to be honest. I'm happy he thinks this way though, the city fans are in for quite a dissapointing Summer if their setting their sights on players of that ilk imo.

Plus, with this new 25 player squad rule there are going to have to be about 10 departues from their squad before they can bring a couple in.
 
Dippers are now convinced that Martin Broughton has been conspiring to engineer a sale of Torres to Chelsea all along.

On the other hand, Pool owners wouldn't want to strip LFC of their most valuable asset when they are attempting to sell the club.
 
Tony Barrett at the Times seems pretty sure he'll end up at Chelsea. Given he's a Liverpool fan, is based on Merseyside, and speaks to Torres regularly he'd be well placed to gauge the way the wind is blowing.

Said that Torres being at Liverpool come September was about 3/10 and that Torres is so frsutrated at the lack of stability or investment that he would move to another English club.

Well, they'll need to raise transfer funds in order to attract a decent manager.

Anything from 60mil upwards would be more than welcome for the owners. The value of LFC isn't tied to individual players like Torres, but rather it's the huge support they have in England and around the world.

What for?

He left Athletico to go and win silverware. Can you imagine how he must be feeling now, at the age of 26, yet to win a sinlge piece of silverware at club level and having the Europa fecking League to look forward to next season in his Anfield shit hole. Shit squad of players around him, manager and fellow countryman who brought him there has left, no new stadium, very slim chance of winning anything worthwhile next season... I think he'd jump at the chance to move to a club like Chelsea.
