Frank Lampard to Chelsea: Really?

So Sky Sports is reporting that Frank Lampard, Chelsea's all time top goal scorer, club legend and current Derby County manger, could be approached to take over at the Bridge in the event that Mauricio Sarri departs for Juventus.

You've got to love the romance of it; but what about the wisdom?

Lampard has absolutely zero elite club management experience. Yes with his Premier League, FA Cup, Champion's League and other honours, he will undoubtedly be respected in the dressing room, but will he have the tactical smarts to take on Pep, Klopp and Pochettino on the field? Add to that the fact that he will be without Eden Hazard and possibly operating under a transfer ban, is he destined to fail?

Strange as it may sound, coming from a United fan, but is it wise for an elite club to offer a management position to someone who is totally untried and untested at that level or doesn't it matter?

Thoughts please?
 
Yeah, you'd have to be stupid to employ and ex-player at a big club.
 
Why on earth would any big English club want to hire a former player?
 
Chelsea treat managers like a cheap hooker anyway, use abuse and forget. He would be better off staying out of that for his own career albeit the compo package will buy a nice house or 5.
 
Every club wants their own Guardiola/Zidane, and the slightest hint of them doing well with another club, no matter what the level, is enough to make them buy into the dream.

Careful....

Pep had Messi and Zidane had Ronaldo, who does Lampard have? I am not sure that there is anything like a comparison between those two managers and Lampard.
 
Chelsea are desperate to win "who will make the stupidest decision?" competition against us.

Clubs do that with players too when it suits them. I don't understand, is the managers job something special in football?
 
I think he has a shot at doing well. He is a smart guy and while it is no indicator of success I believe his IQ was tested at >150 while he was at Chelsea. Surely can’t hurt.

One has to start somewhere.

And let's stop acting like there is an established blueprint to being a successful manager. You don't always have to work your way up from League 2, against improbable odds, to be qualified for top jobs.
 
He's one of my favourite players of all times but that would be an absolutely terrible decision. Derby massively overachieved and were nowhere near the top 6 in the Championship. And the way their players behaved on the pitch at times doesn't reflect well on Lampard
 
For his own good he should stay away for now and manage Derby one more season. 2 or 3 back to back defeats and roman would eat him alive.
 
Thought he did well at Derby and gave us a lesson when they beat us. He might be one of the better top players to make it in management.

For our sake I hope it doesn't go well but well enough to not sack him straight away and get some top coach in.
 
Think it is more that if they have this ban and have to use their gazillion loan players Jody Morris knows them.
 
it looks a reasonable decision to me

transfer ban & rookie hero Manager - sorts expectations in 2 ways, innit?

Roman sacked Di Matteo to lure Pep out of his sabbatical and Pep snubbed Chelsea for Bayern. Pep knows that Chelsea is a revolving door for managers' absolutely no time given to managers to prove themselves. Klopp won't leave Liverpool to go to Chelsea. He is building something there and has commented on the fact that FSG has never put him under pressure. Why, oh why would he ever go to Chelsea then?

It has yo be Max Allegri, that's if he wants to go.

Did you read the post you quoted? I said it was pointless to say we should go for them. Same with Allegri, he's also not interested.

Is there much to be gained by managing Derby for another couple of seasons? He'll just be good at managing a team like Derby, it won't really help him manage a team like Chelsea.
 
Bring it on, losing their best player, getting a unproven manager, and hopefully an upheld transfer ban all at once, it surely won't end well.

Arsenal horrible, Chelsea likely the same, us probably worse, the top 4 is potentially open to a new comer next season imo.
 
He's quite intelligent. Will need a bit of time but I reckon he might not be a bad choice....

We can hardly say anything when we've hired Ole.
 
They know tough times are looming with a transfer ban and no superstar like Hazard and they want a friendly face the fans will never hate.

It buys the club more time and keeps discontentment from fans to a minimum.

It happens in North American sports all the time and you could argue it's happening at United right now.

Or they believe he really is a top manager and have done their homework.
