It's pretty straightforward, and here is a personal example to illustrate: on Saturday night, I went on a date with a lovely woman, and after finishing our drinks, we went for a walk outside. During said walk, we turned to face each other and kissed for about 10 seconds (all very lovely and romantic!) If that happened to be a man I was kissing, then there would be a good chance of getting heckled by some random passerby (or in some countries, something much more sinister.) That says it all really, and I think by coming out, people are not shoving anything down anyone's throats; rather they are looking for the freedom to live in a similarly open manner, without the fear of harassment and/or violence. I don't know why that is so hard for anyone to understand.
