George Floyd | Chauvin guilty on all counts | Sentenced to 22.5 years

This particular thread is going to have a lot of people watching, mods included, so try not to be daft whatever the verdict.

That's no excuse not to eat ice cream.

Also, how much snow did you get? Apparently it's coming our way :(

Just a dusting thankfully.

We usually make our own ice cream and there is just something about making ice cream when its freezing outside that doesn't feel right.

Do they have an exact time for when the verdict is passed and is there a livestream somewhere?

We're talking about bourbon and ice cream, lets keep that energy going when the verdict comes out.

I believe the earliest they're expecting a verdict is in about 20 min. I'm using this stream:

Chauvin has been called back into the court room.

I know I’m watching this so contributing to it all but the bottom bar on CNN right now with “The George Floyd Killing | Verdict Is In” has a really weird reality tv or tv drama type vibe to it.

100%. “Tonight at 7, season premiere” vibe

I am debating whether to contribute to the media madness or just follow on twitter. May see if I can get the WaPo live stream link working.

Regardless of outcome, is it true that maximal sentence for Chauvin without any prior would be around 12 years? And with the prospect of appeal etc that this might not be over for a while even if done for second degree murder?

Whatever he gets there is zero chance he does a full term.

Unlikely, given that one of the murder counts alone gets 40 years.

It's kinda murky because of this:

Each count carries a different maximum sentence: 40 years for second-degree unintentional murder, 25 years for third-degree murder, and 10 years for second-degree manslaughter.

But under Minnesota sentencing guidelines, for a person with no criminal history, each murder charge carries a presumptive sentence of 12 1/2 years in prison, while manslaughter has a presumptive sentence of four years.

and because the prosecution asked for an exception to these guidelines. (they wanted the presumptive sentenced guidelines ignored I think)

Two great points by Jason Johnson...

1. Perversely, an acquittal would move the change forward more quickly, & ultimately more effectively, than a guilty verdict(s).

2. Imagine if Trump were still president?

He apparently bailed a few of his students out of jail over the past year.

@Carolina Red, you’d do such if you were a college prof?

Just watch it on CSPAN or PBS. Best to just cut out the sensationalist crap that the other media orgs look to offer.

So Van Jones just showed up on CNN, made my decision to find another stream easier.

Is it possible for him to be found guilty of multiple charges eg. third degree murder and manslaughter or do they need to settle on one?
