One of if not the greatest pure goalscorers of all time.

582 goals in 669 games. Utterly ridiculous.

RIP to one of the greatest strikers ever. I was certain his stats for Bayern would never be matched until Messi and Ronaldo proved me wrong. His goalscoring ratio was laughably good for well over a decade.

I am glad his and his family’s suffering finally stopped and I hope it was a peaceful ending. What a horrible disease it is.

He was so much more than a poacher but it is understandable that he often gets reduced to his scoring record since it is so stupidly good. What a player (and not only striker) he was!

Beckenbauer on Gerd Müller:

“I’m often asked about Gerd Müller’s importance for FC Bayern and German football,” Beckenbauer said. “And my answer is that football is very much about goals. You can play well, but without goals you won’t win. Gerd Müller was quite simply the greatest guarantee of goals in the history of football.” According to one of the greatest players ever, it was Müller’s goals that “launched Bayern into the international sphere in which is finds itself today. Gerd is the origin. In my eyes, he’s the most important player in the history of FC Bayern. Sometimes you get classifications like ‘most valuable player’. He was that. Gerd was the MVP. In that respect, he was also the most important.”

RIP

RIP Der Bomber. He was some player. My abiding memory of him is his goal against England in Leon in 1970. We had a black and white TV set up in the science lab at school just to watch the match. Muller's goal turned out to be the winner. So many players from my youth have now gone.

Klose his national team record. But he needed almost twice as many games for that.

RIP
