Sometimes Ribery can gouge his opponents eye, with the 4th official right behind him, sometimes Boateng can block a certain goal by extending his elbow. I have seen this situation being waved through when hand ball rules were much stricter. So I'm not sure that I can say that the Hummels situation was a clear mistake on a VARable level.
