Prefacing this by saying I agree with what Utd have done with both Greenwood & Antony, regardless of how round the houses we went for the former.

I learned yesterday that Nottingham Forest are still playing their new signing Gonzalo Montiel whilst he's being accused of and investigated for rape back in Argentina. I think apart from The Athletic and Forest reporters, nobody has even mentioned this. Surely Forest can't keep playing him? There's basically zero pressure on them though due to smaller clubs getting away with way more because it gets less clicks. You don't even need to imagine how widespread this would be if it was a Utd player because it's literally already happened. I bet this one however is brand new news to most reading this.

EDIT: I'll also add, Forest signed him whilst knowing he was already accused of this.

United is blockbuster. I think one of the dailymail editors/journos had a quote about you never going broke/starving if you fill your platform with United stories. I mean, even for our supposed sale everyone had opinions as to how symbolic and shambolic it would be for this institution to end up with Qatar owners etc. The lights are bright when it comes to United. I mean even that other guy is still selected for Arsenal with little to no hassle/pushback/questioning.

Yeah I initially felt silly about saying it's just about Utd but it really is. Considering the size and history of Arsenal the lack of real reaction to that player has been pathetic.

United didn’t go ‘round the houses’ in this respect regarding Greenwood - he was suspended immediately. The press went round the houses.

Need to dig up something on Salah and Haaland before the respective games Vs Liverpool and City, if this gets players unavailable from the moment an allegation is made.

Sounds like there is an ongoing criminal investigation here. I’m very uncomfortable talking about this with the lawyers circling.

They were going to bring him back until external pressure changed their minds. That's pretty widely accepted. Anyway let's not derail.

I mean with respect to the fact that Forest are still playing their player. We stopped playing ours is all I mean.

And if discussion about Greenwood is to be considered ‘derailing’ this thread I am rather pessimistic for you on this one sir!

Yep, I think it was Martin Samuel if I’m not mistaken.

Has he been charged with anything or is it just an investigation at the moment?

I can’t remember the whole timeline around the time when Jonny Evans was accused at rape at a Christmas party. Did United take him out of the team while it was investigated?

The decision re Antony seems to be the big outlier here, rather than United being treated differently to any other club.

He wasn't really in the first team at the time, more on the fringes. We sent him back on loan to Sunderland the second half of that season (unclear as to whether that was always the plan or we did that to get him away from the limelight), and while he was there the accusation was dropped.

This is why these decisions should not be down to the clubs. The Premier League should have policies in place so there is clear guidance and rules about what happens in these circumstances.

Jonathan Northcroft wrote a decent article about this last week, looking at how these things are dealt with in the big American sports and how much better they are with these issues.

So what do you do if there's a CL final, and a week before the final an allegation all of a sudden appears against your best player.

Do you drop them?

Did some looking on Google, this seems to be the just of it:
  • It happened in January 2019 in argentina, the girl couldn't remember details at first (normal) but after therapy was able to remember Montiel being there on top of her (and 2 other guys?).
  • Montiel denies it and says he was driving a sick friend home and when he returned, the girl was screaming and saying it was all his fault for not looking after her.
  • Montiel says she was with a friend of his and named him
  • Mundo Deportivo reported earlier this year that he was charged with sexual abuse, though that was all I saw and it could be a mid translation somewhere where he "was going to be charged" or "could be charged" and mid reported and was actually charged. Not sure.
  • Forest says "their spoke to parties and did their due diligence and are happy with their findings"
  • Prosecutors office says Forest never contacted them and the case is ongoing.

Aye, increasingly think this is the correct course. Along with rules requiring clubs to inform the PL when allegations like this emerge.

It is just common sense isn't it...If you are under criminal investigation you shouldn't be allowed to play on a football pitch.

As a United fan the double standards on all these matters is just crazy. Two wrongs don't make a right, but it feels like not only are United the only club suspending their players, they are also getting heavily criticised for doing it.

You had Tony playing for almost a full season whilst being investigated for 250+ betting violations.

You have famous Arsenal fans on TalkSport saying Greenwood should never play in England again, whilst cheering on his own team's player accused of rape and claiming he's better than Casemiro in the process.

Bonkers no one is calling out the press/journalist on the double standards.

Don't think this one compares to our own cases really. It's an old case where he wasn't charged just called into enquiry and they've seemingly already made the decision that there isn't enough evidence to proceed.

I expect Anthony will be back for the same reason. Once the investigation is done and charges dropped life carries on. Different in the Greenwood situation of course as people had a chance to see the evidence themselves so could make a moral rather than criminal judgement.

Seems like a lot of details here. Tough to say really. I think it's hard to suspend a player on the back of this... things need to be taken on a case by case basis though. This there's the doubt of who it actually was, with Antony, there's no doubt that he was involved somehow, but it's a he said vs she said story... but one that went very public after he went to the media. And the case of previous allegations which are very important to the picture. With Greenwood, obviously the audio to remove all doubt. With that Arsenal guy, again, hard to suspend on the back of what's out there.

It's a tough situation to deal with and it should be dealt with by the league IMO as they are impartial, but I would say that on the balance of what evidence is out there, its probably right that the Arsenal guy and Montiel are going on as normal while our 2 RWs aren't currently playing...
