Lot's of talk over this guy and being linked with Porto at the moment. CM and 22 years old and touted as a great prospect. Got to one of the best players in the Championship at the moment.

Sounds like the type of guy we'll want to spunk £60m on in 2 years time in that case.

I read last summer (can’t remember where) his name being mentioned as one to watch. You’d hope we’ve scouted players like that this season.

Boro apparently turned down £10m from Porto in Jan, but doesn’t look like he’d cost the earth either.

Someone will take a punt on him this summer you’d have thought.

I really know nothing about the player but the fact that he's playing in the second tier is doing a lot of work in these statistical comparisons.

Also going to be 23 later this month, not exactly an old man but also not on the same developmental trajectory as a player like Wharton who was really really good in the Championship at 19 and moved to Palace just before his 20th birthday.

Morgan Rogers moved to Villa when he was 21. He's been of the best players in the Championship in an average Boro team. I expect him to move this summer.

Let’s sign him for the love of alliteration!

“Hayden Hackney hammers home heroic header.”

Championship is a fantastic league, a lot of talent and should not be looked down on, we should 100% be poaching prospects from those teams,

Gyokeres got him from Coventry for 15m quid , Dortmund with Bellingham for 25m and im sure there is a lot more examples

I'm not knocking Hackney at all and really don't have the basis for judging him. Maybe he'll turn into a great CM for a PL team. But in terms of upside Wharton looking great in the Championship at 19 does suggest a higher ceiling than a player doing the business at 22.

Yep we need to be looking there more I feel. A lot of the foreign clubs have clearly cottoned on and are looking to sign the talent themselves.

The main thing that is being missed here is that he played the most mins of Boro players. 43 matches playing 90 mins+ injury time in each

So that allows him to have the "most" in plenty of categories. There are plenty of players in the league who played more mins, so its not the only reason. But its one of the reasons, playing 3796 mins in the championship

When you look at it per 90 mins on a level playing field with other players who played less he averages

2.2 tackles - a bit low for a CM. Around 2.5 would be expected from someone who does a mix of defensive work and attacking work
0.7 interceptions - quite a normal amount

per 90 mins he has the 10th most passes of players in the championship of players to play at least 9 games

The comparison with Ederson, I dont see anything saying its per 90 mins. So if its comparing total amount of these categories when Hackney played 3837 mins against championship players and I guess cup competitions (as its more mins than the above whoscored figure for the championship), while Ederson played 2754 against players in Serie A then its not a good comparison at all. You can do a lot more stuff in an extra 1083 mins, or 12 games of full 90 mins...

I’m sorry but he has the name of a dead cert star. For that reason alone we should be all over this.

Please say his middle name is Harry

Then he’s known as HHH

It’s all about the game and how he plays it

Some tenuous links to Spurs. Looks like a Carrick / Alonso regen. Especially when he pings the ball forward, the resemblance is uncanny.

I would like us to see take some more punts from the Championship. I think Dan James is the only one I remember us signing for the first team and we basically doubled our money on him when it turned out he wasn’t good enough for us.

More and more players have transitioned very well from the Championship to Premier League in the last decade.

I’ve been saying this forever, but signing the best young players from Championship would be a much better transfer strategy than whatever we’ve been doing for the last decade.

Wharton, Watkins, Rogers, Bowen, Bellingham, Gyökeres, Mbeumo etc. all played in Championship few years ago. We even managed to sell Dan James with a profit.

His name sounds like a fake alias a Twitch streamer would use.

What up guys. It’s ye boi Hayden Hackney and today we’re gonna check out the latest gamechanging COD Zombie DLC that literally just dropped an hour ago!

If we take a chance on a Championship midfielder, it should be Shea Charles.

There are loads of great talents in the Championship and League 1, it is stupid that we give clubs a free go at them only to then realise within 6 months that we should have taken the punt ourselves.

Wharton being the most famous recent example but Hackney, Charles, Rudoni, Ronnie Edwards are all examples of players who are going to have good careers at the top end of the game. who are/were very gettable at one point.

Agree. No idea why we neglect it so much. United drive you mad when it comes to transfers.

Only seen the Youtube vids of Hackney but you can just see the talent is there. You can't really go wrong if it's a £20 million fee or whatever.

Which is strange because our DOF spent ages in the youth scene in England and got his first DOF gig in the Championship, he should be aware of these players and making it a point to bring one or two every window.

Agreed, the benefit of effectively filling a first team spot for under £30m can't be understated. It's a low risk endeavour, I just wonder why we never do it and the one time we did we made a nice little profit from it.

How the hell is there no part of London beginning with a J? Nearest I can find is "J Wood", slang for St. John's Wood. Jimmy Jaywood? Maybe we just call him Jay-Jay Wood.

Maybe he’s looked at the academy and thought we’ve got our own 18/19/20 year old prospects and we don’t need to pay other clubs for theirs.
