Saf did try to sign the fascist, along with Southgate, in the winter of 01-02 but United were against the shorttermism of the deal, taking into account this was Saf last season. So the club opted to sign the much younger, though more expensive option, Diego Forlan.
Would've been interesting to see if we could've closed the gap on Arsenal and progressed in the CL with Di Canio and Southgate, though personally Arsenal were on another level that year.
I have a vague memory of United being linked to him (as they were with many players) but didn't realise a lot of that. Thanks. Didn't know about Southgate at all, although it's another which doesn't surprise me because he seems the type of defender Fergie would have liked. Especially around the time after Stam left and they struggled to replace him

United were looking at a whole host of defenders in the winter period (Ayala, Samuel, Rio, Nesta) but they needed to shorten the list and move for one's who were more affordable. Southgate was on the market for 6/7 million at the time I believe and SAF rated him as a decent player.
But having spent big in the summer window, and this being SAF last campaign, United tightened their purse.

Was this when we were looking for a LB when Irwin left? Southgate would've been amazing for us.

Sometimes wonder what kind of force United could’ve been if the board just let Sir Alex spend, not even silly money, just something on a par with the others. Aren’t we 6th for net spend in the PL during the 90s? I Imagine we’re able to get R9 or Batistuta over the line.

Hulk at Chelsea.

He was constantly linked with us at the beginning of the 2010s but for some reason it just never happened. In 2012 it was even reported a deal had been struck between Chelsea & Porto but then out of nowhere he ended up going to Zenit instead.

Seems a bit of a waste for a player as good as he was to have never played in the top5 leagues.

I had to double-check check this one was actually true. This would-be football Mandela Effect is probably caused by Danny Mills having the same initials and also being bald.

I'm cheating here.

But I keep thinking Diego Simeone must have been the Inter Milan manager at some point. He seems a natural fit and he played for them too.

@Paolo Di Canio also always seemed like a Manchester United player. The sort Fergie liked to sign. Maybe it would have happened if he'd joined West Ham a couple of years earlier.
if i remember correctly, the deal for DiCanio failed because Yorke wouldnt leave. i think blackburn was set up for him and he knocked it back only to move there a few months later.

Harry Kane @ United under Fergie, I'm certain it would have happened had Fergie gone on longer.

Any failed French/Dutch/African talent - typically a winger - who hasn’t yet had a stint at one of Galatasary or Fenerbache. Someone like Nicolas Pepe seems like he should’ve already had a go there.

EDIT: He’s at Trabzonspor. Maybe I already knew that and that’s why my mind went there

Can't believe Ibrahim Afellay has played for Stoke but never played in Turkey

According to Di Canio it failed because he ultimately couldn't leave West Ham
