It doesn't look like our own players believe we're in a title race, does it?

Stage fright, or a distinct lack of belief? Perhaps a coincidental 2-game bad patch, or something more?

We aren't. No one should have believed that for a minute, it's just setting yourself up for disappointment.

As for the team, we're clearly a 'confidence team' under Ole, as seen by the very obvious pattern of alternating brilliant runs and awful slumps.

You have to believe, surely? We mightn't be quite there yet, but we shouldn't play like that's de facto the case. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy if that attitude permeates the team before the game's even up.

4 semi-final losses in a year and the most humiliating CL bottle job ever tells you all you need to know about this team's mentality.

We can come back against West Ham and Southampton but if there is a sniff of genuine glory, they piss their pants.

Been that way since we lost our aura when Fergie retired. Nearly bottled the FA cup final too under LVG. The only final we didn't look nervy was the one vs Ajax, and that was because we completely bullied them off the park.

We lack leaders, and probably why we spunked 80m on Maguire hoping he was the answer.

Not sure; all I'm thinking is surely the collective belief should be higher than it has been. The result is one thing, but the way we're playing, you wouldn't think this is a side that's within a few points of the league leaders.

Perhaps it's more concerning because City are now starting to play like a side that wants to go places.

If we don't make it in the end, I'd love for us to go down kicking and screaming, at least.

As a team we're better at chasing. Not sure if it's the dressing room or management, but it seems when we have something to play for we collapse under the pressure of it all. The semi-finals, our chase for the top for the last 2 seasons all examples of that.

Manchester City were complete garbage today and only won because Sheffield United were worse garbage. They are every bit as vulnerable as us

This teams mentality is the biggest thing holding us back at the moment. We shit the bed when it really matters far to often to be truly challenging for trophies.

Id say that comes from the manager
Yeah because Ole has never won a PL title so he wouldn’t know how to articulate what’s required... oh wait.

The squad lacks character massively, I mean who could you honestly say is absolute captain material and leads the team?

Our next signings need to have a bit about them mentality wise imo. These meek players don’t demand enough from each other on the pitch.

There'd be a very different feel about this place if we'd taken just 1 of our chances tonight.

Our strikers being heavily out of form is the main issue with us right now. Watch our fortunes change when that is no longer the case.

Seems like we were playing well until any mention of us being in the title conversation happened. We climbed to the top and then shit it.

Same happens with cups. We look good for a few rounds, get to a semi and crumble. We beat two strong teams in the CL, looked certain to go through, then failed to pick up the 1 point from 6 needed to qualify.

The mentality of the side is so fragile. We're pretty good until there's one iota of pressure.

Problem is that Ole won a lot as a player and as a manager has taken a team to win their first ever league title. He’s been a proven winner in his career.

I’d be more inclined to suggest that Bruno and Maguire being our two sort of de facto leaders is more indicative of where we are. They’ve won very little, but try to talk a big game.

It's kind of sad. And funny. But mostly sad.

In a league that holds the same standard as League One, yes. Ole will never win anything of note as a manager. That said, PL, CL or something like that.

The forwards look that petrified of missing it makes them miss.

There are just too many holes in this starting 11 to challenge for the title.

Poor center back pairing, no quality CDM, no right winger....

it's why Oli always starts Fred and McTominay against top six clubs, and why Rashford and Pogba keep getting shuffled out of their natural positions.

We’ve become a top four trophy club.

A club going for the league title would have pushed for the win, even it meant risking a loss.

But from a top four trophy perspective, this was a good performance and a good result.

I don’t think we can deny this any longer.

Yes, but it speaks to a point some of us have made lately amidst our run of good form lately - is it sustainable? We haven't been dominating games, we have been eeking out results and relying on individual quality. That would have been the case whether we had scored tonight or not.

Well, I guess the players have to believe they can win every game. But it's been obvious all season that we're not going to win the league. The fans shouldn't talk about title race and such, it just adds unnecessary pressure. We're not in a title race.

More bottling.

We bottled the first top four push. We bottled every semi final. Time will tell what else we'll bottle before the end of the season.

This is descending into a bottle job of the highest order, which is sadly becoming the hallmark of this side. There was an opportunity to make a run for the title and instead of having a good go at it, we've played like we're afraid of being in the position we were in. Professional footballers who want to be judged on their titles shouldn't respond like that.

The defence shouldn't take too much of the flak, it's the strikers who are letting us down. Their numbers and glaring misses are there for all to see.

This is not the best ever incarnation of Manchester United, but I don't think I've seen a United side with such a lack of nerve. Some players have stood up, but far too many have simply not performed. You get the impression a few of our players don't want to be involved in big games.

This team is crying out for a "Boss" either on the field or in the managers seat. Someone with the self belief, the arrogance actually to succeed.
Just look at SAF's record in semi~finals and you'll get the idea.

We aren't. Not good enough to be. City have a game in hand and already 4 points ahead. Most likely will be 7 ahead.

SAF would have given a hair dryer session to at least 4 of them.

Reality is we were deluding ourselves if we ever thought we could win the league anyway. We are still some distance from doing so, even when we sat top at the half way point we were only on 40 points, there's no way 80 points will be enough to win the title though, and even then 40 points flattered us given the level of performances. So many games were turned around after being shit on a stick for 45 minutes+, sooner or later that will catch up with you, there won't keep being a bit of individual brilliance to save the day.

We still need to go to Chelsea, Wolves, Spurs and City while we also have Liverpool at home.

The second half of this campaign is going to be a real test of the squads character.

Such a weird season.

In the space of a week, we've gone from beating Liverpool/Ole besting Klopp for the first time, to seemingly inheriting all Liverpool's issues whilst they smash Spurs away and seem set to re-enter the title race, whilst we look like fading into the chasing pack.

A week.

Here's hoping things change again soon.
