What an oddly timed thread.

As I never saw Best play too me he was a man with exceptional talent that pissed his opportunity up the wall. His early death was a real shame but after getting a new liver he really should have cleaned up his act.

My dad adored him though.

Now I don't want to sound rude, but why the feck do this thread up when its neither his birthday nor his death-day? Seems a bit random.

Fantastic player that was blighted by poor career choices. It seems if he had pulled his head from his arse he could have learnt alot from Law and Charlton in terms of keeping it together. Instead, alcohol and money destroyed him.

I've always wondered what might have happened if he'd been coming through today with Sir Alex. I still find it amazing that he managed to keep Ronaldo grounded.

I agree, but I think keeping Sir Ryan grounded is more of an accomplishment.
Amazing men. Both Best and Fergie. Like you say though, would have loved to have seen both men in their prime together.

.

Does it really matter? Surely we can take the time to fondly remember arguably United's greatest ever player. I never had the chance to see him but my old man worshipped him.

I don't know about Giggseh. Sure there was hype, but his persona never really seemed to indicate that he was an out and out party man. Likes a good time, but nothing too outrageous. Ronaldo on the other hand had leaches, looks, and a latino background. You look at the best players of the last two decades, and its really the Latino's (+ Gazza) that piss there careers up the wall with partying and drugs while the likes of Zidane, Giggs and Matthäus kept within themselves.

For me I think Giggsy was the prototype, Beckham was the recall, Ronaldo was the finished product.

I know, just seems a bit weird thats all.

Even my folks from but feck rural Australia knew about him. On the contrary you ask them who Ronaldo or Messi are and they say who?

Obertans #1 fan.
My Grandad absolutely hated Man United. He couldn't fecking stand them. He hadn't have watched a game with them for about 20 years, unless he was with me and my Dad (or so he said) and fecking constantly give all the shit about how United were scum to me. Fair enough, I give him some shit back.

Now this guy worshipped Stoke. He absolutely loved Stoke, and he would always tell me about Stanley Mathews. Best player the worlds ever produced he'd tell me, and he'd constantly tell me Giggs, Rooney hell even Ronaldo wasn't in Sir Stans league.

But George Best was different. The only player he said who he'd ever seen who could live with Stan. Told me about how talented he was and some of the stuff he could do. My old man loved George Best, was gutted when he died.

Wish I could have seen him.

I like the tale about the hotel porter (in Paris I think) who enters Georges room with some room service. Upon entering he sees Best drinking a bottle of top champers on the bed surrounded by a shit load of money that had been won in the casino downstairs. At this point the latest Miss World that he is dating walks out of the bathroom in her lingerie. The porter looks at Best and says "George.. where did it all go wrong?"

my familys from northampton and my grandad went to the infamous cup tie when Best scored 6, he said it was like watching a grown man playing a bunch of toddlers

too young to have seen him myself obviously but the moment that always sticks in my head is that shot of him stood with the ball at his feet waving the defender to come at him, just so he could skin him

unbelievable player, unbelievable legend

In a word no. Ronaldo is a great player Best was unique
I think his point was that in 40 years those 10 year olds who saw him play and worship him will be 50 and will pass on their stories of seeing Ronaldo play.

I was lucky enough to get to go to Old trafford to see George Best play. I wish the younger generation were able to have seen him play in the flesh, he was amazing.
Many people forget he had an 11 year career at Utd and his drinking problems sadly over shadow just how talented he was. He was Utds top goal scorer for 5 or 6 seasons in a row.
He played on shite pitches with heavy boots and footballs that are utter rubbish compared to today. Defenders were allowed to tackle from behind and he got hacked down in every game. He didnt roll around pulling hollywoods, often rode tackles that would have had todays stars demanding an ambulance and also was able to play with a cheeky impudence.
On top of that he was an icon of the 60's in a manner which none of todays stars are. he was nicknamed the 5th Beatle.
He had a great sense of humour and didnt suffer from petulance. He had an ego but it was one with a huge amount of humour attached.
Im sure fergie would have loved him, you couldnt help but love him, he was always smiling.

I only wish Sky was around back in the day. Imagine being able to watch George Best in every game he ever played in HD.

That's the problem with players from yesteryear, those of us below a certain age have only tidbits of grainy black & white coverage and memories of the older guys in the pub to go by. :(

I played my part in that victory  - back in my Cliff training ground spectating days. Best had been suspended for a month and he'd been training on his own for part of that week (forget what you've been told about him not caring about training - I used to watch him practice corners and shooting etc, he took it more seriously than most of his teammates did).

I told him how glad I was that he was back and that I'd missed watching him play. "I'm glad I'm back playing - I've missed it as well." Not exactly the most profound conversation, or even the longest talk I had with him, but memorable if only because it was the first time I'd managed to string a couple of sentences together and for what happened against Northampton.

Glorious player to watch - skillful, creative and (a much underrated quality) a good laugh at times as well.

the quotes from Best in this thread are brilliant, not only was he a great player but he was cool a feck too - James bond would kill for lines like those (he's licensed for it)

Every man wanted to be him, every woman wanted to be with him - is so apt

he's like the ultimate male fantasy come to life, his demise was such a tragedy.
