Casemiro will be here until the end of his contract then he will likely retire or go back to Brazil.
So I wasn’t being overly negative about Casemiro turning shit in a year or us as a team the next few years and my choice of captain had absolutely nothing to do with yesterday. Just to be clear as you skipped that bit.

I can’t imagine changing captain every five minutes is going to instil consistency. Stick with Bruno. He isn’t perfect (is anyone?) but his passion was largely being lauded before yesterday.

The three outside of Bruno & Maguire is pretty obvious — Casemiro, Varane and Martinez. Varane is more of a calming influence (although he has some fire in him — watch him trying to make our players acknowledge the fans at Anfield straight after the game instead of immediately sneaking into the dressing room) while Casemiro and especially Martinez are extremely vocal and aggressive — it really depends on what type of captain do you prefer to have.

De Gea sometimes appears in these discussions due to the length of his stay but let's be honest, if he had any leadership qualities, he would've
  • been made a captain already
  • been able to organize his defense — if you can't deal with 4-5 players, how are you supposed to deal with the entire squad?
But let's be honest — Bruno will be a captain or one of vice-captains at worst, despite the understandable criticism. He's very vocal, his work-rate and attitude is spot on 95% of the time (him switching off against Liverpool really isn't something that he does regularly), he's always there and he's very popular in the squad.
De Gea has been made captain before under OGS. Then we played absolutely crap and lost (forgot the game) and he came out and called it out.

The Norwegian bottlejob then put his pet in place and we continue to fail for three years.

But still, I agree I would not take him about the others on your list.

Thanks for explaining what you meant initially

I don't see him taking it away from Bruno tbh. He's the de facto captain and it'd be a big deal to remove the armband from him next season.

Especially when he didn't formally take it away from Maguire this season. I can't see it happening.

Casemiro still doesn't speak English btw so it's not going to be him anyway.

You just jumped the gun and made stuff up that I never even implied, it didn’t need explaining. but never mind, I usually have you as one of the level headed posters

I didn’t make it up, it was how I interpreted what you said as it didn’t make sense to me. You’ve explained now and agreed the time limit captaincy thing didn’t make any sense.

Nothing to do with bottlejob. It was the right call. DdG can’t even take care of his own area, let alone of anything else. And there were hardly any other options at that time either.

Oh, yeah, because Maguire was so much better. You and other people crying about De Gea but rating this Championship centre back display amazing hypocrisy.

Maguire as bad as he can be is still a better captain than DdG. Any other half decent player who has been with the club for more than a decade would be established captain, but DdG understandably is not.

Yeah, The Daily Mail is known for its impeccable journalistic standards.
Decent journos who have had plenty exclusives in the past including this club and others. If you want to deny that then that’s up to you.

Think it's totally unfair people are turning on Bruno. The man is a much better captain than Maguire, I think we can all agree on that.
If we'd have won at Anfield nobody would be having this conversation.

One of the worse things about the loss is it’s given all these fecking papers ammo to start spreading bullshit and revelling in it again

No chance for a change. No point as well.

Maguire is captain even when he’s a big burden and not playing.

Captain is overrated.

I'd give it to Rashford. Home grown, done admirable things, near enough ever-present and it gives him something extra to shoot for.

Doesn't really matter so long as there's leaders on the pitch. Sunday was an anomaly, this team is knackered and has never been made to work this hard before now.

Hell no, he already gets enough stick, doesn’t need to be made captain so fans can blame him even more.
Plus there are older and more experienced players than him in the squad.

I have to say, some of the reactions from the British media are fecking disgraceful.

These clowns were nowhere to be seen about Maguire last season and after one disaster (we had numerous ones last year and the one before) and all of a sudden they're onto Bruno.

I hope he actually shithouses even more until the end of the season and we win the remaining cups in the dirtiest way possible.

Ideally I would say Cas, but he feels a little too fiery for captain these days. Varane would have been my choice after him but we have to manage his minutes, so Lisandro it is

Exactly.
I just wrote in the Bruno thread that I don’t even remember our captains under SAF after Keane left. I am assuming it must be the senior players Giggs, Neville or Rio and later Vidic.
It is a shared responsibility among the senior players. That’s it.
Yes, exactly.

In my opinion, the role of the captain is meaningless today, he is just "decorative". He only interfaces with the referee, nothing else.

There have been two big changes since the early 1990s:
1. All footballers are expected to be model professionals. No drinking, smoking, etc.
2. The manager has many assistants and lots of help with technology and science (video specialists, statisticians, psychologists, nutritionists, etc.)

The need for the captain to do something to help the team and or help the manager is nonexistent today. Either during games, or outside the games.

That's why ETH will not change the first captain (Maguire) or the second captain (Bruno).

(It seems that some people here forgot that our captain is actually Maguire, not Bruno! )

Hard not to think part of the reason they go so hard on Bruno is he "replaced" a good ol English lad.

I'm going to assume that all those posters who've spent the last couple of years saying how disgraceful it is that Maguire was made captain a few months after joining aren't the same ones voting for Casemiro or Martinez here.

It would still be Bruno unless we buy some fantastic captain material, like say Rice. Or maybe Kane although I personally don't like him as captain.

People saying Martinez is fluent in English is talking out of their behind.

Stupid for Casemiro to be the popular choice when he's not even in the running for me

Bare minimum for a Man Utd captain is a decent grasp of the English language and I'd never give captaincy to someone in their first year (already made this mistake with Maguire)

Luke Shaw should be on the list

I've said it before, and I will say it again. Some of you put way too much emphasis on who is captain. A leader will lead whether they are wearing the armband or not, and truth be told, none of you will ever be happy with who the captain is. I'm so glad theCaf doesn't run the club...

I'll stick with Bruno thanks, first captain to lift a trophy in 6 years...G.Nev comes out with some hysterical garbage and suddenly Bruno is the worst thing to happen to the club ever.
