Re your edit. I like that idea too. Only problem with that being the anomaly a side like Wigan was to win it again, as a team just totally bombing out would harm our coefficient (if it happened regularly enough)
If a CL spot was at stake, one of the big teams would put out a weakened lineup at any tie.

In order to make a playoff to become more fair, you would had to divide the league in 2 groups of 10 with seeding and then have a playoff. Otherwise would be unfair for those who finish 4th to up.

I actually like the idea. It would add a lot of excitement without upsetting the value of the league too much. The only downside I can think of is if a 7th place side wins and promptly bombs in the qualifying stage of the CL, it could have implications for league quota based on points.
