Is Eredivisie the real European Super League?

Once the weak 17/18 season rotates out, the picture is only going to get clearer. Why are we seeing such unprecedented levels of dominance? Is it just the money or can other leagues learn something more from the dominance of Dutch football?

Some context on the table in the OP wouldn’t go amiss

Its about the European Coefficient points. Eredivisie is top of the table in Europe this year and have been showing an upward trends in recent years overall.. (we will surpass Portugal at #6 probably when the horrible 17/18 season for NL will dissapear from the ranking.

Furthermore the title will be a tad exaggeration.

 We're not even half way through the season.

I do wonder how Netherlands can be ahead of England when Ajax is the only Dutch team in the Champions League, whereas England has 3 group winners and Chelsea in second place. If anything it shows Europa and Conference Leagues need their weightings reduced.

I'm guessing quite a few Eredivisie teams have entered the Conference League which has played a part in the figures?
It's true, Eredivisie have sent their heavy hitters Feyenoord, Arnheim and Alkmaar, while the PL couldn't come up with anyone better than Spurs, needless to say Spurs lost their direct duel against their Dutch opponents and face elimination now.

Wins over the different tournements amount to the same amount of points divided by the number of teams that are eligible to enter per fa.

Yeah, the weightings are nonsense. I don't know what it actually is currently but it should be CL 100%, EL 50% and Conference League 25% or something along those lines.

In 18/19 when Spurs got to the CL final they had the same coefficient as Arsenal who got to the EL final. Likewise Liverpool who won the CL had a lower coefficient than Chelsea who won the EL just because they won fewer games overall - which is partly because in the EL you play an extra two games.

Look, we can't go around cutting coefficients, just because the Dutch upper midtable is more competitive than the English.

I just want to point out that France are currently the rightful second, they have more points per team than the PL this season.

While the weights might not reflect the level of competition, this suggestion is an even bigger nonsense.

If the top countries get more slots in the higher weighted competitions, the small countries would never have a chance to catch up or an incentive to play their best teams in the EL and ECL (that's crap, for sure).

I think what needs to be done is a limit of 1 or 2 teams per competition per country and you count the best result. Probably two because Germany and France have one dominant force but not much consistency beyond that in recent years.

Looking at numbers it seems it’s less due to Dutch dominance and more other leagues falling off.

Ajax had a phenomenal group stage though.

Though the points that are gained when you win/draw a single match are the same in the different competitions, the points gained when you qualify/start in a certain round differ significantly.

Ajax beating Dortmund in the CL is the same number of points as Feyenoord beating Union Berlin in the Conference League.
However Ajax finishing 1st in their CL group and qualifying for the knockouts in the CL gains significantly more points than Feyenoord finishing 1st in their Conference League group and qualifying for those knock outs.

Another factor is that 3/5 Eredivisie teams started in July. Being lower on the coefficient list we need to to a lot more qualifiiers. PSV and Feyenoord played 6 matches before reaching the group stages, Vitesse 4 and AZ 2. You also gain points in those qualifiers. (though not as much as in the group stages)

It's because of Ajax, qualifiers, and the Europa Conference League.

There are always smaller leagues higher up in the coefficients early on in the competitions because of points from playing qualifiers. The Conference League is creating a curious distortion too. AZ were actually knocked out of the Europa League in qualifying but were parachuted into the Conference League where they are in a group with Randers, Jablonec and FC Cluj. After watching Mura in Spurs's group the level of some of these teams is abysmal, League One or Two level, so there are lots of easy points on offer in the ECL. Holland also have two other sides in the ECL. Ajax have been great though.

Is there an explainer for the dummies at the back, like me, as to what exactly this table is and how it works?

So Dutch teams have won more games, or accrued more points at least, than teams from any other country this season so far?
Or is it worked out by mathematical gymnastics depending on rankings going into tournaments etc?

It's a good year and we'll be back to our average soon. I don't see the problem.

It's only Spurs (that are taking the piss). All the Portugese, French and German teams the Dutch have gotten results against are doing their best.

I agree the smaller cups could do with less points gained/lost. Doesn't change the fact that Ajax are dominating and PSV is still in the Europa. Feyenoord and AZ are doing great in the conference league and even Vitesse is still in it.

This is simply the consequence of a third European tournament. This change was exactly the point: more wins for clubs that were not winning earlier. The level of the Europa league should be higher now so that means less wins for the clubs in that tournament. Failing in the Europa league will knock you down to the Conference league where you get to play catch up for points again.

From this link this season it's England first then France and Netherlands.
NL collected lots of points in qualifying rounds and managed to keep a good momentum. As a result they could overtake Portugal at the end of 22/23 and even challenge France soon.
