No matter what is the decision, they should communicate this as soon as possible. I imagine that there may be plenty of people planning to travel this evening so such people should have enough time to change their plans, cancel tickets etc.

That's just Northern Ireland, right? Can't imagine any fixtures getting cancelled in Ireland.
League of Ireland is 110% going ahead as normal tonight. Only game that may be postponed is Derry vs. Bohs which is in Derry.

EDIT: Bohs just confirmed the game is going ahead.

I totally get some people are going to be deeply upset with this as the queen to them is like a mother and they love the monarchy. If they want to mourn and constantly sing GSTK then fair enough - go ahead with it BUT not everyone sees the queen in the same way and would just want to get on with life rather than having to see the whole country stop. I just don’t know how everything has to come to a standstill though. On the day of the funeral yes I get it but 12 days is just like living in the medieval times. That’s just my opinion so don’t start crying over it. If you want to mourn then go ahead with it but don’t expect other people that deep down don’t give a flying feck about the monarchy to do the same.

I didn't speculate on a main motivation for it, nor did I claim that the games can't go ahead because it's unsafe. I said the games should go ahead, albeit behind closed doors as a compromise.

Fair enough. I only got half the information there.
Ok, fair enough. I was more addressing some other posters who seem to be trying to argue that the games couldn't possibly go ahead, for reasons of public safety.

a) That's not true b) That's not why the PL is under pressure to call them off

It’s controversial to claim the reason the games can’t go ahead is because that would be unsafe. When that’s obviously not the main motivation.
I think you are conflating a few things. Obviously cancellations this weekend wouldn't be down to policing pressures, but games in London on the day of the funeral is an entirely different matter.

Everything wont come to a standstill. Things will be 98% normal for most people outside of the actual funeral.

Telly might be a bit shit and some live entertainment events postponed, that's it. Let's mot pretend we're going onto a forced lockdown for 10 days.

I'm only talking about this weekend.

Although with the funeral, they have that bit longer to make plans re policing etc So games could probably go ahead then as well. If there was a desire to do so.

Do we know yet what day the state funeral will be on?
Monday 19th is the date being thrown around at the moment.

I also think theres just too much money in the game to just cancel these games now and play them elsewhere in an already crowded fixture list. It could end up being 2 games in a week plus one at the weekend too for a couple of weeks which has the potential to de-rail the season.

The events going on this weekend are unprecedented in terms of policing. They don't know what to expect, unlike a large event that happens regularly and within certain parameters like the Notting Hill Carnival. I don't agree that there isn't a public safety consideration re police numbers and crowd control.

Latest is that football can be played any day except her funeral. Which is sensible and fair enough

I’m sure with the option the football authorities will give it a go ahead because money matters

Postponing Celtic v Shakhtar would be mindboggling given the context of the latter club.
Hahah, right?
Shakhtar: We had to move countries, because ours is at war. Our region is invaded and our city occupied. We can still make this work.
Cetlic: Sorry, mate. An old lady passed in ANOTHER freaking country. We mourn...

Yes I agree.

I can respect a full day allocated next weekend for the funeral and mourning. I don't dislike the Queen.

This weekend should be as normal and at worst cancel next weekend but I think just one day is adequate next weekend. We're facing two weekends cancelled in an already hectic schedule towards the World Cup.

Well, technically, she did pass away in Scotland.

She passed away in Scotland.

That means cancel the SPL and the Prem can go ahead, right?

What matters is playing football matches unless there's a reason not to do so.

Logically the matches should only be under threat if the majority of the people attending didn't wish to do so out of respect for the Queen or would rather be at home watching the 24 hour news coverage.

I guarantee that if a straw poll of football fans was done that well in to the 90's% of fans would say to go ahead with matches because there simply isn't a strong enough connection between the Queen and football to call them off.

With the way the world is at the moment we shouldn't be looking to cancel more things, people need things to look forward to and enjoy, bringing the country to a standstill won't bring anyone back to life and in a week and a half all that will have been achieved will be more fixture backlog in an already crowded calendar.

I imagine that’s fairly standard and the government wouldn’t openly force them to do it.

I do think they’ll be pressure to cancel this weekend though and obviously on the day of the funeral.
I think they’ll do it out of a fear of massive negative PR

The response on here is nothing short of remarkable and has made for an entertaining read.
The Head of State has died, some empathy wouldn't go amiss at times like this.
i am not a royalist by any stretch but there needs to be some show of respect from the nation.

That said though i hate not having football on at the weekends. The world has moved on a long way since 1952, its too fast pace to close down for 10 days of mourning.
Play the games this weekend and then move all Saturday games to Sunday for next weekend (if the funeral is next saturday). 2 minute silences across the games both weekends.
