Is Jadon Sancho really worth the 100 plus million fee?

People said that last year and we wasted an entire window
Last summer we offered around a 100M if I remember correctly but they wanted 120M, do you think we should have spent 120M on him?

Dortmund are greedy and United have no warchest. 1+1=Small chances of signing him.

He would be perfect signing though and would allow us to stretch opponents every possible way.

This insisting on certain numbers is so silly. We don't know the accounts, the details, the budget.
If you want to sign a player, you have to pay what it takes to buy him. What else is there to say about it?

And if your club can afford it, why the hell not? What do you care? And if it can't, it's not an option.
As for the whole "worth it" back and forth, again, don't you feel it's silly for fans to claim 'player x is worth 100m, but NO WAY he's worth 120m'?

Where did I say that? I said we wasted the summer.

Which we did as we done next to nothing to improve our first 11 for the current season.

No use chasing a player not getting him and then wanting credit for that too.

Sure could pretend to go for a top player every year if that gets the owners credit.

The second Sancho wasn't being bought we should have spent that money elsewhere on someone who could help us this season

Its not my money but it affects the club’s budged to sign other players, not only on the current window but for future ones.

We as a club have been ripped before, hence way we are one of the biggest spenders in the world without actually having a worldclass squad, so I think the “its/its nor worth it” debate is interesting and valid.

I completely agree, we wasted a lot of time in it. We should had moved on as soon as a deal wasnt reached.

To us, sure.

To other teams where they aren't desperate for a RW, no.

Sancho on the right wing all this season, we'd be closer to City no doubt!

If we’d spent the Sancho or even VDB/Amad money on Partey and Jota we’d have won the league or come very close. Fine fine margins
Because buying Partey and Jota did wonders in improving the league position of the clubs buying them eh

Partey is worshipped on here and I still don't get it. Worked well enough in Atletico's no fun allowed football philosophy, and has been average to the point where you forget he exists for an albeit absolutely nothingy Arsenal team.

I know what you mean but they’ve both been injured. Both were available for around VDB money. Whose to say that they wouldn’t have stayed fit if they came here? Jota has been waiting for the step up for a while and he’s been really bright when he’s been fit. Perfect rotation all across the front 3 instead of running Rashford into the ground. I thought what Partey did against us was far more impressive than Rice Kante Fabiniho etc and then he got injured.

It’s not such a wild take. Both players were clearly available and ready to move but we signed Amad and VDB instead who haven’t helped us at all?

We all love United
I might be the only one on the forum who prefers Sancho to Erling this summer. Get Jadon in first and if possible, get Haaland in 2022. In any case, I don’t believe the latter will be going anywhere this window

It is of course valid but I think it's silly if we as fans get too hung up on the numbers, because we're not in an informed position to judge these.

If you've established that Sancho is your preferred target signing for the wings, how exactly does it make sense for fans to go "at 100m, he is a player we should sign, at 120m, no thank you"?
That the club has to draw lines and operate with the budget is another matter.

For many different reasons I'd prefer Sancho over Haaland this summer. Haaland is a final piece in the puzzle signing with his daft fees and how he plays.

I have no idea what the right amount is for Sancho, but if we do go in for Sancho that has to be based on the belief that Greenwood is ready to be our first choice 9. We know now we can’t rely on Martial and it’s all but certain we’re not spending 120m on either Haaland or Kane.

Nope! If they dont reduce his price to 80 million we should just go after raphinia who actually plays on the right for leeds. Also much cheaper.

If we dont buy raphinia he will just end up at madrid this summer.

It's a lot of hindsight though. I for one am very, very surprised at how the VDB thing has gone, I would have expected him to surely be of use to you.

Amad is a kid, only joined in January too, so it doesn't make much sense to regard him as a 'summer signing' meant to help the season's performance.

Raphinha (preferred personally) will be difficult to get because of Leeds and his current contract which expires in 2024.

Also, he will not be targeted by the media like Sancho should he have a spell of poor games.

I only include Amad because the money could have been used for now and he could have benefitted more from playing first team football on loan at Parma. A strange signing in hindsight unless we absolutely had to act but there was also no mention of any other clubs bidding. People in Italy were also quite surprised. Then we couldn’t get him in until January and he’s not played a minute in the league since. I see VDB as our Pogba replacement. I can’t argue with the efficiency of getting him in early but I find the management of his minutes to be very strange when Bruno constantly looks wrecked and Pogba has been injured.

Jota cost about 10 million more and has been banging them in since his first game and in the CL too. His 10/15 goals would have made a huuuuuge difference in the tight games. That’s what I mean by fine margins. I don’t think it’s a wild call at all. I’ve wanted Jota since last season and Liverpool got him on a great deal. It’s not rocket science

Anything above £60m is a gamble for me
- A lot of his goals this season have been easy counter-attwcks with lots of space, he wouldnt get those in the PL
- Didn't look that great in the CL last couple of seasons
- Dortmund won't make top 4 which should drive price down
- If we wait until next summer he has 1 year left on his contract
- Less relevant but we've been burnt before with Kagawa and Mikhi who had very similar numbers to Sancho.

He'd improve us definitely but he's closer to the level of buying someone like Pepe than he is to Mbappe/Neymar
I think the point about goals from counter attacks and getting lots space could be said about many players. Wouldn't you say the same applies to Rashford for instance? People have this idea that the best players score all these really difficult goals, when in reality it's more often some defender messing up, a player being afforded too much space, counterattacks and scrappy goals in a crowded penalty area. I think this idea that Sancho, or other players you don't watch regularly, gets way more space is magnified by people watching goal compilations or highlight reels. Look at goal compilations from wingers in the premier league and you'll see there's plenty of goals just like that.

I only watched the second half yesterday for example, but that was a cracking half with both teams getting tons of space and counter attacks. Besides, United under Ole love playing on the counter so I don't see that as a big problem. Sancho is also a really good player against low block teams anyway. The fact that he's brilliant on the counter and therefore lots of his goals result from those, shouldn't exactly be held against him because that applies to the majority of wide forwards, including Ronaldo etc.

As for your point regarding being burnt by transfers like Kagawa and Mikhi, I sometimes wonder if fans put too much of the blame on the players' quality and signing the wrong players in general, when I think the question should be does United provide the right environment for players/transfers to succeed. Not that I'm saying those two players were good enough or free from blame, ultimately they probably weren't, nor am I just referring to those two. But, let's say since SAF's retirement, how many players have unequivocally succeeded at United, be it new players or homegrown? Very few managed to show their quality consistently. It definitely feels like that has improved under Ole, but I don't believe that's just down to player recruitment. It's simply not easy for (new) players to play well when the team lacks structure or isn't performing well.

If you look at City for example, they sign a lot of players for a lot of money but more often that not those players do well there because they have a functioning team. People are quick to judge transfers as flops when they arrive in teams that are not a cohesive unit, whether that's more specifically in attack like Chelsea currently, or more in defence like Liverpool. I think that's definitely definitely a part of why United transfers often look bad, yet fans in general always want to fix every issue with new and better players.

Sanchos numbers are miles better than Mhkis and Kagawas and he has done it 3 seasons in a row now

In fact Sanchos numbers are even better than KDBs when he played in the Bundesliga and Sancho is/was much younger.

Sanchos numbers are literally sensational.

And that last point is borderline insanity. Sancho is literally in the bracket just below your Neymars and Mbappe.

Sanchos numbers themselves are in Neymar and Mbappe bracket. His assist numbers are literally neck and neck with Messi each season.

He gets double digit goals and assists every season.

To compare to Pepe is an absolute piss take.

Absolute no brainer this one for me. With him on the right, Marcus on the left and Bruno through the middle we have a fluid, dynamic forward line that would rival any in world football. Add to that he’s still very young and appears to actually want to come here (speculating) I think we need to go all out again for this this summer.

Haaland would absolutely be a must buy for me this year too but I think that whole saga will get very messy and drawn out this year.

100%, and this was always the plan from Ole, he set his sights on Sancho the minute he walked in at OT.

And I think both Greenwood and Martial playing as a ST will benefit immensly from that setup.

If we go for Raphinha we can overspend on Haaland. It makes sense for this summer. Ship has sailed on Sancho. Plus sanho is more suited to LW than rashford. Personally i like Sancho Haaland and Raphinha leading our line next year.

A much younger Pepe but agree with the sentiment of the post.

£60m + Diallo on loan for 2 years (with reasonable clauses to bring him back if he is not played) would be the best we should offer.
feck that. They can take Chong but no way would I do a favour to those scummy small time bastards.

Doesn't seem like it at all though. We'd be ripped off for Raphinha, so it's not like we'd be saving a lot. They've only just bought him.

People need to get real with the Haaland thing.

I think if Cavani stays, we will prioritise Sancho as our main target

I think if Cavani leaves, we will prioritise Haaland/Kane

He cant cost more than 50 million and believe me thats a fair price. He is a very similar profile to sancho with a natural left foot and already plays here in the league. He also plays on the right. This is economically the best transfer for us if we also want to pursue Haaland. Sancho is a right footed play that prefers the left hand side. Ship has sailed. Id rather use the money for haaland raphinha and a deeplying playmaker to replace fred. Thats how we win the league next year.

This next window matters too much for us. We need to make a big signing which is preferably haaland and other quality shrewd signings(raphinha and a DM). There is no money for Sancho.

How good is Saint-Maximin? He can play on the right too and he is quick and could score goals and create goals and would be much cheaper than Sancho. Is he worth looking at?
