Glad to see the US resolution rejected, enough of this bullshit.
Has anyone got a link to the exact text? I tried a google, but all I get are articles explaining the substance without providing the source.

Hilarious that the UK actually decided to vote in favour, thought they usually tuck their tails in and abstain when it comes to the Palestinian issue. They really do fall in line with the US like the little brat cowering behind the bully.

This is the what was in the US draft according to the UN newsticker:

  • Makes imperative an immediate and sustained ceasefire with an “urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance” to all civilians and lifting “all barriers” to delivering aid at scale to Gazans
  • Israel and all armed groups must comply with their obligations under international law, providing protection for humanitarian workers and medical personnel
  • Condemns all acts of terrorism including the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October, the taking and killing of hostages, murder of civilians, sexual violence and condemns the use of civilian buildings for military purposes
  • Rejects any forced displacement of civilians in Gaza
  • Demands that Hamas and other armed groups immediately grant humanitarian access to all remaining hostages
  • Underscores the Council’s full support for the UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator Sigrid Kaag, the Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, so they can establish the new UN aid mechanism under previous resolution 2720
  • Stressed the importance of the Senior Coordinator leading efforts for the recovery and reconstruction of Gaza
  • Demands all parties respect humanitarian notification and deconfliction mechanisms in place to prevent civilian deaths
  • Rejects any action by Israel that could “reduce the territory of Gaza” and condemns calls from some Israeli ministers for the resettlement of Gaza or demographic changes
  • Reaffirms condemnation of the ongoing attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen on shipping in the Red Sea
  • Reiterates the Security Council’s “unwavering commitment to the vision of the two-State solution”

The Russians and Chinese not coming out of this looking particularly good. Not that Netanyahu would comply with any of these items if he thought they interfered with his military campaign.

Assuming this isn't satire, you ARE aware the US has veto'd pretty much every resolution in history, not only calling for a ceasefire, but also to condemn illegal settlements right? And you realise its a US sponsored genocide too?

The language in this resolution was pretty solid. Do you disagree ?

“To whom is the demand for compliance with obligations under international law [addressed to?]… Who is preventing the use of all available routes to the Gaza Strip? Who does not respect deconfliction and notification mechanisms?,” she said.

“We know the answers to these questions… Why then were the relevant demands in this resolution not clearly addressed to the occupying power, not even once?”

From the Guyana ambassador who abstained.

And while the US asking for only condemnation of Hamas, Israel continues its genocidal campaign burning homes and hospitals without a care in the world.

The Russians and Chinese not coming out of this looking particularly good. Not that Netanyahu would comply with any of these items if he thought they interfered with his military campaign.
Eleven council members voted for the resolution on Friday morning; Russia, China and Algeria voted against it and Guyana abstained. As permanent security council members the Russian and Chinese votes counted as vetoes.

It was unclear on Friday morning whether there would be a further vote on an alternative resolution demanding an immediate and unconditional ceasefire drafted by other council members. The US has warned it would veto such a resolution.

Sherine Tadros, the head of the New York office of Amnesty International described the US resolution as “an attempt by the US to absolve themselves of the abysmal record Biden has had so far on Gaza, and submit a resolution that is not going to end the war”.
“This moment requires unequivocal action by the security council, whose mandate is to maintain international peace and security, calling for an immediate ceasefire,” Tadros. “It shouldn’t really be so hard for them to do that.”

Explaining his nation’s vote against the US resolution, the Algerian ambassador to the UN, Amar Bendjama, pointed to the absence of a direct demand for an immediate ceasefire.
“The text presented today does not convey a clear message of peace,” Bendjama told the council. “It is a laissez passer to continue killing the Palestinian civilians.”

Looks like it had opposition beyond the vetoes, unlike the US veto + UK abstain double act on every previous resolution (which they will continue when the Algerian resolution comes up for a vote).

Algeria as the representatives of the Arab league also voted against it. Nobody in the world other than the US, UK and Israel believes what you just said.

Yeah the "immediate ceasefire" thing isn't an option in the absence of a hostage return deal.

Other countries that aren't involved in the hostage negotiations are completely irrelevant to the process. Unless its coming from the US, Egypt, or Qatar - the three countries involved either geographically or as interlocutors in hostage negotiations, they don't have any say in the matter. After today''s vote, its also highly unlikely the UN will be viewed as a legitimate venue to resolve the issue. That can only happen between Israel and Hamas and the three other countries working between them.

The resolution stops short of actually calling for a ceasefire, it only outlines a framework to reach it, under guarantees of all hostages being released from one side. It doesn't call for Israel to stop its genocidal onslaught, it doesn't call for them to stop their violence in the West Bank, or to even release their own hostages. Its a hollow resolution the US has drafted as a politicking trap, with no actual intention of ending the carnage. If they were genuinely interested in ending all this madness they wouldn't have veto'd the resolution put forward by the Algerians, nor would they have continued to play Santa for Israel's constant request for arms.

The fact you mention this putting Russia and China in a bad light is laughable. There's plenty of arenas where those two look abhorrent, but this ain't it. The US for decades has been the single largest barricade to a lasting peace, blocking any meaningful diplomatic condemnation of Israeli crimes as well as arming these genocidal maniacs. They don't get to pretend that they're finally the arbiters of peace with this craftily-worded resolution.

Algeria's vote against this fake, PR of a resolution shows you the viewpoint of Egypt and Qatar in regards to the US's biased role in this. That's probably why all negotiations have failed so far despite the US and Joe Bidens constant claims that they can successfully negotiate a ceasefire.

The ceasefire is contingent on both parties agreeing to it, which can't be imposed by the UN in the absence of both Israel and Hamas agreeing to what they've been negotiating via Qatar and the US for weeks now. Therefore the ceasefire will only happen when both parties come to an agreement, not when the UN issues an unenforceable decree that would be ignored by the Israelis.

The deal that has allegedly been on the table for a hostage swap and 6 weeks of ceasefire should be accepted by Hamas. Even though Hamas don't want fighting to resume after the conclusion of that period, the six weeks can still be used to continue negotiations to extend it. At this time, that is the only option to avoid an imminent attack on Rafa, famine, and thousands more dead and wounded.

I think I agree with you on most points, but I’d only add that we should also not pretend like Russia or China gave one single feck about the life and suffering of the people in Gaza. They’ll continue to vote in their own interest just like the US.

Yeah I don't disagree there. I don't believe for a second either of those two are sincere with their concerns, not considering their own track records closer to home. But they aren't the culpable party here, and its laughable to point fingers at them, ignoring the backdrop to why we're even here.

China and Russia are playing the game. Trying to gain influence with the Arabs in the middle East while the US shoot themselves in the foot.

And its working. The US choosing to die on this hill will only further dampen their regional influence to Russia and China's benefit. We're already seeing a similar effect play out in Africa.

Israel makes West Bank land declaration as Blinken visits
Israel has declared an area of the occupied West Bank as state land - the biggest in decades, according to activists - which could now be used for settlement activity.

The timing of the announcement, by far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, was significant, coinciding with the arrival in Israel of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken for talks on the Gaza war.

Blinken recently declared settlements in the West Bank to be "inconsistent with international law" - a reversal of the US's position under the Trump administration.

Smotrich - an arch-proponent of Jewish settlement activity in the West Bank - said 800 hectares (1,977 acres) of land in the northern Jordan Valley were now state-owned, meaning they can be developed.

"While there are those in Israel and the world who seek to undermine our right over the Judea and Samaria [Biblical terms for the West Bank] area and the country in general, we are promoting settlement through hard work and in a strategic manner all over the country," he said.

The announcement is likely to anger the US at a time of growing tensions with Israel over the intensity of its offensive in Gaza.

There are about 700,000 Jewish settlers who live in some 140 settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, areas occupied by Israel since the 1967 Middle East war and claimed by Palestinians for a future state.

The settlements are considered illegal by most of the international community, though Israel disputes this.
Nice little present for Blinken on pointless visit to Israel number 57.

It's not just that, they benefit directly from the genocide financially.

I'm waiting for the thread calling to boycott the Euros in the football forums.

I don't think anyone has made such claims in the absence of cooperation from both parties. Ultimately, its up to the Israeli government and Hamas leaders to make this happen.

The only way to stop Israel commencing another slaughter in Rafa and to help cease the ongoing famine is if the US stops sponsoring it and demands the Israelis let aid in, its not that difficult. Drafting pointless resolutions like this one achieves nothing besides pathetically attempting to deflect culpability to powers like Russia and China. Thankfully it appears the wider world can see through the US' insincere posturing.
