You're probably the only person in the world who thinks so. Shaw/Williams is better depth than AWB, Dalot, Laird, TFM?

Then we have Tuanzebe, Bailly and Lindelöf who can also deputise at RB!
I think a few people want an attacking right back to offer something different to AWB. Maybe that’s Williams though and we get a new left back instead.

Hopefully Dalot or someone else can step up and offer good cover for AWB, so we can put the budget elsewhere.

You put a proper functioning player on that right side like Sancho, and suddenly the desperate need for a totally out and out attacking RB melts away. It's the fact that side of the pitch has just not got the attention its needed for so long hasn't done any RB who plays there many favours.

The more I think about it, the more I think we should go for Grealish. He would add certain attributes directly, not least his' United-esq' attitude, but importantly he'd add a lot of flexibility to how we line up. Here are 4 quick formations that would be available to us with him in the squad, and he'd offer crucial cover for if Fernandes gets injured, even Rashford too.

I'm basing this on Pogba leaving. If we could sign Sancho too, then that would be wonderful. Can anyone think of another realistically attainable player who would add such a good combination of quality and flexibility to our squad?

Whilst a player like Partey would be a great specialist DM, that would not address our lack of creativity should Fernandes get injured. I'd rather 'settle' for Fred/McTominay (Matic) as a 6 or double pivot than put Partey in and force them further up the pitch or rely on current squad options to cover for Bruno.

Attacking formation:

Balanced formation:

Defensive formation:

Controlling/V.Defensive formation:

Dalot is definitely the more attacking option, but he needs to improve positionally which might come with time.

Ethan Laird is insane both defensively and offensively, and hopefully he'll stake a claim in a year or two.

Prefer the attacking formation, i think Grealish is more suited as a LCM than the 10 role.

I think Fred and McT have done well this season to deserve the benefit of the doubt going forward so in that vein I think we should use a 4-2-2-2 formation with two strikers, Grealish and Bruno as the AMs then Fred and Mctominay as the two defensive midfielders. Ideally I would want to sign a RW and DM but I think we don't have a true lone striker to play a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 effectively meaning that we would need a RW and a striker to be effective in those formations whilst with a 4-4-2 with 4 CMs or its 4-2-2-2 variant we just bring in Grealish to replace Pogba and play alongside Bruno. Grealish has the added benefit of being adept at drifting wide which I think will dovetail nicely with Rashford and/or Martial from the left. In this regard I think we could get away with signing Grealish as our major signing, keeping Matic for depth and signing a cheapish striker as back up.

Really warmed to the idea.

I’m even willing to look past the undercut and the fact he won’t pull his socks up.

Ditto.

I was all in for Maddison when he was linked to us, but Grealish is better in every aspect except for his socks and being a year older.

Leader: Grealish
G+A: Grealish
Work ethic: Grealish
Cheaper/more attainable: Grealish
Playing for a worse team: Grealish

His calves are too big. Socks don’t go past them. People need to be nicer to him.

It's his version of the Cantona upturned collar. I like it, too. A bit of swag and fearlessness about standing out.

We have just bought Fernandes so honestly why waste money on the same position when we have more pressing matters? Also Gomes can become better than Grealish too. Can anyone tell me why we should buy him now we have Bruno (Grealish is a 10 or LW and Rashford already has the LW down).

Because Pogba is probably off and we can't make the same idiotic mistake of relying on one player to save us again?

Yeah when has buying players in the same position like Barca, City & Pool do gotten anyone anywhere? We don't play that many games a season and never get our players injured anyway!

Bizarre post, mate. Sort it out.

@Judas @SweetRightFoot Grealish is not a Pogba replacement, in fact he plays in the same position as Fernandes, who some are already calling our best player.

Liverpool don not have 2 Salahs, Manes, Firminos or VVDs. What they have is a top quality manager and a great starting 11. It's simple fact that before spending, our clearly limited funds, on Grealish we realistically need a RW, 2x CM and a new CB. Thats simple facts.

Grealish is good but not so good that we need to waste money on a position that we already bought for in January.

Edit: oh and we need a striker too.

2 Centre mids and a winger? You do realise that Grealish has spent all of this season playing in CM and on the wing, right??

And no of course Liverpool don't have two Mane's, like Barca don't have two Messi's...

What they do both have is a stacked abundance of hard working technical midfielders to challenge for places and cover for injuries. At last count Pool had 7 for 3 places (Henderson, Milner, Fabinho, Oxlade, Wijnaldum, Fabinho, Keita) and Barca broke the transfer market last summer by equally ramming their midfield with quality. You agree with this strategy by wanting 2 new CM's but claim Grealish doesn't make sense because he'll cost too much for our limited funds? From a relegated team?

If you just don't rate him then just say so, you're walking in circles mate, bizarre.

Those teams play 433 and we don't. Since we just signed Bruno who plays as a 10 my guess is we don't want to switch formations. Grealish is not a CM. It doesn't matter how he is being played by Villa but that's not his position (have watched him since his underage days with Ireland). Also he is only suitable to LW, where we have Rashford, and we clearly need a RW.

Of course I rate him, as in I think he is as good as he is but not some incredible World changing talent. Like I said I believe Gomes can surpass him quite comfortably.

I think Grealish can play CM but not as good as Fred or McTominay. He can play AM but not as good as Bruno. He can play LW but not as good as Rashford. We can buy a proper RW instead of buying him to play him out of position there.

Before buying a player in Grealish's position we need to sort out the 4 positions I mentioned. He'll cost 50m and if our last few windows are to go by that will end up with us having to sacrifice buying a player for a more needed position.

I was all for buying him until we went ahead and bought Bruno for the same position in January, now I'm all for using the money to improve more needed areas of the team, Is that hard for you to understand?

I made a post earlier in this thread about football manager muppets who insist on claiming that elite level footballers can only play one position, in one formation and are inherently useless outside of their one specific pigeon-hole; despite presumably watching top level talents, and lower level ones too, change the game by playing differently or in different places. It baffles me how you can claim to be a football fan of any sort and not see how Grealish could play in the same team as Bruno and Rashford, in a multitude of ways. In real life, players don't get a -10 stat reduction for playing a few pixels out of position.

If the Bruno signing showed anything it's that a player with leadership qualities that is keen to get on the ball and make things happen can make a huge impact on this United team.

Grealish has really grown in maturity and leadership qualities over the last couple of seasons. He would be an excellent addition for his character as much as his ability.

People talk about limited funds. Bringing in a player who can operate in multiple positions in midfield is ideal for a squad lacking as much depth as United's.

The socks thing is cool alright, but we won't be saying the same thing once someone comes studs up on his shin.

It's amazing how many free kicks he wins and he never gets injured though. He'd get Bruno ten good free kicks per game.

It's crazy how people cannot get past the concept of a talented squad, not just a talented starting 11.

If it is true and he has the reported 45 mill release clause, we should buy him. Even if the fee is around the 60 mill mark we should buy him. He gives us options in a variety of positions. When teams play the low block against us we don't need two defensive midfielders. We will need ballers who can unlock defenses.

You also have to allow for rotation and for injuries. Also in my view I want a guy like Grealish putting pressure on other guys in the squad to stay at a top level. Our problem is there is almost zero competition for position.

This is a no brainer on way too many levels for me

What happens if Bruno gets injured? Do you want another season of Andreas, Jesse and Mata in that position? These three players who are simply not good enough for Manchester United will be shipped on in the Summer and Grealish seems the ideal replacement for the three of them , won't break the bank either if Villa are relegated. We are heavily reliant on a number 10 with Ole's formation.

Yea we need another center midfielder when Pogba leaves and an AMR as well but we can't ship out all the deadwood without some quality players coming in their positions.

I think our defense is actually the least of our worries and a replacement for Andreas, Mata and Jesse is needed. Grealish fits the bill completely and can play RW as well, a replacement for Pogba and a right midfielder is also needed.

A lot of deadwood will be moving on this Summer and Grealish fits the bill perfectly

Its weird people turning their nose on Grealish because we have Bruno now. Have people just forgotten what happened this season depending on just Pogba? Have people forgotten we had to play with Pereira or Lingard and sometimes together (even in their horrible forms)? And the thing is Grealish can play all across the forward line and the midfield at a good level, and he is also not the sort of player who disappears or hides when not played in his usual position. And the fact that he is a proper captain material is also a big plus for me. We need as many captains on the pitch as possible.

I doubt there is one person who doesn't understand that, it's simple

but rather, people are saying he isn't our first priority

take a look at the thread about which position is the highest priority, there is a massive consensus it's right wing

so do we have enough budget to throw £160m+ at two attackers in the next window? Maybe, but probably not

almost everyone would love him in the squad and to have a squad packed full of talented options, but that is not the only thing to consider here

who said he has a £45m release clause? we'll obviously be in for him if that is the case, but it sounds like bs

Given that we value Longstaff at 15m last summer where Newcastle ask for 50m, would be interesting to know how much Grealish would have cost us.
Our valuation: 60m?
Villa valuation (stays in Premier league)): ?m
Villa valuation (relegation): ?m

If Villa are relegated then they certainly have to sell players to balance the loss of revenue. I don’t think there are any buy out clauses in PL so it would depend on competition for his signature and his willingness to move to United. But I would be surprised if we paid in excess of 50m for him.

Mate we have needed a RW since Nani left. I agree we need to address the area and I would spooge my load for a Sancho or A.N.Other but considering we play with our full backs so high, it would not surprise me if the gaffer wants more dynamic central players. If Grealish is available I take him.

There were multiple paper rumours about a 45 mill release clause but it may be a relegation release clause

Just googled it and this is what the Villa manager said two months ago, “We have not got any clauses in any contracts that allow people to buy players for a certain amount of money."

If anything getting bruno streangthns our position on going for Grealish. I'd look to get him just for what he would bring to the squad.

He's clearly over his bad boy days and has evolved into a fantastic leader and talisman. He has incredible passion for the club he plays for and by all accounts, seems to have an affinity towards man utd.

Also, if we are getting rid of pogba then we absolutely do need another creative player in midfield. The more creative players the better. It's a squad game after all and just look at the volume of games and injuries we have to endure in a season.

A RW and Grealish will pretty much sort us out for the coming season. Yeah, a DM and a CF would be ideally added to that list, but come on who are we kidding.

If Pogba leaves he seems like the most sensible option. Not sure how he’ll work with Bruno though.
