Jadon Sancho| Staying at Dortmund for now

It's pre-season, players do interviews and Q&As all the time during these training camps and naturally the journalists ask them about Sancho, since his future has been the dominating topic these past couple of weeks.
Get out of it! If he’d publicly announced he’s staying it would maybe make sense but this is like us getting players last year to come out one by one and say how happy everyone is that Pogba is staying after we said we wouldn’t sell to Madrid. It’s absolutely pathetic. If Sancho is definitely happy about staying why haven’t you got him on camera saying it? Zorc has spoken on his behalf, the media leaks have spoken on his behalf and now you’ve even got your squad to speak on his behalf. Why not Sancho himself? He’s being put into a corner where he has to request to leave so he gets painted as the bad guy.

Keep hearing this but the 'poor service' argument goes both ways. Service will automatically look poor if you're trying to serve someone who doesn't want to be served. Our forwards are scorers of great goals. But they lack the anticipation and awareness to score basic goals.

Last night the ball was played across the five yard box and it went out for a throw-in. Everyone was criticising AWB for not looking up, and if you look at the situation in isolation then yes he should have looked up because the ball he played went out for a throw-in. But if you ask any proper goal-hungry CF they'd want that ball played exactly where it was played. Put Haaland or Lewa in the exact same situation and that's the easiest tap-in they'll score all season.

Yes our service isn't that good but at the same time we need to realise that our forwards aren't the smartest in the box.
That's fair, but I think it's a bit of both.

Rarely do our wide man get into positions that they can cut it back for a tap in like Dortmund do, look at some of Haalands goals he literally walks them into the net.

I do agree that Martial and Rashford especially need to switch on much faster and be more aware of getting into better positions for a tap in, but I guess that comes from the experience of rarely ever actually getting a good ball in.

When we do cross it's often a lofty back post cross or it's just smashes across the face of goal hoping for the best.

Pure cringe from Dortmund and the constant Sancho love in. Seems to me he does want to leave and they're trying to show him how much they want to keep him in an effort to convince him to stay and move on from the saga.

This is not different to Dembele et al in that they have a player who wants to leave, to come back to England. The transfer would not have got this far in negotiations if the club didn't have firm assurance the player is willing. Eriksen was a no go because he didn't want to come. The club do not pursue a target so aggressively unless he wants to firmly come.

Far from being over, this is entering phase 2. It's up to Sancho personally to make another decision and then pressurise who he needs to pressurise. There is nothing concrete to say Sancho doesn't want the transfer.

Just listened to a journalist from Germany on Talksport about 20 mins ago. He seems pretty confident that Sancho will stay now and that this situation is different to the Dembele and Aubamayeng in that the contract has another 3 years and if Dortmund dont get a massive offer, they will keep him as they desire to win the Bundesliga and feel this could be their season. I genuinely hope thats not true of course.

Other respected and reliable journalists are reporting that a deal is close and the fee has been agreed and its just the structure that needs agreement. Who knows, it really is a waiting game now!

Until Utd categorically come out and say they will not be signing Sancho this summer and withdraw any interest, then this will rumble on. I really hope Ole has emphasised to the board exactly how much we need to get Sancho in.

Dortmund finished 13 points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. They finished 3 points ahead of Leipzig and 4 ahead of Mönchengladbach. Who are Borussia looking to sign to make up that 13 point difference next season? Bayern Munich will not sit still either.

Devil's advocate: what happens to Sancho next season if Borussia Dortmund finish third or even fourth?

All these statements from Dortmund players is to try and stop Sancho requesting a transfer. It's desperate stuff

This is quite funny considering most people are calling the Bayern team one of the best in the world, they have improved their squad with Sane so, I expect a one horse title race.

I used to like Dortmund as a club.. this might leave a sour taste.
Bayern have been the best side, most consistent by far, in Europe this season and will only improve as they have some of the best young talent in Europe in their team. I don't think they'll be in danger of not winning the league anytime soon.

I just wish they would've shut up about their rivals last month though instead of belittling them . The 'point to prove' attitude we've seen coming from that rival since has become quite problematic in our pursuit of Sancho who we've had in our sights since Ole took over. They suddenly feel compelled to defend their status/pride and identity as a club now instead of acting in accordance to their usual business model of being content with selling their top talent for massive profit a few years after signing them.

How's Dortmund's fax machine these days? Might go on a bit long and we shouldn't wait to make sure it's tip top.

Honestly, if United had no intention of paying the fee I imagine by now we'd have moved on. This will drag on but we'll secure this deal. Also, why the feck are Dortmund so noisy? If they didn't give a rats ass they would just keep quiet and assume no deal. But no, all this Zorc blah blah. It's posturing. This is a selling club after all.

I was just about to say this, 3 players have come out and spoken about him staying. Weird.

It's everyone but Sancho himself saying he is staying. We're still in this. There's a long time left.

It's preseason, players are asked about all sort of questions. They talk about him as they are asked about the player, they don't speak about Sancho randomly.

United briefed last night after all this came out that they were still hopeful of a deal, so obviously there is still stuff going on behind the scenes.
It really is just a waiting game, and if Sancho does want to leave, then i imagine eventually he'll hand in a transfer request if he's serious. Who knows what'll happen though... but seeing as we briefed early on saying we've cooled interest in Grealish and made Sancho our priority, we must have some very strong faith in this going through at some point.

Agreed. I don't accept the idea that Utd can't afford to buy him at the Dortmund asking price. The only reason Utd are reluctant to pay that much is because they want to use some money in other positions as well.

There was talk of us wanting Sancho and Grealish and a centre back. Those 3 alone if purchased for a price WE wanted to pay, it would still cost £150m+. So we've clearly got the funds to actually meet whatever price Dortmund are asking for and in whatever structure they request. It's just down to whether Utd feel like they can afford to have Sancho as our only signing this window. For me, absolutely yes. We will be a massive threat if Sancho is our only signing. The other "problem" areas are not as big a problem as the significane and impact Sancho would have.

Bringing Sancho into this team will completely transform how teams approach playing us. Without doubt Sancho would be our biggest threat. The last few games of the season we have struggled with teams who have decided to press high against us. If Sancho was in the side alongside Martial and Rashford, it would be football suicide to give us that much space to play with in behind.

Most teams would double up on Sancho because of his threat. The amount of space and time this would create for the likes of Bruno, Rashford and Martial can not be underestimated. It will appear as if these other players have stepped up another level. But it will mainly be down to the fact teams will be mostly focused on stopping our biggest threat.

I don't think I am. My point is you can't tell the press over and over again that there is a deadline, (likely) tell it to the player who is in contact with United, but somehow keep United in the dark about it. That doesn't make sense: at the very least United would have asked them, or Lichtsteiner if he was actually involved, at some point about whether this deadline is actually true and if they had been lied to in the answer then I think headlines we'd be getting would be quite different.

Just towing the club line.
Seems like they're not only putting the pressure on United to cough up, but also on Sancho to commit to another season it seems. The fact that they're going to this extent seems to me that Sancho does want to leave, and they're trying to change his mind by asking everyone come out and show support. This one is far from done, and i imagine Dortmund are going to look pretty silly at the end of it (albeit a lot richer)
I think we need to start looking at this through the eyes of the Dortmund exec, and not as United fans. I previously thought this was pure brinkmanship but what is becoming clear is that Dortmund would be happy to keep to keep their man, just like OGS is happy to hold onto Pogba.

The mis-reporting of 'years left' on Sancho's contract changes everything. Let's put it another way, it seems as though Dortmund would be financially comfortable to retain Sancho for next season. This will now require some Sancho to agitate and United to find a way to stump up the cash

Let's move on and sign someone else if this is not going to happen.
Won't mind Dembele with an option to buy. His top level is something else and had more genuine pace and tickery than Sancho himself.
Can't be held ransome by one player and club.

The problem though is that we haven't made a bid.

If not Sancho, who are our secondary target? We need somebody who can rotate with the front three. Rashford isn’t fully fit and Greenwood is still very young and will have dips in form.
That's been my main worry over us potentially dropping out of talks here. The only links have been the likes of Coman and Dembele who for all their clear talent, have been quite injury prone in their young careers. The lack of a like for like alternative puts us in a bind when it comes to trying to really improve our options up front. Greenwood has been a revelation but is still just 18 and we're still an injury away from having a massive drop in quality up front.

Why Sancho has not spoken yet is a fair question, but as for his team mates: like every year Dortmund's press following has made the trip to Switzerland, like every year every player is meeting the press, like every year they ask about current topics: this year that is Sancho.

It's strange that all interviews suddenly appear 1 day after the press statement.

They started appearing when Dortmund began doing press meeting as part of their pre-season camp.

I was just about to say this, 3 players have come out and spoken about him staying. Weird.

I know you guys are disappointed and angry at Dortmund at the moment but let's not get silly here.
These are all responses to questions from the local news about Sancho. You would see the same at United in a similar situation.

The problem though is that we haven't made a bid.
Because whatever bid we'd make at this point wouldn't satisfy Dortmund. That's why we're dealing with their agents instead. The agents will negotiate on their behalf and try to find a good deal for them. Once we agree on a deal, we'll submit a formal bid.

Talk is cheap. I don't give two shits about which Dortmund player comes out and says what about any of their players and teammates. Every player has their price. We've seen it countless times before where a player says one minute that he loves a club, and then the next minute he is talking about how he "always dreamed of playing for this club as a little boy". It's happened a million times before and will always happen.

When was the last time we signed our big player of the summer early on?

Maguire was a week before the season started
Pogba a week before
Van Persie about 3 days before the first game
Yorke was about 3/4 days before

Lukaku was 10th July, but more the exception to the rule, and arguably not in this category, as Pogba came the same summer, and as above was late on.

My last post of the day, We need a Director of football to get our transfers done, Not Ed Woodward and / or Matt Judge, I hope we get Sancho.
If the board doesn't sanction the funds, what difference would a DoF make in getting an individual player? The DoF sets the transfer strategy, he won't necessarily structure the deal or sanction the funds.

If all of this stuff from Dortmund is true - they want 120m, by august 10th or no deal, then cool, we should absolutely walk away from this. JS is a quality player, but asking that money in this climate is ridiculous. At most we should be spending 80-100m on this deal. As much as I would love to see him at United, there are other players out there that could improve us for next year.

Let's move on and sign someone else if this is not going to happen.

i agree with this. leave Dortmund off and just take their word for it he’s not for sale. Don’t hang around only focusing on one deal. If sancho is genuinely unhappy then that’s still the best thing to do, leave him stew and hope they hit some rocky patch. Come back to it next year and if he really wants to come he’ll actually push against them. In the meantime we go get another really good player and hopefully aren’t as desperate for his services this time next year... it also sends out a message that we won’t be bent over when it comes to big deals.

Dembele or Chiesa this summer please.

How has Woodward 'done his best to mess this one up' ?
Is Woodward really United's chief negotiator? You'd think a CEO would hire a specialist to take care of that...? (Sorry if this has been discussed a million times before, but I am confused by all the comments about Woodward's direct involvement in every detail of this saga.)

No worries mate. Its a forum so we are here to disagree.

I will start with your last point. You say Dortmund are posturing to keep the player. If that was the case then why not simply state it clearly that he will not be sold. Why come up with this hypothetical deadline and a price? The very fact that they did means they are open to selling him.

Yes, I agree that barring a handful, all clubs have to sell their best players, but then that is the point, they do not pretend to be above selling their best players which BVB are doing here (or at least their fans are by claiming they are not a feeder club to the elite). If somebody offered us 200 million for our best player, and that player doesn't wanna go, Utd would reject that bid, because for Utd trophies would be more valuable than that 200 million. BVB would never do that because for them money is important. And this ties into the point regarding club ambitions. BVB are a well run club and sure they have ambitions of staying a top club, but they do not have the ambitions of being THE CLUB in Germany. Yes, this is of course related to their financial realities, which are different from a club like Bayern or Utd, but the point remains that they are not as ambitious as these clubs.

Southampton are widely referred to as the feeder club for Liverpool, which is unfair, but not totally untrue. Soton would accept that as long as they can maintain their PL status with the odd run in Europe and get big fees for their top players, they will be more than happy. That is the extent of their ambitions and they would accept it. BVB fans don't seem to accept the extent of their club's ambitions despite repeated evidence for the same.

And lastly, I do not agree that selling Sancho will see a massive drop in BVB's league position. The likes of Reus, Brandt, Haaland, Hazard etc coupled with a solid defense are more than good enough to get top 4 in the Bundesliga. Similarly, even keeping Sancho I don't see them really winning the league because more than quality, BVB lack the winning mentality that Bayern have in spades.
BVB would never agree with your assessment of them though, and they would think it's quite insulting. It's a top-of-the-pile kind of perspective that essentially declares all other clubs fairly pointless. ('You won't win anything anyway, get over it.') Even if BVB won't be able to challenge next year (which is too early to say), they'll want to build rather then slide down, and show other players that this is their focus. I can't think of anything that improves for BVB by selling Sancho (as long as they don't urgently need the money), so of course they put up their best fight.

I think all the people who are convinced that this is just posturing by Dortmund are going to end up very disappointed come the end of the window. I really want Sancho. But, i'm of the opinion that Dortmund won't sell for less than 100m+ and we won't pay that. They are under no pressure to sell at all. From their point of view they don't need to sell him for less than 100mil since he just signed a new contract and if they wait another year then Covid's impact should lessen the longer they wait then the market/world will return to something more normal. Not only that but Sancho's value will only increase with his performances.

Is it made by this guy?

You are my SOUL MATE!!

If Sancho was staying and that was that, they would have drawn a line under it, got back to business and refuse to talk about it anymore.

The fact they are doing everything they can to keep the story in the media and paint a story of how committed they are to keeping him speaks volumes.

Do you see United talking about Pogba every five minutes?

Pogba was the year before Lukaku. I think we signed Lindelof and Matic that year with Matic being the late signing.

I think if we sign him at all it’ll be soon as Dortmund won’t sell late in the window and they’re trying to push the agenda - Sancho will either request a transfer or says he’s staying this week I reckon.

No, its this need for rival fans to group together against big bad Redcafe to set us all straight. Its a waste of everybodys time. Its not even about Sancho. Everytime German football is questioned, or even a simple player link, the Bundesliga fans come running, ready to scrap.
My problem with this is attacking the English press and Utd ourselves. We havent made anything public, Ole refuses to comment on it. The English press have been muppet killers by refuting every German report about his close negotistions are, wages being agreed etc.
But feck me Dortmund are running to the press every day about 120m, deadlines etc etc fecking etc. Theyre holding press conferences on fecking deadline day, their social media accounts are trolling for no reason whatsoever. Their fans are taking this way too personally.
When Pogba was linked to Madrid, how many soundbites do we have from Ole? Did Woodward ever comment on it?
You cant claim Utd fans are kids when the other side are publically gloating in a one sided PR binge.
Love to see it though.
If I could, I would 'like' this post.

Depends on what you mean by big player, is it a big fee or big name player?
Before preseason started

2014-15 -
Shaw - Record breaking deal for a teenager/FB at that time
Herrera - 30 million was a big fee back then.

2015-16
Schneiderlin, Bastian, Depay all before preseason

2016-17
Mkhi, Zlatan, Bailly all before preseason. Pogba was on vacation till first week of August, so when we signed him didn't matter much

2017-18
Lukaku, Lindelof all before preseason

2018-19
Fred, Dalot all before preseason

2019-20
AWB before preseason.

We have done plenty of big names or big money signings before preseason started.
