Surely he goes elsewhere next summer
Why would he? He's already in the head space of joining us. Big salary, mate's play for the club. He's spoken to the manager at length about where he'd play and fit in etc.

Having massive changes at our club would be the only thing to dissuade him now.

Just think he will feel we have messed him around too much this summer and sign for someone else instead

Don’t think we have. I’m sure we are trying behind the scenes, we wouldn’t have agreed terms if we weren’t. I’m not convinced there will suddenly be loads of other teams that can spend £100m+ in 9 months time.

This does seem to be something a lot are overlooking. Speaking only about the UK we're probably not far off going into another complete lockdown and even if football is allowed to continue it'll certainly continue behind closed doors likely for the entire season at this rate

Would that have been us messing him around or the impact of a global pandemic? Irrespective, if Dembele comes this move is delayed by a year like the Sane-Bayern move was when Perisic went on loan.

We're getting the best of both worlds here, especially if Dembele moves with the option of a permanent move. For me Dembele is more naturally talented than Sancho and is arguably the most talented player of his generation. It'll be up to us to make the most of that talent while he's here, but if it works out it could greatly improve our bargaining position vis-a-vis a Sancho move.

Like I said before, a truly ambitious club gets both if given the chance.

EDIT - The fact that this move is likely to be a loan deal rather than a permanent one would indicate that we are confident that we will have the resources to do the Sancho deal next summer as well.

It really is a win-win move. Especially if Barca are wanting as little as £45m to have the move made permanent. That's chicken feed for someone with the talent Dembele has and wouldn't preclude a move for Sancho next year. fecking do it Woody.

Exactly, I'm happy with either scenario and ecstatic with the Dembele deal if it includes an option to buy. It's clear that Dortmund aren't budging, so we either have to pay up the 120m or be stuck with our current options, which in that case makes Dembele a home run deal.

How can either of you be happy with Dembele. The guy has been plagued with injuries and does not want to join United. This has the makings of another Di Maria/Falcao all over again. We would also miss out on Sancho and there is no guarantees we will get him next year - it is wishful thinking that we can postpone the deal like that.

People think that Dembele who has had serial injuries will come to Utd and magically stay fit. Here. At Manchester United. Where the only constant is injuries.

I had similar problems when we were signing RvP and thankfully was proven wrong but in this case we are effectively helping Barcelona with one of their billion problems.

Rvp only stayed fit because he brought his own fitness coach too, let's not forget

Do you have faith that Ole can last this whole season? If we don’t up our form, things will go pear-shaped for Ole pretty soon.

You must be talking about form like being unbeaten away from home for 16 games on the trot.
Yeah it’s all really going pear shaped. :wenger:

You must be alien to the idea of strategic planning since you cant see what they are trying to do. Its ironic considering that your moniker is 'treble winner'. How do you think Fergie got there? It was years of build-up, brick by brick.

The current form of our players is worrying. That streak you talked about included last season and our "in-form" period. Now we are out of form and didn't have a proper pre-season. So our form would be harder to get up compared to normal.

The board doesn't have patience or a coherent enough vision to plan things ahead "brick by brick" even in case Ole is gone. And make no mistake, our board will fire Ole if he fails to secure Champions League football (Through top 4 or other means). They did this with Moyes, Van Gaal and Mourinho. As soon as top 4 looked unlikely or mathematically impossible, they fired the manager. They would likely have the same treatment with Ole. And the top 4 race this season looks fierce.

Hypothetical scenario: If we get Demeble for a year loan with option to buy for 50m, and he made a Bruno like impact to us, should we go on and buy Demeble instead of Sancho, who would be valued at 120m next summer again anyway?

Sancho is going to force the move, because his dream is not to play with Haaland, Reus and Co., but with Maguire, Lindelof and Co.

Pogba, Van De Beek, Rashford, Martial, Greenwood. Fixed that for you.

*Shit, I forgot Bruno.

Would give us a dilemma but as many have said I find it hard to believe he will able to stay fit long enough to make that kind of impact

They would have to bring Sancho and someone else impressive in for that.
i read the thread that someone else made the other day about our squad registration situation and it may explain why we went into this window with the single minded goal of only landing sancho and vdb. we can't really spread our acquisitions out over 3 or 4 lesser players knowing full well imo that offloading people like lingard, pereira, jones, rojo, smalling, etc. will be an issue.

Which full time utd manager since fergie has survived finishing season without cl football?

I’d be fine with taking Dembele! Assuming he’d proved an end to his injury problems.

Am sure this scenario is also playing heavy in Sancho’s mind and will focus his efforts to force the move at a compromise price.

of course he can join other clubs but he won’t get the huge global platform that an English born no 7 at Old Trafford would get anywhee

How about we act like a big club for once and get both of them? If an injury-prone Dembele can play regularly for us, it will be our own "Robben to Bayern Munich" moment. And Sancho could be our own Ribery. Rashford, Martial, Greenwood will battle it out for either the striker spot or inverted striker spot. They will all be on their toes because the prospect of being offloaded is real.

That's what big clubs like Bayern and Real do. Isn't it about time we aspire to act like one?

Sancho or not, this has been one of the weirdest sagas even by Ed Woodwood's standards.

What a massive mistake to make it so public that this is our primary target when it's well known that the selling club are hard negotiators, and will use this to their benefit.

The whole thing is a big botch up and now we are 5 days away from the window closing, with a 50 chance of going empty handed. Trying to do a cut price loan deal for a regularly injured forward who doesn't want to come here. You couldn't make this up!

Dembele, on paper, is a good alternative. Dembele, in actuality, could be an absolute disaster because of injuries. That's the roll of the dice we'd be making.

Yeah very much a case of we could end up with snake eyes, however we might be lucky and get double six

How have we messed him around if his club refused to negotiate? 120mil upfront especially in this environment is the same as not for sale.

The last time Fergie finished out of the top four was way back in the 1990 before the top 4 became a thing.

He never finished below third since winning his first title with us.

The man is the greatest of all time.

He is not fore sale though. We should have pushed months ago
That's fine but if that was the case it's Dortmund that messed him around by promising they will let him leave. 120mil upfront was never going to happen and they knew it. We did the same with Pogba last year.

Sancho told The Times yesterday that he’d also be happy to join next season if that was the eventual outcome.

Big day today
I think the time has now arrived.
Am expecting next 36-48 hours to be a flurry of bluff, counter bluff, activity, chaos, finally ending in Romano saying ‘Here we go’.
Come on Woody, it’s your time to shine.

That's that then. Dortmund never had the intention of letting him go and that's why the unmatchable price and refusal to negotiate.

I don’t think it’s messing someone around when his club apparently says he can leave before putting a huge valuation on him in the largest economy crash of our time.

End of the day market conditions change and everyone saying we should just cough up £120 million out of thin air because it’s the United way is living in dreamland.

We are obviously negotiating hard because this is the real world and as soon as Dortmund realise that too, the sooner this deal gets done for the benefit of all parties.
