John Murtough appreciation thread

Wasn't he involved in Ole's contract renewal or at least giving the staff new contracts when we were well into the rot that would see Ole fired. The guy was dismissing concerns about Ole when we were fresh off 3 defeats and a draw. He was a key cog in the machinery that threw away our season and cost the club significant money because he had his head dug in sand. He has a lot to do to right this ship and even when that is done won't be enough to make up for the gaff of a wasted season.

What has he been doing since he joined? Amazing how one interim appointment, made later than it should have been, of someone who's never managed at a top club before has gotten everyone so excited.

It's been reported that Murtough acknowledges that he lacks football experience and knowledge. Instead of learning on the job, he wants to hire experts, which is why he has got Ralf in.

Yes, he made mistakes with Ole, who was also brought in by the old regime of Woodward, so instead of making mistakes that Woodward kept making, he learnt. He realised he needs a refresh, the club needs a new footballing structure.

Sometimes, credit has to go for people who realise their flaws and look to correct it.

Think that's Richard Arnold not Murtough.

Can we please wait before we start unzipping? It might turn out amazing but let's see some results first.

The source for this information?

The decision taken by the club and Murtough is positive in itself. We appear to be making the right decisions and progressing.

Yes it might not be a success but the logic is clearly there.

First bit of smart, forward thinking in a while, hope we continue to do so.

Cant ignore the fact of the decision to extend our whole backroom staff for 3 years was also made.. but time to keep positive and look ahead. Ralf is a smart appointment

Murtogh is not different to most fans here.

Most of the fans were the reason Jose Mourinho was bought here - they should get blamed all individually and put to the spot.

Murtogh should be blamed for Ole but if everyone is chuffed about Rangnick then he has so far done a good job on his round 2.

Let's see if it continues.

Yeah let's wait a few years before we prematurely lavish him with praise.

Remember the excessive praise and "like a boss" memes of Woodward here years ago when he signed all those players for Val Gaal?

Why should Murtough be blamed for Ole? Murtough was the head of player development at that time and it was Fergie who is reported to have asked for Ole as interim.

Because nothings been achieved yet! the bloke he's appointed hasn't even sat down and taken his coat off yet. I'm all for some positivity on here, because its been grim for months, but it quite obviously premature.
But he appears to be doing things differently and identifying the correct people. ThT deserves praise after the poor decision making of the past it’s refreshing.

Apparently he’s spent a few years going around Europe making connections with very well respected people in and around the game. He’s built a relationship with Rangnick which a has lead to this appointment.
Which deserves praise. That’s all I’m suggesting.

Well then I take it back and he has been good in everything so far. Good young players and a good manager appointment.

Everyone just sits here and complains about every event - like the fans never had anything to do with our shit period too.

I'm with you here and there's much misinformation being spread.

He has done good job but lets wait till we see the results on the pitch. It's too early to make any conclusions.

Hang on a bit. I could see Woodward overuling everyone on decisions here and everyone just having to be a yes man. Now it looks like everything is changing with Woodward leaving and like an oil tanker the club is slowly turning the right way.
Lets take it from now or even January (Woodward will be gone and a consultant doesnt have the final say its only an opinion) and judge him and Arnold from then. So far post Ole everything seems to be moving in the right direction.

Jose Mourinho was not a bad idea, even though we got him too late. Ole wasn't a bad idea for an interim neither. What set us back so much is giving Ole a permanent job and giving him 3 years and 500 million to spend. If we just went along with the original plan of looking for a new manager after Ole, I'd reckon we'd be a whole different club now.

Wasn't he involved in Ole's contract renewal or at least giving the staff new contracts when we were well into the rot that would see Ole fired.
Presumably. Maybe he expressed concerns and got overruled. Maybe those who overruled him now realise they were wrong, and have come to understand he needs listening to.

Maybe that was either made up by the press, or deliberately leaked to put people off the scent.

I admit that I’m taking the most optimistic view. But then you’re taking the most pessimistic :)

The hero we didn't know we needed.

All hail Murtough

All hail Woody. He is still the current Vice Chairman isn't he?
