Jose Fonte

No chance are we signing a 33 year old CB.

He will go to Benfica to replace Lindehof. All makes sense really.
 
I'd love to have him here. He's an an experienced head and provides excellent cover at the very least.
 
Yeah I think Fonte missed his chance to join Utd last Summer.

Can't see the sense of buying him now, wouldn't even be cheap.

At a great cost probably. Last big move for him, looking for a bumper salary etc. We have Bailly, Smalling, Jone, Rojo, Blind, apparently Carrick :smirk: (not to mention academy players) who can fill that role - Fonte would be someone wanting to play every week and I wouldnt put him ahead of most of those at this moment in time.
 
Could be a chance we'll sign him as a stop gap seeing as Rojo is mental, Jones could be injured any minute and Bailly is off to the ACON.

Anyone fancy him and Evra joining us this month?
 
Southampton fans have been saying hes been playing shite this season. Maybe cos hes been wanting to leave since Euros, but I dont think we need him anyway. Rojo/Jones are doing great and it doesnt need to be broken up right now. And we have Smalling to rotate where needed and Bailly will be back from ACoN in a month.

I don't think he'd have bumper wages here, nor would he cost as much - he's in his last year of contract and requested a transfer.
 
I think we'll try and sign him. Ilori and Sakho are both leaving and we only seem to have three actual CB's.

Lovren put something on social media recently about seeing Fonte soon so maybe there's something in that (unless he was on about the EFL semi finals).
 
33 years old, handed a transfer request, last window where they can still get a decent price for him. He's not going to be very expensive. 10-15m I would reckon.
 
Can't help but think about the last time we played So'ton. He had a mare tbh. Martial literally ran through him.
 
After Bailly, Mhkitaryan, Zlatan and Pogba, if Jose wants him I'm all for his decision making on the transfer front. But I think this ship has sailed. Rojo and Jones didnt even look like options in August when this rumour first started. I'd hope we'll wait until the Summer and bring in someone at CB.

Wouldnt be the worst option for City at the minute.

I would have taken him at the start of the season. But the way Rojo and Jones are playing there is very little point in signing a 33 year old.
 
Don't rate him. We don't need another cb right now anyway.

Agreed; Fonte to Liverpool I think is behind this.
 
Hopefully he goes to Liverpool, Portugal or China. Not good enough for United and we don't need him.
 
There was a time this summer when it would have been a reasonable signing. But at this point with Jones and Rojo in surprsing form, Bailly off to an excellent start and Smalling out of the training room, I don't think we need Fonte as a stop gap any longer. And beside all of that Blind can still play CB if we need him to.
 
He would be good cover, but definitely not first choice given the form of Jones and Rojo, with Smalling and Bailly as competition. We have enough depth to get going now, and should be looking at a long term CB replacement for our next signing, which has to be someone better and younger.

City, Liverpool look likelier destinations.
 
Could be a very good signing, hope we try and get him. For those who are saying we don't need him need to have a look at our defenders, rojo has had a good few weeks which included being lucky to not receive 2 straight reds, jones is currently fit and playing well how long can he stay fit though, smalling is smalling, utterly useless when midfield isn't protecting him. Bailly is off to afcon and his team will most likely go all the way. Add to that fonte has something none of the defenders are capable of which is actually organise the defence and he is a leader, something our defence still lacks.

I get your point.

I'm a United fan, and if anyone we sign does not make us better then they are crap.

I.E Buttner, Kleberson, Djemba-Djemba etc. all were probably better footballers than you and I, but were not United quality, hence they were crap.

Point is, not good enough for us. We need to start building a proper squad as well as add some nice depth, and he should not be a part of that
