Why would you believe that? I bet there is no league in the world right now he would be out and out best coach around. Even in leagues like Bosnia, there are coaches more progressive than him. Obviously they will never reach the management level at which even this shadow of Mourinho operates, but their views on football are much more in line with modern thinking than his. Which speaks volumes about who Mourinho is today.
I'm not sure it's even a tactical thing, it's still possible to play defensive football and contend, the problem is he's a parody of himself as a personality now, slating the players, saying the same things, playing the hits. There was a time at his peak he bonded teams towards a common goal, now they're at a whim to his moods or whatever crazy notion he'll have on a given day. If he was a TV character, he'd have jumped the shark a long time ago

He never was a tactician at all, just a handsome bast*rd a la Johnny Depp. Now, he just seems Dick Dastardly in the body of Statler from the Muppet Show.

Heroic draw. Seriously, Jose will do well to get to Christmas. He’s a dinosaur.

I genuinely believe he was the worst manager in the league by the time he left Spurs, even behind Bruce.

I’m genuinely shocked that Roma are in a tailspin this soon into Mourinho’s tenure there. I was sure he’d do a decent job there and solidify them as a top 3 team in Serie A and make a respectable push in Europe.

This is getting ugly very quickly…
To be honest, José is getting better and better at filling his bank account very quickly.
It used to be 3 years. He bettered it to 3 months it seems.
The guy is a kind of genius. He is fooling everyone, he is here for the cheque book.

In the post-match interviews he kept blaming the referee for not giving Roma at least 2 penalties.
He didn't bring up the offside goal Roma equalized with at all.

Just heard that Mourinho gave "the most disgusting interview of all time". Blaming referees for "2 obvious penalties". Looking forward to seeing that. He can't coach anymore but keeps entertaining. :D:D

Meltdown in full swing. It's probably the only thing he's gotten better at. He's fine tuned it impeccably.

I think he just hates football now and he's just in it for the pay offs.

Just saw the post match rant with the interviewer. Classic Jose. Won't be long now.

He really has been left behind, hasn't he. The whole pragmatic thing isn't as effective as it use to be imo. Teams are far too rich and good these days to just expect your team will be so much better than the other team that purely motivation will be enough.

Couple that with the fact that his motivational approach is ancient and you have his current predicament. He isn't going to find young players today who are gonna be hyped to run through walls for him because he keeps chanting about how he wants his players to have big balls and shite like that.

Roma have now only won 1 of their last 7 matches in all competitions. This is quickly turning disastrous.

Must be a nice feeling knowing you can do and say whatever you feel like in your job, and at the end of it you get sent packing with an extra few million quid in your bank account as a reward for your lack of professionalism.

You'd think there would come a point for rich people where the positive affects of money wears off, and all they're left with is an empty feeling as they look back and reflect on how horrible they are as people. I hope so anyway.

Even Ivković is better than him right now probably.

I think people are exaggerating how outdated his tactics are.

I think it's more likely that he just doesn't give a shit about these jobs. If you've managed Real Madrid, Chelsea, United, Inter, won multiple Champions League trophies, etc. would you really care that much about Roma? C'mon, you know you're not actually going to win the Serie A or anything.

Reminds me of Ancelotti slumming it up at Everton.

He’s quickly becoming the type of manager that Mourinho loved harassing when he was at the top of his career , specialist in failure. Given his need to highlight past achievements and to explain why nothing is his fault, or why something unrelated is because of him, I doubt it’s something he just ignores.

Tactics are tactics, doesn’t really matter what they are unless the manager finds the right way to utilize the players and make sure that the players understand their role. The overall package deal with Mourinho simply seems outdated

Are we still gonna get the media using him as an example of why we shouldn't get a top class manager? This of course is despite him showing with us, Spurs and now Roma that his days are long gone

Yeah, but they also scored a goal that was an obvious offside.
2-1 = 1, so it is not exactly even, is it? If those were given correctly, they would have, likely, won 3-2.

Mourinho clearly is not interested in football, anymore. The difference between when he was at Chelsea/Inter is so stark to now. He used to be lively and clearly loved being a manager, but you can tell he just doesn't like it, anymore.

He just cannot be bothered. That is the real reason he is failing. It isn't anything to do with tactics etc. The real reason is he just has absolutely no enthusiasm for football.

Sure. The reason a team fails isn't because how it's set up but because of their manager's "enthusiasm" levels. Makes lots of sense.

It's so strange how things turned out with Mourinho. It wasn't that long ago that he was hailed as one of the two best managers in the world. He practically started his senior managerial career winning the CL with Porto. He won the domestic league, wherever he was at the time, in 2003, '04, '05, '06, '09, '10, '12 and '15. Then he just seemed to hit a wall and turned into a bit of a joke in a surprisingly short amount of time.

People like to say that his decline began at Real Madrid, but he did win the league and both domestic cups at a time when Barcelona were probably the greatest club side in the history of the sport. He won the title and league cup upon his return to Chelsea and then it all fell apart, and I'm not sure I can see how a relatively young manager could go from winning trophies practically every season to being a dinosaur in such a short span of time.

He's not exactly known for beautiful football, but it was self-evidently effective up until it suddenly wasn't anymore. He has a history of falling out with owners, but that didn't stop him from winning in the past. While we can see for ourselves that his teams no longer play well, I can't say there's a reason that's obvious to me. It's not as if football went through some pivotal change around 2015-16 that suddenly made his approach outdated in one fell swoop.

His career's trajectory is akin to what it would have looked like if Messi had suddenly entered a steep decline at the age of 27 and was now playing for Valencia.

People say the Madrid job broke him, I actually think not getting the Barca job is what broke him and started his evolution into the bitter man he has become today.

He of course went on to win the CL with Inter, but priding himself on playing anti-football. By the time he was at Madrid, and head to head against the man who took his dream job, he went full on crazy going to war with everyone from almost the off.

He then went through the same again not getting the United job which he clearly coveted, he had it about him still to drag Chelsea to victory in the league but that was his final hurrah it now looks like.

I think he can handle the press, fall-outs with players etc. but what he can't handle is the lack of respect or admiration he feels he is due and for this I actually worry for his mental wellbeing based on recent years, even if he does conduct himself like a shithouse most of the time.

Cannot believe this moron had so much support amongst our fanbase, but then again we are persisting with OGS too.
To be honest with Mourinho I actually thought Chelsea was a blip turns out it wasn’t.

It's his mentality, not just a tactical problem. Started in his last year at Real Madrid and became a major problem in 15/16 Chelsea season with the Eva situation and falling out with most of the players. Should have taken a sabbatical then and found some joy in life.

Amazing he's carried on getting work at top clubs for 5 years since. If he's ultimately sacked by Roma surely the end for him till he sorts himself out?

Thing is, after getting sacked at Chelsea 2nd time, at United and at Spurs, every time Mourinho did inteviews in which he'd say something like 'I cannot be too long out of football, can't wait to be back' etc. I don't think it's lack of enthusiasm, he is probably hungry for success as his ego is damaged, but it's like he cannot turn his teams into successful ones and it frustrates him to the point where he moans and turns toxic all the time now. They are 4th in Serie A so it's not like they're in horrible position (and it's a team that finished 7th last season under Fonseca, so so far it's an improvement) but he's been too negative last few weeks and it's like a 3rd season sindrom has come in early. Too often Mourinho seems like he's mentally drained and in need of sabbatical. Don't think he'll take sabbatical though, he didn't after Chelsea or United and maybe it would've been better if he did.

Of course it makes sense. They're not independent things; your ability to set up a team will be limited if you're just half-assing it.

You make it sound like every manager carries around a book that says TACTICS in it and their job is to just look at pages from the tactics book.

I think it's true. He feels he doesn't get the respect he deserves for winning the CL twice, The PL, Serie A and La Liga. If he will stop acting like a dickhead.

More on the tactics side than the man-management side, but one of the best lines I heard/read about Mourinho and I don't remember where from is that he went from being pragmatic to being dogmatic.

In his early career he found effective tactics to play within the context of how football was played at that time. Everyone called it anti-football, but instead of just brushing it off and keeping a clear mind, it seemed to wound his ego and he feels he now has to continue playing the same tactics and prove that they can win, instead of looking for effective tactics for how the game is being played right now.

Roma were 7th last season and currently sit in 4th which is good enough for CL and is clearly the goal for this season and they still remain amongst the more likely winners of the prestigious Europa Vauxhall Conference Coca Cola Trophy. Their next two league games are against weaker opposition so I would not write him off yet, they were quite unlucky at the weekend against an AC Milan team that is unbeaten in the league and were also victims of daylight robbery in the 1-0 defeat at Juve. There is too much invested by the new owners and the chief exec for them to pull the plug before giving him at least a couple of years to build a team unless he drags them into the relegation places.

As you said: Roma made a major investment, their biggest investment in the last 10 years, unlike with previous owners who always balanced incoming transfers by selling someone. Now they have a deeper squad which was a big problem last season, where they had to play a midfield of Diawara and Villar due to injuries.

But beware that last season Roma had more points, more goals scored and more clear chances created per match than this season at gameweek 11. Int this season Sassuolo and Atalanta are not as solid, same applies to Juve and Milan, which means that Roma has the ingredients for a top 4 in the end of the seaons, but I suspect Mourinho will not make it.

They had 21 points, they have 19 now; they had 24 goals, they have 19 now. Statistically insignificant differences.
Fair to argue, though, that Mourinho should be an improvement over last season, not a wash.

The most overrated coach of all time failing at yet another job. Hate his persona and style of football.
