Jurriën Timber | Arsenal player

Never understood this with some players they have the opportunity and faulter over not taking the step. Haaland (though it's a poor example) to some extent is the same, I remember seeing an article about competition with Martial causing doubt to a move before he joined Dortmund. Timber would have undoubtedly pushed Maguire out the starting 11 by what he brings to the defence alone.
Well that didn't ruin Haaland's career did it? Same for Varane when we signed Phil Jones. Didn't harm him.

If he came here next season would it be to play at right back? Imagine the insufferable comments about his height if he was a centre back and paired with Martinez

Varane left for Madrid so not exactly a downgrade , it could also be argued that halland didn't come for other reasons then being scared of martial who himself wasn't exactly established by then(and still isn't).

Ten hag would surely have tried him in the center back role had we signed him, would have brought the solidity that Martinez has now?

would be interesting to see whether we go back for him or not, although it's clear it won't be for the cb position this time.

Maybe as a right back.

Yeah, I think it would be as a RB. We need one, he can tuck into midfield and Antony is gonna be hugging the touchline anyways. I think the difference would be that instead of him constantly getting forward like Mazraoui the half-space that Antony opens up by being so far wide would be exploited more by Bruno or the #8.

There are not that many top quality RBs around so it would make sense to develop him as one

I think we were planning to use him at right back and as cover at centre back. Wouldn't be surprised if we're in for him again next summer.

Possibly the reason that we didn't go all out for a RB this window?
Timber is a very versatile player though, the sort that every manager loves to have in his squad, so I'd be quite surprised if we are not heavily in for him next opportunity.

Will be watching tomorrow with great interest to see how he performs at Anfield against a top prem team. Especially as we’re still interested in him next summer.

Will he be that high a priority next summer? We will need to spend the majority of the budget on a striker for sure.

Watching Timber get occasional bollockings from Martinez leads me to believe he is very talented but switches off. To be expected considering his age. This season without Martinez will be the making of him as he wont have a big brother to dig him out

We still need a RB. From what I’ve seen Timber would be much better than our current options and would provide cover at CB as well if needed.

Also, I’m sure ETH would be keen to move on Maguire and Lindelof.

I love Martinez but Bassey has been more than exceptional together with Timber this season. I do see a need to sign Timber next year for UTD as I think Maguire is done at your club.

Can’t speak highly enough of Calvin Bassey. Fast strong reads the game well gets up and down the pitch and his recovery is exceptional. If only our scouting department didnt turn their nose up at players playing in Scotland he could have been a United player.

Would he play next to Martinez? Are we really going to play two short cb’s? I kinda doubt it.

He can play RB, but he is not the best option there.

It wasn't a problem for Ajax, not even against the slightly taller Eredivisie strikers(compared to the PL)

Having one short central defender can work. I definitely can't see two short central defenders working in the Premiership so I'm pretty sure this ship has sailed, unless ETH sees him as a fulltime rightback (unlikely).
If the concept was to play 3 at the back then I think you could easily have two shorter CBs but who knows. There are plenty of ineffective tall defenders in the Pren right now

This could work, no?

----------------------#9----------------------
Sancho-Eriksen-Bruno---Antony
-----Malacia-Casemiro-Timber
------------Martinez-Varane-------

like how City played against West Ham basically.

If he is a top rb, I’d be for it. I’m not sure it is his best position.

He’s too similar to Martinez in stature imo to play next to him. You want different types: Martinez will be best next to a tall cb. Especially in PL.

....sancho....rashford...Anthony...
Malacia...eriksen...cesimiro...right wing back
.......martinez....varane....Timber......
....................keeper with good feet....

Bring in say livramento and raya and than could work well though

This ship has sailed. No way we start two shorter centre backs, and we shouldnt change the system for a centre back either. I think he will be lining up for either Madrid or Liverpool next season.

I can see him going to Madrid to play part-time right back and centre back for a season or two before eventually partnering Militao in central defence once Rudiger and Alaba hit 32.

Something like that. I think he’ll cost a fortune too.

Unless he can be a top RB or DM I'm not sure it makes sense anymore.

We can expect maybe 2 years tops from Varane who is 29 - and that is with injuries permitting. Otherwise we are back to Maguire/Lindelof and all the problems they represent.

Timber is 21, and if he is anywhere near as good as Martinez who is 24, then they could become our CB pairing for 7-8 years. Also, Timber can actually play RB too.

In any case, we will need a top CB to pair with Martinez in a season or two.

I won't be surprised if tiny Timber is played as a FB. That's were ETH played tiny Blind.

Two short CBs won't work in the PL no matter how we try to force it and no matter the talent
You can get away with one but two is a gigantic overkill
As others have said unless he's coming to play at RB(Dalot making that spot his own) ship has sailed

I think we should keep an eye on Armel Bella-Kotchap. He looks like he is going to be a very good CB.

I think we should keep an eye on Heinz Tomato-Ketchup. He looks like he is going to be a very good alternative to McSauce. :D

Not that Timber is a bad player but I’m glad we signed Martinez instead of Timber. Timber looks like he has excellent ability but can have the tendency to switch off. Where Martinez looks 100mph every second with high intensity which is what we needed more.

I would worry if Timber and Martinez became our CB pairing in the future. I’d rather have Timber at RB.

Why only 2 years of Varane? 31 isn't old for a CB

Edson Álvarez had to cover for him so many times tonight, missed the header that lead to the liverpool first goal.

Why is there no thread for Edson Álvarez man was outstanding at DM tonight.

Said it even before we got linked to FDJ, alvarez is a top pure cdm...we should have just offered 150m to ajax for 3 players rather than waiting till the end of the window for 2. FDJ would have only made sense if we got someone like alvarez. Casemiro is better but also older....maybe 2 years left in his tank. On the hand alvarez is just entering his prime

Because he's pretty much got one foot in the door at Chelsea..

Yes, perhaps not, but considering his injury record after joining us and Ten Hag's preference ideally to play a higher line, we will need one more CB option in the squad who has recovery pace (neither Maguire nor Lindelof do).

That deal is dead in the water. It was a desperation heave by Chelsea in the late hours of the window. They won't go back next year. They'll probably chase the shiny toy in Declan Rice. He is very gettable for us IMO, that is unless he balls out for Mexico at the World Cup and they go deep in the tournament.

Was shaky yesterday in the first half, poor for the first goal.

You can lose a header sure, but that was awful defending by the entire backline.
