He’s being rewarded for staying, that’s all
He has 2 years left on his deal, Ajax don't want him walking out for peanuts next summer. It was in the works before any discussion of United came up, and had he not shown willingness to sign he probably would have been sold, even if it was against his wishes.

Unless there's a release clause it's a very stupid move. Schreuder won't let him leave for several years.
I can imagine his contract will not even be extended, and if so, maybe by a year.

Ajax pretty much always let their players leave, as long as the bids are appropriate.

I think the contract will be extended by at least a year for sure. Ajax would be stupid not to and if he doesn't extend there's no reason for Ajax to give him higher wages. There needs to be something in it for Ajax as well.

Timber knows it's better for him to stay. Ajax gives him a higher salary, Timber extends his contract unless one year more. The question is if there will be a release clause or not. Ajax will probably be reluctant, but obviously the player is in a good position too so there might not be a way around it for Ajax. However another option is no release clause and the player taking a share of a future transfer fee.

We'll see. Sometimes these details get out quite quickly. Good news for Ajax that he stays at least one more year. Hopefully even two and then he can leave after Euro24, provided we qualify of course.

I’m glad this move didn’t happen. Feel like we got the better player in martinez. He’s more of a leader aswell.

I believe Ajax has rewarded star players without extension before, during EtH's reign. I am not sure though.

It is just a token of huge appreciation to the player to opt to stay longer at the club, though it may not be that sensible financially. These things would make Ajax more appealing to players in the future as well.

On plain sight I agree with you. Ten Hag however doesn't agree. When he left Ajax he said he saw Timber as a future leader of the team as he possessed all the qualities to be a leader. Ten Hag also chased Timber and then went after Martinez after Timber chose to stay at Ajax.

Nevertheless, I don't always agree with Ten Hag. I do think you got the better player with Martinez (at this point in time at least). As for Timber's leadership qualities, I hope Ten Hag is right. We'll see next season.

In most cases an extension was part of it though, albeit with buy-out clauses. Unless maybe the player still had 3 years left on his contract, then it could be that Ajax just rewarded the player. But with 2 years left, there's just no point. You're not going to just give the player higher wages and then see the player walk out for a small fee a year later because only 1 yr contract is left. In this case for example it's better for Ajax to agree to a 35m release clause alongside extending his contract one or two more years, then it is to just raise his wages without extending. In the last case Ajax would be forced to sell him for 15-20m next year. This doesn't make sense at all. Hence I'm pretty sure Timber will extend his contract. The question is if he will force Ajax to agree to a buy-out clause, or if Ajax can persuade him to an extension even without one.

Penny for your thoughts now, Jurrien? Half your team's gone, a season of rebuilding with a new manager.
Didn't he stay for the guaranteed play time with the WC and all?
If so then we might land a bid in jan or next summer.

Possibly, if the plan is to shift Macguire.
Nah 2 short center back is one too many. Martinez has been good but teams are going long towards his area, imagine if we play two of them.
Pass unless it's at right back.

Do we still need him though? We already have Varane+Martinez, who looks good and well balanced.

I agree, not only that but does anyone honestly think we're going to go back for another Ajax player? I don't think our good relationship with them would carry on.

If we continue to pay like we have so far they will sell, but not this summer.
Our relationship with them is still very much intact.

If Timber pulls through then we'll come back for him in a season or 2. Win-win.

I am very happy we got Martinez instead. Next season we will need a RB only so I doubt we are in for him

That must be a lower priority for the next window though.
I don't see this happen at all now we bought Martinez instead. 2 short CBs gonna be huge issue, especially when Timber is not as good in the air as Martinez. Timber is serviceable at RB, but for the fee Ajax may demand for him, we're better off getting a proper RB.

Yeap. I think we are done for the next couple of years from recruiting from Ajax unless we get Van de Sar next if Ratcliffe buys up our club!!

How small is Timber? I had him pegged as a long term Varane replacement, guess not if he's a short arse

I think we'll be after him next summer. He's a similar profile to Varane.

Maguire will be moved on.

Varane, Martinez, Timber & Lindelof as our 4 cbs.

Timber last official height was 1 inch taller than Martinez. He may still have some growth, but I don't think it's unlikely to get 3 or 4 inches.

Martinez is good aerially for his height. He's good at timing and have good leapt. Timber looks like you get what you see for his height aerial ability wise.

I believe the original plan was getting Timber, and occasionally use him as RB. But since Timber listened to LvG and chose to stay, we bought Martinez instead. Now EtH got a reality check with having shorter players cover each other in PL (Martinez and Fred as no.6), he should be wisen up not to go all Ajax with Timber and Martinez. Especially when we still need to spend handsome for at least 4 positions (long term starter GK, RB, CF, a midfielder preferably creative type), and Ajax doesn't sell cheap.

Should have backed himself rather than listen to LVG.
Never understood this with some players they have the opportunity and faulter over not taking the step. Haaland (though it's a poor example) to some extent is the same, I remember seeing an article about competition with Martial causing doubt to a move before he joined Dortmund. Timber would have undoubtedly pushed Maguire out the starting 11 by what he brings to the defence alone.
