Kevin Strootman

Haven't seen him at all recently, but if he's like he was pre-injury then he would be a great partner for Pogba.

I'd assume he is playing well as he's playing regularly for a pretty good team. 34 appearances this season is good.

Didn't he break down after his initial injury? If he's completely over it, great.

If we're selling Fellaini and Schweinsteiger and Carrick is leaving, we'll be light in midfield numbers, so we'll need a midfielder or two. Strootman is a box to box, however so he'll be competing with Herrera, but at his peak imo he's a more complete player compared to Herrera.
Edit: Are the reports accurate?

Agreed. He strikes me as having a bit more grit and is significantly better going forward than Ander.

Would rather Nainggolan if we're signing anybody from Roma. The guys is a beast.

Am I right in recalling he played in these sort of setups for Roma?

De Rossi
Strootman Pjanic

Paredes
Strootman Nainggolan
He'd be coming in more as a squad player than a partner for Pogba.

Yeah he's tailor made for this league too. No idea what he'd cost.

Would be a good signing. Perfect replacement for Carrick.

Strong, intelligent, composed, good tackler, vision... and only 27 years old.

Yes, I'd say Strootman is very similar in play style with Matic, so the link to a Mourinho team on paper makes sense.

He has suffered already an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament. So, we should be looking elsewhere. I'd go for Paredes who's also younger and would be more of a Carrick replacement than a Herrera one

isn't he a box to box midfielder?

if so how could he be considered a replacement for Carrick

He's been amazing this season. Saying that, he has played a lot of the season as a CAM in behind Dzeko, which explains his impressive goals and assists stats this season. Nainggolan will also turn 29 this summer, which isn't very old, but given that Roma will ask for £35m+ (one of, if not their best performer this season and has even captained Roma a few times this season, when De Rossi hasn't started), it might not make the best business move. Strootman, at 27, makes more sense from a market value POV and will likely cost a bit less, though he will cost a lot given that Roma are tough sellers.

Moyes should have bought him back in the day, it was a no-brainer. But then he also messed up with Thiago and Herrera.

I don't think so this season. I know they've been playing a 343 recently, Nainggolan and Salah are sort of playing as winger-forwards like Hazard and Pedro have been for Chelsea. I think Strootman and De Rossi/Paredes(?) are the CMs. Maybe someone like @giorno can confirm.

You think ? Matic always struck me as more of a versatile DM with box to box qualities. Strootman strikes me more as a versatile box to boxer with both AM and DM qualities. He's a galvanizer, which is something our midfield could use given the current personalities.

His injury record is worrying. I think he would be a good signing though if he stays fit

Probably the closest midfielder to Schweinsteiger bar putting the current knackered player Bayern kindly sold to us in a time machine.

I would have concerns about his injuries though, like someone else mentioned the risk on Gundogan backfired on City this season.

Does Mourinho ever sign players with bad injury records?

Yes, I agree with that. Matic has played primarily more as a CDM, with Strootman better at pressing in the opposition half as a box to box, though he has been playing a fair bit in a 2 man midfield this season alongside either De Rossi or Paredes. But, they both have very similar qualities in that they're solid defensively, comfortable in possession with a good passing range and can drive the ball forward from deep (both are left footed as well, but that's somewhat insignificant). Perhaps a better comparison/comment is that Strootman is the midfielder LVG wished Blind would be when signing him.

Really wanted him like back in 2014 or whenever. But he's had a-lot of injury problems.

ACL's aren't the career-enders they used to be. And we should stop focusing on envisioning a perfect Carrick or Keane replacement and just get more viable options in midfield.

Ander is one of my favorite players but we need competition and options for CM.

His injury history is a big worry, but beside that it makes so much sense I actually believe it. Contract expires in 2018.

Hmmm, I seem to remember a quote from Mourinho praising Matic where he went on about how Matic's left-footedness made him unique or something like that.

I'm not too sure tbh, but that seems more of a LVG thing to say. I think Mourinho mentioned how Chelsea were crazy to sell a 1.95m tall midfielder, so he has prasied his height before.

Here it is, not really how I remembered it but still made a point of mentioning that left foot:

"Mourinho said: "If I had been here – left-footed player, 1.95m tall – a midfield player like that would never, never leave."

He's a player I've never been enthusiastic about, makes more sense than Bakayoko though.

I'm not giorno, but you are correct.

I'm not too keen on Strootman.
Wasn't Pjanic, Roma's best midfielder? And he went to Juventus.
And how has Strootman been playing since he recovered from his injury?

In any case I don't feel he will join us.

Price dependent for me, the injury history makes it a risk and I imagine they'd want big money for him which may be better spent in another direction.

If there's even half a chance of getting Weigl that should be the priority.

He's actually playing really well this year. He plays next to de Rossi and behind nainggolan in a midfield triangle.

He gets more freedom to roam than de Rossi and he has really good pace and engine for his size and a good left foot.

The only worry are his injuries. He's had loads of them and Jose doesn't easily sign players with bad injury records
