So I've really liked Squid Game and All of Us are Dead. I see Netflix has a fair number of these Korean TV Dramas, so I was wondering if these are as good? Next up I think is "The Silent Sea", "Kingdom" and "Sweet Home".

Anyone watched these, or can recommend any more that are good?

Best Korean show ever is Running Man

What about Korean films?

All of Bong Joon-Ho’s are worth a watch. Parasite is the obvious one but Memories of Murder, Mother and The Host are good too. Watch out for the numerous unnecessary drop kicks in all of them.

Do they still televise Starcraft matches on Korean TV? It is by far the most entertaining form of eSports I know of. You’ve never lived until you see how a live audience in Seoul reacts to someone pulling off a Zerg rush

Best Korean movie I know is Oldboy. Avoid the U.S one with Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen.

Kingdom and Sweet Home are decent. Sweet Home more in the sense that it's a bit of daft fun.

I would recommend “extracurricular” as a good watch, but the main actor kid got “canceled” due to past bullying incidents, so they’re not making any more seasons☹

Must give it a watch.

What is it about south korea. They really know how to make good stuff both film and series wise.

As a Korean-American I grew up watching a lot of film/tv and have seen the improvements over time, but still cant pinpoint what it is. I think most international film and tv have improved in quality while the US/Hollywood have stagnated and gotten shittier and repetitive. It feels like 80% of what gets released these days are sequels and remakes.

They are very hitchcockian be it a series or film. Parasite was a pure hitchcock film.

I think they really turn it as a business. They did their homework and find out what we actually like and make it. From the filter, the casting, even the plot seems to hit the right tune

The world is in vacuum after Hongkong relinguish their movie making prowess in the 90s. Well at least for us asian movie lovers.

I am guessing they are studying hitchcock in the schools/colleges.

The Silent Sea is ok. You can give it a watch though not an unmissable series by any means.

The wife and I are somewhat going through an accidental Korean phase. Not a tv series, but we watched The Wailing a few nights ago. It was great. Would recommend. Kept us guessing until the end and we were talking about it for a fair bit afterwards. Haven't seen it discussed anywhere, but it's a masterpiece.

We also watched The Silent Sea a few weeks ago, which we both loved.

I went through a Korean films phase a few years ago. I can't stand them anymore.
Same here. My phrase pretty long though. From 1998 to about 2015ish. Now all the korean dramas are repetitive and i have only watched those select few actors/actresses i like.

Kingdom is the latest that i enjoyed although not really latest. I don't even enjoy Squid game though i watched because of the lead actor.

First korean movie I watched was My Sassy Girl, I'm pretty sure there's already an american remake that must be trash. Then also saw a film from the same director of Parasite called The Host. That was a good watch during the pandemic.

I hated Squid Game. As for Korean stuff in general, I can't be doing with the bloody melancholy.

Yup handmaiden was a masterpiece. Very sexual and disturbing at the same time. My wife can’t watch his films, too repulsive for her. But the “jingle bells” at the end
Old boy as well. Pure genius.

So I watched Vincenzo after a recommendation from here.
After getting used to the silly style of Korean acting, I really enjoyed that. Watched Healer after that and enjoyed that to.

I liked Squid game, but I didn't get the hype, it sort of fell off early doors once the shock factor left.

Hand maiden is basically porn

My Name and Stranger best two I've seen.

Kingdom will get around to watching at some point.

Silent Sea was pretty shit.

I never got into Korean movies or TV. I've been recommended Squid Game and i'll check it out soon.

I actually prefer Chinese movies and TV. They have some good dramas on Netflix.

Agree! Its the first show i watched when resubscribe to Netflix. The sequence (?) with Jun Jihyun is also very good.
That finale felt exactly like that Game of thrones should have been. With the white walkers

Loved sweet home, certainly got a classic resident evil vibe to it. Alive is also a good watch. Kingdom is just epic.

Very very very very long story short, Samsung directed a lot of effort to learning established Hollywood screenwriting techniques.

If you think 'dur durrr WTF does Samsung have to do with this', then yeah.

Both of you now please direct your attention to this post:

You're about ten years ahead of the curve. Hopefully the laggers catch up to people like you.

There seems to be a focus on actually making good stuff rather than marketable stuff they can drag out.

While watching My Name I couldn't help but feel it would have been dragged out over 4 seasons if made in the US, padded with filler, irrevevant storylines and ads. Its like 8 or 10 episodes and theres like 4 season finales within it.

Sorry, Spoondog. I wish :(

Ask RN.7. Almost can't go wrong.

I *was* recommended a comedy on Amazon(?) about a man who dies but then it turns out your afterlife is determined by your still-living spouse(?). That sounded interesting.

I've seen a few recently, the last one I enjoyed was The Boys. Anyway, I suspect you know Korean cinema, Hungry!

If you replace 'Korean' with 'certain things about the business side of world', then yes.

(Again, sorry for no recommendations.)

EDIT: Also I keep trying to tell RN.7 that his favorite Korean director is a bit scummy but he's putting up some staunch resistance on that front.
