Irwin was never ok . He was brilliant on either side
Irwin was two footed. Williams is not. Plus FB's are expected to attack a lot more now than they were in the 90's. In the 90's right sided midfielders were right footed and supplied the width. Now it's the opposite with right footers on the left and left footers on the right, so FB's typically supply the width...

I honestly think Pervis Estupinan of Watford could be available for much lesser than what was quoted for Telles and Regulion. Not saying he is worldclass, but as a squad option with potential to be better and at age and price, is really a no brainer. Worst case is we sell him in a few years and breakeven.

Based on Opta stats from last season. The top 4 (green) are my outstanding candidates:
Alex Telles (10) - MotM, heading, assists, crosses, touch, possession, goals(*), key pass, shooting
Lucas Digne (9) - heading(*), assists(*), defending(**), key pass, touch
Vitaliy Mykolenko (7) - heading, avoid yellows, foul magnet, goals, long balls, crosses, passing,
Álex Grimaldo (6) - MotM, assists, avoid yellows, key pass, possession, shooting
Nuno Mendes (4) - through balls. avoid yellows, defending (*)
Sergio Reguilon (3) - dribbles, foul magnet, shooting
Renan Lodi (3) - defending (*), foul magnet
Pervis Estupiñán (2) - MotM, dribbles
Aaron Hickey (2) - dribbles, shooting
Fode Ballo-Toure (1) - possession

I took 11 candidates for left-back. Gave them points for stats they do well at. Occasionally they got 2 points (*), or 3 (**) when they do very well or stat is really important. Telles is top because he's a dead ball specialist so gets goals others can't. So Mykolenko is my choice (he also scores on potential being one of the youngest). There are other LBs I didn't include because they're unobtainable or too expensive. I shouldn't have included Digne; he plays for Everton, who will charge us the earth.

Physically Mykolenko resembles a bit Marcos Rojo. He also has the physique to play at LCB in a back 3 line up.

Much depends on how he will adjust to higher level competitions.

Think it may be the latter now. Requilon doesn't want to move. Telles interest has faded, so this leaves Myolenko. I have never seen him play so can't judge.

Go get him so. Could solve the LCB for this season.

I don’t know. Club supposedly thinks very highly of Williams so unless the plan is he should play at RB just can’t see them going for a LB when his rise to prominence was built on being a decent LB. There is Laird to come through as well who many say is better.

From the sounds of it Reguilon was being pushed by Madrid looking for a buyer and he was offered to United. United weren’t looking for him. Telles more than likely standard Portuguese press.

Long rambling article in MEN, by Daniel Murphy, says we are 'monitoring' Reguilion and Mykolenko. Anyhow we have Shaw, Williams, and Mengi who can play there. Looks like that's the end of that: settle in for another season when we give up chasing a trophy before we even start.
Why? If Shaw stays injury free he is a very good player, he may not be as good in the tackle as AWB but his aerial presence, positional play and reading of the game is of the same level of not higher. He’s also very good in the transition, first and second third of the pitch at least, granted he could improve in the final third but AWB isn’t exactly tearing up the right side and there aren’t people clamouring to sign a replacement back up there?

I really hope we don't pull another "Jones" on Mengi and make him fill on the left back position when he is a CB. Let him develop their at his own speed

Shaw is injured a fair bit leaving us with no left-footed fullback for about 25% of games. With Telles on the market for under £20m, it's stupid not getting him. If you think Telles is too old I like the look of Mykolenko who, for me, is a more natural defender. Both are left-footed. We have no youth prospects who've shown they can step up. I hope we're not relying on this 17 year old from Real we just got: Alvaro Fernandez Carreras, nice footballer; but he looks like a DCM, not a leftback!

AWB got 4 assists in PL matches last season. We're not clamouring to sign a new right back because AWB is very solid defensively and we have 4 or 5 who can play there: AWB, Dalot, Williams, Laird, TFM. All 5 right-footed.

We desperately need one, but we won’t sign one & will rely on Williams again. Recipe for disaster.
I agree.
I don't believe that a Left Back was ever on the shopping list.
Telles & Reguillon becoming available for less than €30m might tempt United, but that will be reacting to a stroke of luck, not because of any planning.

Reguilon gone, Lewis gone.

Who else do we have ? Telles ? Firpo (just pulling some random names out of nowhere. No idea if they are good)

I try (and usually fail) to not be a kneejerk tranfer muppet, but you are spot on.

First, Luke knows there is no real challenger for his spot. Brandon Williams is decent at best, but he is heavily right-footed and is never going to offer any attacking production as a LB. So what encentive is there for Luke to fight and improve and be desperate to keep his spot? Theres not. So he can coast, maybe gain some weight here and there throughout the season, and never lose his spot in the starting 11.

And thats not even mentioning our options when he picks up his inevitable two month injury. Then its Brandon Williams every game? Dalot and TFM?

I am amazed we just let Pervis Estupinan go unchallenged, 22, very hard working, good going forward, great at crossing and only 15m. Very low risk if it didn't work out...

He was at 5 clubs prior to this latest move, No-one in the entire of LaLiga has lost possession on more occasions (551) than Estupiñán this season.

Yeah, he was on loan...typical post from someone who's never watched him play and watches football through stats...

Just heard Tagliafico talks being held with Ajax, any truth in it is something I cannot confirm
Did you intentionally leave the way you phrased that open for interpretation? Because as far as I've read, Ajax just want to renew Tagliafico's contract (Telegraaf); it's not that United are in for him.

Many papers in South America are linking Tagliafico with United, also ESPN comentators during the match talked about inside information from Tagliafico's camp. Again not sure how much truth in all that, but at least that's clarification on what I meant on the previous post

Fair enough. Personally, I think it's just his agent briefing journos etc. so that he gets a better contract from Ajax. I also think we haven't pulled the trigger on the Telles deal yet cos we're waiting to see what happens with Alaba.
