Let's talk 'keepers: who do we buy and why?

Vivell monitors this thread. The good thing about United being linked is that there's finally a compilation video of him.

Top 1% of keepers for crosses claimed, Top 4% for goals prevented. No other keeper in Europe is in the Top 5% for both.

He looks really impressive for his age

Looks good. There are a fair few saves he makes that the likes of Onana wouldn’t even reach - that’s before we start looking at errors.

On that, would be interesting to see the highlights of the goals he has conceded this season - that’s likely to be more telling.

I'd honestly stick with the guy but emphasize the shift in play style where Onana can show his actual strength before getting rid. People calling low-level-keepers forget that those guys also make mistakes but they mostly go unnoticed.
You can’t actually be serious in wanting to keep him?

I really like him, but considering the amount Frankfurt sold Marmoush for and the one they are asking for Ekitike, I doubt we have any chance. He also just renewed his contract until 2030.

He had a hilarious own goal against Mainz, besides that I can't remember really big mistakes (I've watched most Frankfurt's matches, they are kind of my favourite BL team in recent years).

He had some situations when he didn't make the best decision, but often had the size and agility to still save the situation. And after all that's expected for a player who plays his first matches on that level (so far 12.5 games in BL/EL, came on as an injury sub in his debut match).

Thanks for the reply. Didn’t realise he had played so few games. Do we think more of a no 2 then for United? Whilst talented, perhaps not the right time?

Great prospect. Courtois-sized frame and yet somehow has the spring and reflexes of a 6'1" keeper.

If he can use his feet at a level of anything better than De Gea or Bayindir, I'm sold.

As I already said today, as a player I like him a lot and he would make sense, but I don't see the transfer happen.

He is under contract until 2030
He is likely to be No 1 for a team playing in the CL next season (Frankfurt as currently 3rd with 5 points ahead of 5th placed Mainz most likely will qualify).
Frankfurt already briefed that they will not sell this summer, and when they are ready to sell him down the road they expect him to be a 60m transfer. And they have no reason to accept an offer for him. It's likely that Ekitike could become their big money sale in the summer, probably Larsson as well, combined with the likely CL income they could be in the strongest financial position of all BL clubs (except Bayern) in the summer and having to find solutions in midfield and attack (again) should keep them busy, I really don't see why they would want that trouble on the keeper position as well.

For him personally a transfer back on some bench doesn't make sense now, only being first choice should be attractive.

I don't think we can buy an expensive goalkeeper this summer, so we need an experienced competitor to Onana who won't cost a lot, someone like Leno.

We buy Martinez, simple as that. One of the best keepers in the world playing for a club significantly smaller than ours who'd obviously love the step up. I'm surprised not many are thinking of such a solution, it would be VDS all over again. Guaranteed quality at every level and every bit a modern goal keeper as all these new age coaches love to have.

I just want a keeper who commands his box, comes and claims crosses and makes the routine saves with a worldie thrown in every so often.
This. Loads of keepers can offer that without breaking the bank. You would be surprised at how many decent keepers you can find knocking around in South America, scouts don't come looking for a goalie but the next Messi or Neymar. The ball-playing tends to be De Gea level but I would give my left bollock for peak De Gea right now.

Apparently we had scouts present for Porto's game to watch Diogo Costa. Apparently City want him as well and think they can get him under his £64mil release clause. Allegedly they have offered £58mil.

Proper keeper. Definitely an upgrade on Onana.

Not even sure he's a clear upgrade. Negative shot saving stats and no more commanding than Onana. If were still doing that transformative passing gibberish then sure, he's quite good at that, but he's below average at everything else. Not worth anywhere near the price tag.

Had one good season among the last five.

Any in particular you like for us? Mycael has been linked previously. I'm aware he's playing in the second division in Brazil so maybe it's hard to gauge. Frankfurt signing Kauã Santos from Flamengo is looking like a genius move but he hadn't played a first team match. With probably the current best two keepers in the world coming from Brazil, it's hard not to assume that they may have more in the pipeline.

I also have a feeling that the caretaker market is going to move seriously this summer. Personally, I would like to see United try it with Diogo Costa, he has character, a good footwork and he stays young. Onana doesn't reassure me at all... And I agree, Schmeichel remains untouchable in our hearts!

I don’t think he’ll be sold to be honest , there was a bit of media talk when he fecked up just like Watkins was coming to OT after he gave that interview . It dies down again as he had a decent game v Lyon and didn’t do anything stupid v Wolves.

City rarely make mistakes in the market, if they think Diogo Costa is good enough to replace Ederson then he's definitely good enough for us as well.

Unpopular opinion but I think with a limited budget and bigger priorities, we should keep Onana. He had a good season last season and he has the ability to return to those levels
Single handedly knocked us out of the UCL amongst other blunders in the league. Who were you watching?

I’m not up to par with the news, but what is the problem with Ederson? Are they selling him?

We aren’t spending nearly £60m on a keeper. £20-30m more like.

They were after Sanchez, Fred and Maguire! They make a fair few mistakes, but deal with far more effectively.

Today vs Valencia another incredible save by Joan García. A top, top keeper. At bargain price. He should be your top target.

Alex Meret is a free agent this summer?

Supposed to be signing a 2 year extension with a +1 option on the club side but cannot see anything saying it is signed yet.
Thought it was too good to be true

I'm not a scout, just an observer of something that has held forever: keepers aren't as sought after as outfield players and many excellent ones spend their entire careers here. Go check last Copa América squads and I'm positive 90%+ of goalies don't play in Europe.

Re: Brazilians, maybe part of the explanation is the fascination with ball playing goalies. You can take it for granted with them even if they haven't even started a single game like Kauã. We are far more focused on keepers that keep clean sheets. E.g. I know Rochet isn't the best with ball at feet, but spending over 1000 minutes without conceding across league, Libertadores and WC qualifiers is something I will always appreciate in a goalie.

I'm not at all convinced that a Keeper is high on our priorities list.
There is only so much a limited budget can fix, and I think Onana will be reprieved for another season, whilst we focus on attackers.

I think Leno is a good shout for a cheaper option.

Experienced, good shot stopper and also has experience at the top level - not great at playing out from the back but if we’re buying Delap surely long balls for him to chase and use his strength will become our thing.

I think Arsenal have that signing wrapped up. They've been linked with him for over a year now. But i agree, if we keep Onana, Garcia at that price is a great deal. He can take over easily if Onana has more blunders or leaves for Saudi.

Arsenal have already Raya. I don't think they will buy another keeper. Garcia is better than Raya: he is 24 years old and he is already the best spanish GK and one of the best in the world. He has a release clause of 25m euros: a real bargain.

Joan Garcia, Lucas Chevalier, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, Mark Flekken, Mile Svilar, Bart Verbruggen, Diogo Costa..

So many options

I don’t think replacing Onana is on the agenda for this summer
