Really interesting signing given how many CBs you have. Ten Hag is being back which is great for you.

Does he have many caps for Loompaland?

Sorry, my first and last height joke.

Who cares about the fee.

The guy turned down Arsenal and desperately wanted to join.

Now THAT'S the type of guy we should be signing.

Welcome Lisandro

So, like most fans, I get excited when we sign a player and you quickly convince yourself the player is going to be a superstar....however...

Given our recent record in the transfer market, I now have an element of fear whenever we sign someone. I hate to say it, but IF Martinez flops...it will be pretty easy to look back and say "the signs were there"

First of all, I think many of us have made the point in the past that the manager should not have such a huge influence on signings. We saw under Moyes, LvG, Jose and possibly even Ole than we were just signing players the manager knew, for the most part. This is not a good strategy for obvious reasons.

Secondly...this lad is 5ft 9", doesn't seem to be quite a DM or quite a CB. From what I was reading today, he initially came into the Ajax side as a midfielder but lost his place to Gravenbach. Sat out the side for a while whilst Daley Blind started LCB and then eventually came into that position. Now, personally, I just can't believe we have signed someone who is 5ft 9" to play CB in the Premier League and I can't believe we have spent €50m on a CB when we have four viable options at CB already. There's other far more pressing areas to address. So can he play RB? Will he play DM? It doesn't seem clear.

I really, really hope this works out but it does have the hallmarks of another signing which we look back on as doomed to fail from the start...unless ETH has a plan up his sleeve
Well, I hope ETH have a plan just can't figure out what this plan looks like. Is there 5'9" CB in top 6 teams? There is a quality in this player. It's just his height. No, no, I'm not trying to heighturbate like some other posters here.....

Is he going to play CB or CDM?

I'd be ecstatic if this means the end of Maguire.

Martínez - Varane CB please
It’s interesting to see what Ten Hags preferred CB pairing is.

He’s not going to spend 55m on a CB to sit on the bench regularly and he’s not going to bench the captain regularly

Maybe Varane fitness is a genuine issue and United aren’t sure he can play regularly any more. But he’s the best defender we have when fit

Think he, along with hopefully, De Jong, will be the catalysts in how we play. Having those two press resistant players who can really pass is going to make a huge amount of difference.
Also it will be easy for them two to just get the ground running as they know Ten Haag methods inside out. Exciting times.
Completely agree mate. We're signing players with a view to implementing a imposing brand of football and that can only be a positive thing.

And since Fergie has retired, we've wasted huge amounts of money without ever having a strategy in mind on how we want to play a proactive brand of football, and have instead carried on with a reactive, counter attacking approach.

We can't even keep the ball to a good enough standard and signings like Martinez and hopefully de Jong will go a long way to rectifying those issues. A team's defence improves instantly if they can control the game in possession along with the attack.

A fair few more CB’s than you at the mo. Wait until the teams meet, then we’ll see. Who knows?

I will bet anyone £10,000 that Gary Neville uses the phrase "ratter" to describe him at some point.
You can't say that in this day and age. It's vagina, or if you want to be absolutely accurate, labia.

People who say ‘What about when we play someone with a unit up front?’ as a reason not to buy him.

How many teams actually play with a striker like that? Only one or two. He has proven that he can more than hold his own against this type, but say it was a concern for that particular game, you play the CB partnership best suited for that fixture. Maguire and Varane for example.

Also, with the style that it seems that EtH is implementing, it is far more important to have the qualities of being a front foot defender, quick into tackle, good in 1 on 1s and a contributor to a quick transition from defence into attack, than it is to be able to deal with a long ball pumped up to striker. If we’re following our game plan he shouldn’t be in that situation very often.

Just my opinion
