Yes I noticed that too. I was yelling to just pass it. Second guessing himself and then getting cornered.
I noticed it too and he looked like a player devoid of confidence. That isn't the greatest trait to have as a CB.

I'm taking a back seat with Maguire.

I'm hoping Carrick has told him to stay in his zone

And I'm hoping the next coach can get him performing

Just want to see Scholes hit a volley.
During the Euros I learnt that a large proportion of this forum is anti english and my theory is that Maguire will never be popular amongst the Irish reds because he has been portrayed by the media as this typical English lad who causes trouble and sings god save the queen when really he is another player of Irish descent that, for all we know, has climbed Croagh Patrick barefooted.

I find this fascinating because I was born in England, yet have an Irish surname with family from Galway, Donegal etc yet I support the English football team but have views about the emerald isle that would land me into trouble in a protestant bar. Say no more.

Funnily enough he is from Sheffield which is on par as being a scouser for some people I know. Yorkshire and Lancashire have had a rivalry.
 I'm sorry to laugh at this but this was some incredible weird rant and it all stems from Maguires bad form.

Btw I'm a big fan of Maguire.

Don't know about you, but I've never had an issue over 2 days after going out. He's had both Sunday, Monday and all of Tuesday to recover and get back into the groove. On top of this, how do you know if he's been drinking, how much, and how long he's been out?

2/3 years back I played for 2 teams, one on a Saturday and one on a Sunday, and at the age of 18 in my partying phase, I was out pretty much every week, which didn't impact me whatsoever. That includes training twice a week too. Now, I'm no professional, but fairly sure it wouldn't render me exempt from any effects.

I'm not defending Maguire in any way, he's been awful recently, but this is just silly.
I mean, the science would probably suggest you’re wrong and also our own awareness is less perceptive than other people’s so likely others could’ve noticed you were still showing the effects and you might not have.

Not saying you’re wrong and you were showing but worth noting that perception differs from reality.

I do wonder what’s going on with Maguire though cause there’s something seriously amiss. Might as well explore every possibility on a free forum.

As a Leicester supporter, I’m still overjoyed at the amount we got for him. if you were to sel him in January, how much do you think you’d recoup?

The fact that this is even still discussed, tells you he isn’t world class.

I suppose it depends what you want from a centreback realistically. He can control the game from the back and having someone that is calmed and composed on the ball
Is an advantage. He is limited though and sort of limits how you want to play.

Just to give you an example, we’ve struggled against teams that press us all
Season. You didn’t do it and allowed us to play football, which we went on to win that game. With Maguire, you can’t control the press, as he is slow to accelerate and has the mobility of a road cone whilst 1 on 1. You need other players to compliment different systems, as he’s more than adequate in some games. The best teams need pressing higher up and you can’t do that with Maguire in the team.

As for the drinking thing, most elite athletes don’t drink during a season at all, as these little % gains help fitness, agility, reactions etc. The game has evolved since the Keane days and he wouldn’t get away with that now. Players smoked as well at one time, can you imagine them getting top marks on a VO2 max test now. The sport is a lot more professional now, that’s why the wire athletes have personal trainers and dieticians.

We always hang on for too long and the value plummets. Sell Maguire now before he's confirmed shite. We can get 40 million for him I reckon if we moved fast.

Fofana or Kounde
Fofana who hasn't played for 4 months and has only just started kicking a ball, think we are best of waiting for a fair few months to see how he comes back before claiming he's a better option than Maguire.

Kounde's a talent, but I don't really rate him higher than Maguire right now. Still young however so plenty of potential.

Wasn't Guardiola talking about how his players would enjoy a glass of wine after a victory the other week? I'm sure some don't drink during the season at all and maybe most don't get really drunk, but I bet there's very few who don't have 1 or 2 drinks from time to time.

Pau Torres Absolute class on the ball, very Good defender, will surely go to Barca or City even Chelsea in the next year unless we swoop.
Watch the Spain vs Croatia game from the European Championships back. Spain were coasting and then Croatia started lumping it up to a big bloke - who absolutely destroyed Torres.

I agree btw, he has looked very good when I have seen him in other games, but I wonder, does that game highlight why we overlooked him? No good signing a good CB who isnt great in the air...we have one of those

Utd would be mad to sell Maguire. At the very least he's a decent centre half and at best he's world class. Centre halves of his quality are hard to come by and I can't quite believe a Utd forum would even consider this.

A good manager will get the best out of him and turn him into the player he once was. Conte would have been ideal for him.

We need some serious coaching in defending low crosses/cutbacks from the byline, especially on Shaw/Maguire's side. Shaw scarcely ever blocks the cross/is out of position and Maguire never knows when to push out and prevent the cut back - it like there's a magnet pulling him towards the goal.

I think many would be shocked at how many goals we have conceded like this this season. Conversely of course, we never score goals in the same manner.

Kounde or Torres would be a marked improvement and probably wouldn't cost much more in net terms. Shaw is not warranting starting over Telles so far this season.

Victor Lindelof, like Jonny Evans before him, is the Shawn Michaels to Maguire's Marty Jannetty.

Except instead of The Rockers we're more like the Spirit Squad.

He was poor against Villareal, really showing up his weakness' when we start pressing higher up the pitch. He needs to be in a defensive playing team, so his opponent does not have much space and he has plenty of support.

jeezus wept, you clearly don't watch football. Maguire is superb taking the ball out of defense even in the very "risky situations" he's able to play out of the back in a very calm manner. Being caught once or twice in a season can happen but surely you will make it sound like it's every game, whereas it's the opposite, because of your agenda against him. Clueless couch potato who never kicked the ball I'd bet..
He's useless.

I for one watched my first ever Goldbridhe stream last week, was meh - with that said I think & have always thought Harry is an overpriced oaf.

As the stats don’t lie, how has our defence done statistically since he joined?

The format on these stats is horrendous, what story are you trying to tell? He has more tackles? In a defensive set up you likely would do.

Is Maguire the worst defender in the world, of course not but when you’re cherry picking stats that favour him in comparison to VvD you really are reaching. They don’t take into account the set ups & the bloody ‘eye test’, he’s done nothing tangible.

You’re like a Top Red Bingos greatest hits tonight.
I literally took every stat available and "I'm cherry picking stats". No, you don't have an agenda

Stats for defenders are almost irrelevant. You basically proved that by showing Harry fecking Maguire being in the same stratosphere as Van Dijk.

Look at Varane, Chiellini, Marquinhos and similar. None of them perform brilliantly statistically - none of them have ever been anywhere near the leaders in terms of raw numbers of tackles won, aerials won, clearances, recoveries etc....yet they're certainly among the best centre-backs in the world.

Defending is all about positioning, sensing danger, forcing attackers into bad positions, keeping a solid line. Lots more things too, none of which show up on any statsheet.
That is quite possibly the worst argument I've ever heard

I remember about 5-6 years ago Phil Jones was grading out statistically one of the best CB's in the world. His whoscored grade was always off the charts.

Stats aren't important for a CB - They have far more bearing on playing style rather than effectiveness.

Can’t understand why he played yesterday against Villarreal when he is suspended for the next few PL games. Surely Carrick should have used the opportunity to bring in Bailly and give him the game time instead. Unless he (Carrick) is counting on a miracle that Varane will be back for Chelsea and play him instead. Either way we will be stuck with a player that is not match fit against Chelsea. Poor planning indeed.

So in a game where our opponent only has 3 shots on goal and we have a clean sheet, our defense was poor. Agenda much??

Because it was a game that we needed a result in. When you need a result you don't switch out your best defender just because he won't be available in the next game. In fact, that's exactly why you do play him, knowing he will miss one game on the weekend

wasnt terrible last night, which is a vast improvement over the dog shit he has been offering so far this season. His positioning is suspect at the best of times, he is slow to react, and has poor reading of the game, but when he is on form is acceptable, personally Id still go with Varane and Lindleof as my first choices. and in no world should someone so susceptible to shit spells of form and mental crumbling be captain.

It's bad when we give him credit for not being shit, just being facetious ;) , I get your point. He did decent last night, but that's a team missing two of their starting attackers and who are struggling somewhat in la liga. Good win though, clean sheet, will take it. I think the break will do him good.
