Can't wait til kickoff! My XI would be

    DDG
    AWB Maguire Lindelof Shaw
    Pogba McSauce
    Lingard
    Greenwood Martial Rashford

Dont think Greenwood would start tbh its more likely that Mata does.

@Damien , which was that twitter account which used to predict lineup couple of hours before the match? It will be interesting to see if he still gets them into this season with some departures and couple more expected by end of August.

What I find interesting, and I never knew this before now, is the way that Maguire plays. He might play tomorrow.

I read what Graeme Sourness said about him and the way he works on the pitch. I thought he was speaking pish so I watched a few of his compilations on youtube and he's right. Half of his highlights are him playing in the opponents half, bringing the ball forward and creating chances from his pass.

He's essentially a pseudo-DM. Plus I never realised how much of a unit he is.

This was a pleasant surprise and gives me a bit more optimism moving forward. I don't know if he'll start tomorrow, and I'm predicting a 1-1, but I'm excited to see what he can do.
I just fear the way he defends is that a lot of the time he finds himself flat-footed and he’s not agile enough to recover but he obviously can improve on that tactical aspect with the right coaching staff behind him, hopefully.

I bloody hope not, we'd get annihilated with 3331. We're not Holland from the 70s.

You don't want youthful experiments but you want to drop both FBs (including the one we've just paid £50m for and looks very good in pre season) and try a formation we've never played and haven't got the players to suit?

We're playing 4231 or something very close to it.

    (McTominay)
As I said in an earlier post that a back three probably won't happen. I was just trying to emphasis that we need a three-man and not a two-man midfield. To accomodate for this we either lose a player in defence or attack. Our midfield has frequently been over-run the last few seasons because the opposition has used that extra man in midfield and both Mourinho and Ole had to supplement that area by introducing either Herrera, Fred or McTonimnay to support Matic and Pogba. Depending on the opposition they either subbed a defender or an attacker.

Chelsea used three CDs last season to shore up their midfield in one game I was watching. As I said before, its for a one-off game only.

I'm buzzing for this despite having almost no hope for this season. It's a weird feeling

Think we might scrape a close win but wouldn't be surprised with a goalless draw either

Can't wait. Buzzing! Wife made the cardinal sin of not checking the fixture list before booking a few nights away. She's spending the afternoon in the sauna while I find a pub to watch this in. Not going to miss us batter Chelsea!

I have a weird feeling. I'm not feeling optimistic about the forthcoming season. Normally that would bother me, but it doesn't because I'm more excited to see the way we play.

If we get 6th by playing some good, fast, attacking football, then I honestly wouldn't mind. Get 6th via route one/lump it forward shite football, then yes, I'd be bothered. Guess it's just a pleasant expectation of seeing something to build on with this young team.

No. He has only ever performed as part of a 3 man midfield. (AFAIK).

Always ahead of the play and gets frustrated at No 10.

Quickly pressurised and isolated in midfield two.
There's a fine line between what is a 2 and a 3 at times though.

Mata or lingard might make up the third man today for instance but are they a number ten or still a guy in midfield.

Watch this to get you in the mood before Chelsea...my personal highlight is the editing of 'A-holes' to be timed with some certain characters on video...

    Remove Lingard, and I agree!

As for the game I am just hoping for a good and entertaining match.
Will be exciting to see our new and young players.

I really just hope they don't play like shite. It's going to be a long season so I mostly want to keep whatever positivity there is for as long as possible.

Sorry if it's been mentioned in the thread already, but on TalkSport ( yes, I know ) they're floating the rumour that Martial will play up top, with Rashford out wide. I guess giving Tony the No.9 shirt could have led some to this conclusion?

I miss this trio so much. Still can't believe it got broken up the way it did. Will we ever have another front line like this at United?

I just hope we don't start with Matic. That's all I'm asking. Am more worried about the Wolves game than this one. Would take a shitty 1-0 at this stage, just to get off the mark.

It's just soooo depressing being 3 pts behind after the first game.

Does no one fancy Sanchez for this one?

    DDG
    AWB
    Shaw
    Maguire
    Lindelof
    Fred
    Mctominay
    Pogba
    Martial
    Sanchez
    Rashford

    James
    Lingard
    Tuanzebe
    Dalot
    Greenwood
    Matic
Nearly agree. Why play Sanchez? Need to keep him fit for potential transfer out. Lingard or Greenwood on the right for me.

    Rashford
    Martial
    Greenwood or Lingard

I loved the AIG years. We were one player away from dominating football for a decade. :( Feck Real Madrid.

We are going to put Lingard on Jorginho, but will to nothing else.
Rashford will continue to shoot from impossible angles.
Shaw will put in 4 bad crosses.
Pereira will come on after 60 minutes for Lingard and get in some beef with Chelsea's best performer.
AWB will struggle against Pedro since the Spaniard is not the direct 1v1 winger.
Their striker will stay away from Maguire and sit on Lindelof.
Our team will look unbalanced with PP going forward and leaving MCT alone.

1-1 until Greenwood is subbed on for Mata and he scores the winner.

    Starters:

    DDG
    AWB - Lindelof - Maguire - Shaw
    Pogba - MCT
    Mata - Lingard - Rashford
    Martial.

Pre-season would have led some to that conclusion. As it went on and Martial and Rashford spent more time together on the pitch that is how they were deployed.
