This goal was for Wales obviously, but the amount of spectacular volleys he scored in his United career was mightily impressive. My favourite was the equalizer in the FA Cup semi against Oldham in 1994, not just the goal but the fact it meant a replay, without it there wouldn't have been a double that season.

Used to love him when i was a kid.

Unfortunately when i hear his name i think of that Tevez, welcome to manchester sign and some of the other dumbshit he got caught up in at city and i have no time for him.

An amazingly player. That goal against Barca being the stand out. As a manager he's been a dull, miserable, unsportsman like tosser. Shame, really, as he was a hero of mine.

Mr Wembley, though. Scored so many times there. One of the more successful players we got rid of, too. Not many people leave this club and go to other Premiership clubs and continue winning trophies.

Yeah same here. He was never my favourite player but he was always up there. The 2-2 against Liverpool in 92(i think) was one of my first ever games with mates on the beer rather than my old man when Hughes dug us out of a hole. Unfortunately all the City stuff was to come, moaning bastard.

Palace away in 1993 for me when he scored our first goal in the game that confirmed our first title since 1967. Oldham at Wembley was another cracker but Rotterdam in 1991 will live long in the memory.

The Stretford End was a building site back then. Didn't make for a great atmosphere but I remember that Liverpool game.

Many great volleys. Like has been said previously, the Oldham volley was just so important.

I also remember him kicking an opponent in the groin from behind - think it was Sheff Utd.

Loved him as a player, poor manager and he clearly hates us - he’s not quite up there with Moyes but he’s close.

Good. I hate Sheff. Utd.

OK, I can't deny anymore that he does ''go on a bit'' -.

He was a top player for us though. Really sharp in 83/84/85, until that last season fell apart completely. Hughes's transfer to Barcelona & another Bryan Robson injury seeing that off, :(.

And then he came back, :D.

He could play, that's for sure. But seemed a yard or so slower by then. Some great contributions & fantastic goals though.

That Oldham goal was a moment that ought to be up there with any of them, in a way. It was before we got used to winning all the time & a very good team seemed to be getting itself into a bit of mess. But was saved completely out of the blue & won the Double for the first time.

Has to be right up there for players who contributed so much to the cause, versus how much of an arse they became.

Even Ince doesn't register anywhere near on my scale, even with his Liverpool nonsense.

But with Hughes, you'd be amazed he ever played for us, such is the absolute lack of any sort of affection he shows in words or demeanour.

The volley for Wales was just an absolutely insane bit of athleticism. I've never seen anyone hit a volley from that angle before or since.

The Oldham goal, I remember celebrating wildly as a kid. So critical a goal, and then we lashed them in the replay. It was just such an incredible strike, to get that power and precision while on the stretch

One of my favourite players: spectacular, strong, strong-willed and wouldn’t dive if was in the corner of the box, with no chance to score, and shot in the back with an elephant rifle. He gets complaints as a manager, but he is one of the most successful managers to have played at United.

Was a childhood hero of mine along with Robson, Whiteside, Stapleton, Bailey, and Olsen. I remember that goal really well. He won the young player of the year award that year I think, and they showed that goal over and over on football focus and Saint & Grieves the following Saturday morning.

Can remember the Oldham goal vividly. In those days there were no mobiles and all my Liverpool supporting mates were phoning me up with not much time left.

I put a dent in my parents' phone bill going nuts when the goal went in.

Might have been said before but I seem to remember it written that Fergie had a picture of that goal in his office?

When he let go of Inch Hughes and Kancheslskis that summer lol....Huges was a great player. Sometimes missed chances he should have scored but probably bitter he got sold twice - especially when we were coming into our own.

It was between Hughes and Sharpe for my boyhood favourite

I loved Sharpe. I mean proper man love. How exciting was he when he was at his best? Skinning people is always my favourite thing to watch and for a while he was amazing.

I can feel another video coming on.

bit shocked at the grief he gets now. Who cares what he's like as a manager, whats our current one like  ? He was a living Roy of the Rovers

legend in his day

seems a complete joyless tosser though

seems to not have any real affinity with United and the sensitivity about handshakes makes me laugh

His volley against city in the other derby that should never be discussed. What. A. Goal.

So many key goals in the early 90s- two against Palace in the 90 cup final, the second goal against Barcelona in Rotterdam and the last minute equaliser against Oldham in 94. But, sadly, it’s hard to separate the memory of the great player from the whinging, mediocre manager with a chip on his shoulder.

I absolutely loved Hughes as a kid and his goals in consecutive finals were the pre league winning highlights of my early love for the club, I guess all the City stuff has really soured opinion of him in the eyes of some but he was a major part of the pre league winning team and still a good part of the squad for our first double winning squad.

Went to the FA Cup final in 1990 and was heartbroken thinking Ian fecking Wright had won the cup for Palace and then with 5 minutes to go in extra time Hughes equalised and we won the replay, following season Hughes scored twice for us to beat Barca in the Cup Winners Cup final and I lost my mind jumping around the front room as I didn’t think he’d score the second from that angle.

Yeah he scored some big big goals. He and Robson won the CWC Final between them. A big game player and dearly loved by us kids of the Atkinson era.
I thought he was sold too Chelsea far to unceremoniously. He deserved more than that.

A boyhood hero of mine and still an absolute legend to me. His time at City doesn't bother me at all, and all I really remember about it was that it was a bit of fun with him repeatedly being called agent Hughes when he had a bad result. Think we won all the derbies in his time there too.

I briefly dated Mark Hughes’s ex-girlfriend when I lived in Manchester back in the mid 80s. She once told me he used to carry a tape measure around with him and get her to measure the diameter of his thighs every time she saw him - a legend died that day............:(

Great player for Utd and one of my hero's growing up. The winner against Liverpool in the 1985 FA cup semi final reply was my first memory of him. Then there was his reaction to Kevin Moran being sent off in the 1985 cup final is a classic, where he just turns round and has a grin to himself while the rest of the team are running round the referee.
And Who can forget his ball with the outside of his right foot to free Whiteside to score the winner. (My fav united goal ever).
I always tried to replicate his volleys in the playground and shout his name when I scored. Great memories.....but don't get me started on his antics as a manager when facing Utd.

There was a Cantona video that came out around 1995, in it he says Mark Hughes is the reason United score the most goals in England
