Mark Hughes

Great player for Utd and one of my hero's growing up. The winner against Liverpool in the 1985 FA cup semi final reply was my first memory of him. Then there was his reaction to Kevin Moran being sent off in the 1985 cup final is a classic, where he just turns round and has a grin to himself while the rest of the team are running round the referee.
And Who can forget his ball with the outside of his right foot to free Whiteside to score the winner. (My fav united goal ever).
I always tried to replicate his volleys in the playground and shout his name when I scored. Great memories.....but don't get me started on his antics as a manager when facing Utd.
His pass for mark robbins against forest too. Ridiculous. I don't care too much about his antics as a manager, he'll always be a childhood hero along with robbo and jesper.

Would you take a prime Hughes or Lukaku... thats how good sparky was,he is a Utd great!

I writea letter to Fergie when we sold Hughes the second time. I got a United enamel badge. True story.

Just found his 1993 goal at Selhurst Park. I think it was Ince that scored our second right at the end.

It's goals like this that remind me just how good that 92-94 team was!

Simply cannot imagine United scoring a cracker like this these days....

Quick counter, inch perfect ball from Eric and smashed home on the volley! Glorious!

Absolutely loved him and Robson as a kid. They were one of the main reasons why I stuck with United even when we were a bit shit in Fergie's early years in the late 80's

Not prolific but always scored big important goals, sometimes in spectacular fashion.

He used to get lumps kicked out of him by centre-backs but always gave as good as he got:lol:

A warrior and always left everything on the pitch. Polar opposite to many of our current fifa-playing snowflake bunch

Don't care too much about his managerial career and his general dour demeanour, there's plenty of other ex-United players who love a groan too.

He was heroic in a United and Wales shirt for me, scored some absolute belters and worked so hard for his teammates. Complete team player and scorer of really important goals.

He was even great post-United.

Loved him as a kid and his cracker goals.
Went to see the Chelsea - United game the season he was sold. loved the score (4-1) and the fact he scored their only one..

I briefly dated Mark Hughes’s ex-girlfriend when I lived in Manchester back in the mid 80s. She once told me he used to carry a tape measure around with him and get her to measure the diameter of his thighs every time she saw him - a legend died that day............:(

Used to have the squad picture of one of the 80's seasons. Hughes was kneeling in the first row. The size of those thighs never ceased to amaze me. It is no wonder he shot such bullets at goal. Just the other day my brother mentioned their size... it is something one can't forget :D

He was a great, no doubt, and never got phased by the hard tackles, used them to drive himself on. When I think of Sparky I think of those moments when he dug in and then delivered killer goals for us (the volleys were sweet but that goal against Cruyff's Barca in the Cup Winners Cup Final lives long in my memory). Don't get the dislike for him now, to me he remains a United legend so I cut him slack in all other ways he has to make a living. Don't think he's dour as much as reserved and not bothered by media celebrity personality BS that some folks seek. Other than that weird interlude at QPR he's been a solid enough manager for most clubs.

Hard as nails, great at holding the ball up, spectacular goals, but for me his best attribute was that he was a big game player.

Would obviously walk into the current team.

It's a shame he doesn't show much love towards United, which makes it hard to love him back, but no-one can take away how much he contributed and how important he was for us.

Great player but as a manager he's an annoying, whingey twat who seems to think the world and their dog is against him.

Ned Kelly, the SAS man who used to bodyguard our players and the staff, wrote a book years ago, and one story that stuck out was him saying Hughes came up to him in the players bar one night pissed and kept saying "so why does Ferguson not rate me then? Why's he not think I'm any good?" He seemed to be under the impression Ferguson didnt reckon he was good enough to lead the line at United. Which is crazy, considering how much Fergie used to rave about him when he was here.

"He never rated me. He only brought me back to keep the fans happy" is the quote I remember.

He was some player. I remember one goal he scored for Wales in the mid 1980s. They were playing Spain and he scored a volley that's up there with the best of them. Wish I could find a video of that.

Dont want to be a dick to Mark Robbins, but I reckon I could have saved Fergie's job with that ball Hughesy put in.

Who knows where Hughes stands.
If he came across anyway soft on United, all the haters would be screaming about him being a United lackey.
