Mark Lawrenson claims BBC dropped him because he is ‘65 and a white male’

https://amp.theguardian.com/footbal...dropped-him-because-he-is-65-and-a-white-male

This seems to be the go to excuse for has been pundits and presenters these days. I wonder if this will draw ‘always using the race card’ and ‘diluting real racism’ criticisms?
Maybe there’s something to this

My Dad is a 65 year old white male and he ordered 5 pieces of chicken from KFC and they only packed 3, meanwhile a black guy I follow on Twitter got all 5

It’s neither here nor there whether he mentioned Chris Sutton, the point is that it doesn’t make sense to complain that you lost your job because you’re “65 and a white male” (his words), when the person you were replaced with is from that same demographic.
Sutton is younger though, isn't that one of his bones of contention. He then directly mentions Alex Scott who matches all 3 of his issues. I can see where he feels the issue is, certainly don't agree with him.

As an Irishman, I like Lawrenson. He was before my time as a football fan but he played for us and that buys my loyalty (unless you're Jason McAteer - then you're a cnut)...... but he is talking through his hoop.

Can remember Lawro being one of the twats (with Shearer and Alan Green) who went big on wanting Ronaldo the winking show pony out of "our league" after WC 2006

That was so predictable. I knew they would pounce on this and milk the feck out of this anti white male narrative.

Hmm not really, Lawro specifically stated that he was let go because he’s a ‘65 year old, white male’.

He has been directly replaced on the BBC with Chris Sutton - a 50 year old white male…

So, yeah, it’s a bizarre claim.

If he’d just said it was because he’s 65 and accused the BBC of ageism (a wiser ploy, I would posit) then fair enough, but he didn’t.

He for some reason brought skin colour and gender into it, despite the fact that his direct replacement is the same colour and gender as him.
He's safe for a good 15 years, I reckon.

Apologies for dragging up this thread, couldn't seem to find the ABU media one? But I've just listened to the last word podcast(Irish radio station) on the weekends PL fixtures with this twat Lawrenson and bigger twat Cascarino. They spent a few mins discussing the derby as they promised they would only to spend the entire time talking about City and how they don't look great lately only for Lawrenson to finally say "I'd be worried if I was a united fan, I think City will win and win well." Zero mention of United. Cascarino spent his time defending Chelsea and Jao Felix. If Felix had signed for United he wouldn't stop going on about him being sent off in his first game.

The anti United bias in the media at the moment is just unbelievable, particularly in the Irish media for some reason. Reminds me a lot of 06/07 season when you could see how much it hurt them that we were back.

I would love it, LOVE it if we beat them now.

To be fair to him I think it’s one of those things that don’t age well but I thought he seemed very ungracious on the John Motson documentary last night. He gave a lot of credit on the commentary but put way too much focus on the idiosyncratic travel planning etc. If you really are a good companion and colleague you should help with generosity and not bang on about minor stuff in a documentary to celebrate someone.

Maybe I’m being harsh but it struck a poor note for me, he even made himself the hero of a story where he spilled coffee on John’s notes!

Never could stand Lawrenson as a player and as a pundit.

His punditry reflected his playing style and was increasingly out of date. Smash it out for a free kick....get bodies wide.... big man upfront...tired old tropes.

His humour was usually aimed at others rather than himself. Whilst Motty could be annoying and was definitely in decline in his last couple of years commentating, he generated a lot of good feeling and was always approachable.

Lawro....bit of an ego problem.

Before Lee Dixon brought morose to Co.commentary, Lawro was definitely the man.

What I truly appreciate about Lee Dixon, and what I think the BBC saw in him, is that he's not a white male. That's what separates him from people like Mark Lawrenson.
