Instead of bumping the old thread I follow protocol and make a new. Interesting to see that much of the same discussion back in 2019 is still relevant today.

One to follow this year. Starting to become a quite experienced young player. Been part of two promotions and one relegation. In football terms, that should be a grear experience for a young player. Played more than 10 000 minutes of senior football at a good level at the age of 21.

As a type I think he is really exciting. Both Barcelona and Bayern have been heavily linked to him, but Norwich rate him highly and demand a steep fee. His physique and technique reminds me a bit of Sancho, but he is more aggressive (and obviously not as talented). Probably need to improve his output a bit aswell.

If we dont get Trippier maybe Aarons could be an option next summer? £30-35 mill for a 21 year old makes more sense than £20 mill for a 31 year old (even if Trippier makes more sense for us now).

Think we want Trippier for a reason, having Aarons & AWB would basically shut the door on any opportunity Laird has to make a career here. All well and good saying "if he's that good he'd make it anyway" but it's never really the case when you've 2 established young full backs ahead of you that you paid a small fortune for. Aarons is great mind and massively influential to how Norwich play even if he doesn't put the stats up as much. Surprised Arsenal/Spurs aren't sniffing around with them both being linked to a few right backs.

That is a good point.

Still think that Laird, considering how far off he is currently (was decent, not great in League One), should not influence that decision. If Laird stays clear of injuries and fullfil his potential he will do great on a few loans. Maybe he will give us a difficult decision in a few years time (meaning we would have to sell either Laird, Aarons or AWB).

There is not much more than a year between Aarons and Laird, but there is probably three full seasons of experience, more than 100 games at senior football, between them. If Laird had been great in League One last year it would have been a more difficult discussion. But right now it looks like Laird actually need games and experience.

Not sure what to make of Aarons.

What he is good at is driving forward and joining in the attacks but when he does find himself in a position to make something happen his final pass is all a bit rushed. He played over 4000 minutes last season but only registered 2 goals and 2 assists, a player with a bit more composure and quality would have comfortably bettered that given the team he was in. He's good in possession, pretty quick and reasonably strong for his size, defensively he's fairly switched on but still a few areas he can improve on. Ultimately it's whether he finds that quality in the final third which will dictate whether he goes on to become a solid PL full back or a top one.

Interesting he's still at Norwich.

Remember this time last year when they went down and apparently likes of Barca and Bayern Munich were on verge of signing him so has a good agent for sure.

I assume he's one of the players Jamaica are trying to tempt.

I get your point, but aren't Aarons and Laird around the same age anyway?

Laird has had a host of injury problems and he might not fulfill his potential, and if he does, who knows if he will be good enough to be a RB for us in the future. As another poster mentioned, his MK Dons loan didn't really stand out so he's probably a few years of development away from the first team.

This will be Aarons second season in the PL as a starter, he's massively ahead of Laird and if we do want a more attacking option over AWB, then I'd much rather go for Aarons considering the upside and potential years ahead of him than Tripper who's last season in the PL was disappointing.
