Another free kick goal. Just goes to show how terrible the MLS is.
Just show how terrible it is only to comment and not to watch… his goal was with Argentina, so nothing to do with MLS.

Change the record.

Wasn't it more fun to just be the site's resident contrarian rather than twerking for theocratic absolute monarchies in every thread?

Messi doing Messi things.

I actually thought he was taking a sabbatical from Argentina duty for rest of 2023?

Looks like he's still fully committed and I think he'll be there in 2026 which will probably be his retirement at his sixth World cup.

He's already said the 2022 one would be his last.

About half of his goals since he joined Miami have been outside the box. It's crazy what he's doing. All you have to do is look at the xG on all the Miami games. They're averaging under 1xG per game and their opponents are usually averaging 1.50 xG at least. He's scoring free kicks and long-range goals at a super high rate right now.

Juninho on 77. Messi currently on 65. I got 2026 World Cup as his last games before retirement. Think he could do 13 free kicks between Sept 2023 and July 2026?

I don't know, he's still committed to their team given there's no really need to play from start of Commebol given six now get through automatically.

Also playing in MLS will be less taxing on him and less travelling so I can see him pacing himself and being available in some form for 2026.

Although he did say it during the 2022 World Cup, his language has changed in recent months. He'll be approaching the tournament with a different mindset. He doesn't need to win it, so, the pressure won't be there like it was. But, with the Copa America and the World Cup taking place in the USA, and given his massive spike in popularity in North America, I wouldn't rule it out as some culmination of his Inter Miami era.

If Messi makes the next world cup and Im not even sure he will be walking. He'll just stand still and pass the ball and be a set piece specialist.

Apparently so. The only free kick scored was Raphinha in a pre-season friendly, so it isn't official.
Very strange since Lewandowski is also rather good at them. But he has only been there for one season.

He knew that was a goal as soon as he made contact, thats insane
Imagine how many free kick goals he'd have if he hadn't shared free kicks with Xavi, Dinho, Iniesta, Neymar, etc, all these years.

He's too generous for his own good. He couldn't give a feck if he takes penalties either.

Tbh i think he only became insanely good at them later on otherwise he would be first on duty. Atm he's Beck's lvl where any freekick near the box almost feels like a penalty.

Just checked the stats and interestingly they're both on 65 frees for their career.

He can probably catch Pelé but even if he manages to catch Juninho, then Juninho is still the best free kick specialist of all time. He could score them from almost anywhere.

I saw a stat that he's scored an almost identical amount of FK's and Penalties since 2018. I dont know if its true though.
Its true. Messi has scored exactly 31 goals from penalty and free kicks since 2018. Exact number Crazy a player is so good in free kicks, isn't perfect when it comes to penalty kicks. Maybe has to do with his shy behaviour. Although he has also been cold during some key moments for penalty kicks.

Yeah he has a perfect record in the classicos when it comes to penalties, but he's fecked up a few other big ones. Its always been weird that someone who's got such a mental football iq and is like an alien in other aspects of the game is an only slighty above average pentalty taker.

And he will still somehow win the Ballon D'or
yeah & he already deserved to win at least 9 but they change it depends on Mess’s year

once it’s the goals once it’s the trophies & once it’s the overall performance which I totally agrees

Giving it to someone just scoring tap in goals is insane like they did with Penaldo in 16&17

He’s also retired from international football about 15 times.
What's this narrative about Messi retiring from international football?

He never actually retired did he? Not officially. I think after the 2016 good cops America final loss he was upset and said he is retiring but he never retired. I remember he still played the next Argentina game which awhile away. It was a heat of the moment thing one time.

Isn't that what happened. Can't remember exactly

although in fairness he has improved quite a bit at PK’s. Was superb in the WC at them.
