tbf, this is how poll should look like in normal circumstances, even on United forum. the fact Ronaldo was always behind even with 3 CL's in row is quite telling actually. now when he has only his individual ability against Messi's individual ability, the poll reflects more accurately what most people think of them. like I've said before, Ronaldo needs CL trophy only to stand a chance in this debate. without that, there's no contest. if Barca had won 3 CL's in row, the poll results would be something like 80% vs 20%.
The only telling thing is the timing this poll was locked and reopened

Wonder how the poll would have looked if it was opened after Cr7 scored that hattrick for Juve against Atletico.

Ronaldo has more SF goals and final goals
Definitely not in finals: https://michelacosta.com/en/messi-vs-cristiano-ronaldo-finals/

Stats aside, Cristiano was only integral in one of the four CL finals Madrid played in. The other CL final in which he scored a decisive goal, he went on to bottle his penalty in the shootout. Messi was outstanding in 2009, 2011, and 2015 so he’s definitely ahead in terms of his performance in CL finals and will more than likely put this beyond doubt in a few weeks time.

Messi also has a superior record in matches between the two, all of which have been huge matches.

It has always been Messi.

The balance, the instant control, the weight of pass, the little shimmy as he encourages defenders to shift their weight to one side and seizes on that fraction of a second advantage to go the other way. His reading of the game. I am certain he has mapped out exactly what he is going to do stage by stage before he even sets off because he ends up finding the right place to place a shot or defence splitting pass. He just seems to see the game differently, a complete 3d picture in his head that allows him to see weaknesses. He is like a coiled spring and virtually unstoppable when he gets in his stride.

I am a massive admirer of Ronaldo. He has everything you would expect from a world class footballer and one of the best ever.

It is just Messi is the best I have seen since 1974.

He’s the best goalscorer in the world and the best playmaker in the world.

If you could clone both Messi and Cristiano, I’d still be picking a Messi - Messi attack.

It is going to be a sad day when he retires so perhaps a clone would not be a bad thing :)

Surprised that Messis absolute mastery at free kicks has not been made more of. He has been the best free kick taker in the world since 2012, and very easily too. He has become a much better free kick taker than Cristiano. At the end of 2014/ 15, Cristiano led Leo by a massive 44 to 19, the difference is now down to 53 - 18. Leo has scored a massive 29 free kicks in his last 4 seasons (Cristiano has never had a 4 year spell as productive), compared to Cristianos 9. Leo will end up with more frre kicks (just like he will goals), and once he reaches 60 free kicks, will have made the top 10 all time list.
Leo will go down as one of the greatest free kick takers off all time.
Another string to his bow. Truly incredible talent.

Same could be said about Messi vs pool though.
You could make a claim for Alba having a better game than him.
Messi at his peak has had far more truly awe inducing performances than CR7. The 2011 UCL final, the first leg against Bayern in 2015, the second leg against Arsenal in 2010, the 5-0 against Real in which he did not score but was still the Best player of the match. I could go on. The first and second legs, specially The second leg, of Barcelona against Manchester City in 2015 were masterful performances by him, he was the Best player and he did not score.

CR7 will never, specially now, reach Messi's level from 2010-2012. That Messi was able to do magic with the ball and single-handedly dribble many players and tear defenses apart almost all the time during the whole match in a way that CR7 never even remotely came close. Take in account Messi's fantastic passing and assisting skills and ball control, while also being as much of a great goalscorer as CR7 is (remember when Messi scored 91 goals in 2012), it is more than obvious that Messi is technically the far superior player compared to anyone else. CR7's only advantages are physiques and a stronger mentality.

Messi was playing very well before Pep got sent off. Real in that match was disgusting, even more than Barcelona. Real was only sitting back and barely attacking, transforming into a battle, a coward performance, because when Mourinho tried to win with Real playing football, the result was a 5-0 defeat.

In no way anyone should even think to discredit Messi's second goal.

Thats because its not Ronaldos game to dribble half way accross the pitch or play through balls. As weve seen when he was at United he can do these things by the way. Just because he has now simplified his game and has different attributes doesnt mean you "cannot compare" the two because it has worked for him and the teams hes played for.
Hes has a few things on Messi as well by the way.
Defensively hes better.
Tracking back hes better
He has better movement.
Better at heading
Better with his weak foot.
Better at penalties.
Definitely more of a clutch player.
Better only in physical attributes. And CR7 dribbling and playmaking during United was clearly far below Messi 2009-2012 or Messi 2015. Technically, R9 at his prime is also better than CR7, he just did not have comparable career longevity, while Messi has.

Better weak foot does not make a better player. He is not better than Maradona.

How absolutely desperate must one be to try discrediting one of the all time great Champions League goals because Alves rolled around a bit after a knee high stud raised “tackle” earlier in the match?:houllier:

Messi was failing to score before Pepe got wrongly sent off.

He’s credited with the goal ok, but the person who destroyed Jose’ game plan was Alves with his Oscar worthy performance.

Since when was sitting back against the rules?

Did you even read the post? Messi has performed better in CL finals so that argument is invalid.
Your originally comment was that his record is better, now you’re changing it to his performance was better?

That’s clearly debatable.

His record in all finals is better.

Messi’s put in three excellent performances in CL finals, Messi has the 2017 game against Juve and arguably 2008 where he made a significant impact (despite almost costing United the match in the shootout). As usual, just looking at the goals scored column doesn’t tell the whole story.

As usual, Messi’s performance are praised to high heaven by you lor regardless of what happened on the pitch

Since you’re so keen to emphasize the Ronaldo penalty miss in 2008, how about Messi actually costing Argentina the Copa?

Messi missed a penalty against Chelsea as well which cost Barca the UCl finals in 2011-12. That also doesn't count I guess

I thought we were only talking about the Champions League finals?

Yeah, it’s weird how people think orchestrating a team to victory and making the decisive goal is more significant than scoring a penalty in the 120th minute with the game already won.

Messi is never praised for his “clutchness” though is he?

In comparison, it’s considered one of the few things people can claim Cristiano has over Messi but he’s bottled and gone missing in finals and other big games on many occasions. In reality, Ramos has been Madrid’s “clutch” player on the truly big occasions and was most influential in Madrid’s 2014 and 2016 final wins.

Decisive goal? I’d say Etoo’s was the decisive goal.

Ronaldos 2016/2017 season was better than any of Messis seaaons.
He surpassed Messis top level.

5 goals in the quarters vs Bayern 3 goals in the semis vs Athletico Madrid,2 goals in the final vs Juventus.
Won La liga and won the euros as well.

You proclaim Ronaldo singlehandedly wins matches by pushing the ball in a one tap movement against their rivals , and you cant understand that messi dribbling and going past every defender in a game on a semifinal match IS destroying Madrid on his own? This is just another laughable perception from you...

The point is the game last 90 minutes! Now lets talk about Mou's tactics you are praising . Jose because of his fear of Messi did not care to sacrifice Cristiano's ability on attack and prefered creating a defending system with xabi, pepe and lass on midfield at Home in semfinal of the champions league just to try to stop the real Goat!

This is only evidence that Mou has far more fear on Messi's capabilities and that in a match ronaldo vs messi he will do anything to try to stop messi instead of potentiate ronaldo, he knows who the real Goat is! he actually was interviewed on the touchline when Messi singlehandedly destroyed liverpool and Mou actually called Messi "God of football", this is a portuguese manager that has had ronaldo in his own team ..

Anyways talk is cheap Cal, i dare you to post Messi's highlights video of that supposedly "being handled by Jose's tactics", since i cant upload videos! and this is funny i tried to search on youtube for ronaldos highlights of that game and i couldnt find any , so if you have better luck also post ronaldos highlights so we can all see for ourselves who really was "handled" on that semis..

I have to resort to this, but to claim Cristianos top level betters Leo's top level, you have to be a serious fanboi. You're claiming that Cristiano 2016/17 is his absolute peak? This is purely based on trophies won and nothing else. Not sure other fans on here would agree with that year either. But what about his actual level that season?
He only scored 25 league goals that season. That was not peak Cristiano (he scored 35 the season before and 48 the one before that). In the CL, he only scored 12 (16 the previous season, 17 2 seasons before that).

You can validly claim that Cristiano was more clutch in the latter stages of the CL, that he won more during individual seasons than Leo, but to claim he had a higher peak?
Do you watch the matches or just look at the results and who won what at the end of the season?

Exactly, for all Messi’s flat track bullying in his 70+ goal season, he had little to show for it

Scoring in the biggest matches are the most important part of football. Maradona is rated so highly for what he did at WC86.

They are both good. We are lucky to have both plying their trade in the same generation. For natural talent I would say Messi but for the athleticism, drive n will to win and mental strength CR7 edges it. Therefore overall draw. Imagine a player with Messi's natural talent and Ronaldo's physical n mental skills. Monster !

Then why is Gerd Muller rated below Diego? Why is he rated below Cruyff?
He scored in more big matches than both Diego and Cruyff. In fact, no player in history has scored more big goals in more big matches over the biggest competitions (World Cup, Euro Champs and CL/Euro Cup) than Muller. According to your argument, he should therefore be regarded up there with the likes of Pele and Diego. But he is not. Why do you think that is?

There’s a difference between being the star player for a side. Messi gets talked about for the 2015 CL despite the fact that Neymar and Suárez did most of the scoring

Messi gets talked about because he essentially created all three situations which led to Barça’s goals.

First goal: Messi receives the ball in midfield and plays an inch perfect long pass to Alba, creating an overload on the left side of the penalty area, leading to Rakitić scoring from a short passing move.

Second goal: Dribbles from his own half to the edge of the penalty area, shoots, Buffon parries and Suárez scores the rebound.

Third goal: Through pass from his own half puts Neymar in on goal, Neymar plays a one-two with Suárez and scores.

I was talking about the entire CL campaign 2015. Anyway, the point is Messi was the star player, Neymar and Suárez were not.

Similarly Muller was not back in the day.

Again, you show just exactly how limited your definition is of what constitutes a good performance. It is embarrassing that your try to diminish his contribution for the 2015 CL. I wonder if you select your criteria based on Ronaldo's strengths or if you had such a limited definition to begin with.

Knockout stages 2014/2015:

Last 16 vs Man City:

Away: Assisted first goal. Second goal he pre-assisted by dragging 5 players with his dribbling and releasing it to Alba who then squared it for Suarez.
Home: Assisted the goal.

Quarter vs PSG:

Away: Assisted the first goal.
Home:

Semi Final vs Bayern:

Home: 2 goals, 1 assist
Away: Pre-assisted both goals by playing Suarez through who then squared it for Neymar in both goals.

Final: See RochaRoja's post.

And that's only mentioning the direct involvement in goals. If you add the chances he created (could have had multiple more assists in both the Bayern and City games just off the top of my head), the yellow cards forced and just the sheer magic the produced (Milner nutmeg for example) makes this even more impressive.

What everyone else sees: Those are some impressive performances.
What Cal sees: Only scored twice during the knockout stages, he got carried by Neymar and Suarez hurr durr.
