"We always want more," Mourinho told ESPN FC in an exclusive interview. "We always feel there is room to improve, and I cannot say that I am happy with our transfer window.

"What I can also say is that it is a difficult transfer window, and I don't blame anyone -- it is just a reality of things. The market is going in such a direction that many players are difficult to get, not to say impossible.

"Every club is powerful, and they don't want to sell or their demands are really high, so the market is difficult."

Mourinho said his objective is still to sign two more players, but even if they arrive before the end of August, the United manager says they will have lost crucial preparation time in preseason.

"Everton started really strong in the market without the Lukaku money," Mourinho said. "AC Milan, without selling players, are buying nonstop, so it depends on the moment, the objective, maybe on new owners.

"What I will say is that, a long time ago, we thought about four players to strengthen our squad, but it is really hard to do it. If we do the third and forget the fourth, I would be quite happy with that because I know it is difficult."

Mourinho said he knows Lukaku and Lindelof well -- he managed Lukaku at Chelsea and has watched Lindelof play in the Portuguese championship each weekend.

"I am happy with them, and I know that they will succeed at the club.

"The market ends on Aug. 31, so there is plenty of time, but obviously, the objective for me as manager is always to have the players as soon as possible and try to coach them in the team and develop the team with them, and Lukaku and Lindelof arrived to train in time for day one."

Sorry if posted before.

Seems like Jose wanted all the signings completed by now.

Wonder which other 2 players he's referring to.

Those parts really says a lot. Almost putting all the blame on the person responsible for transfers or the owners. 'I did my part but you didn't do yours'

Griezmann staying really threw a wrench in our plans I think.

Also I'm assuming that fourth player he mentions being difficult to get might be Perisic.

He didn't blame though. It was good interview tbh.

If we give up Martial to get Perisic, even on loan, he's crazy. I worry that will end up being the case if Perisic is considered Mourinho's must-have, rather than a DM.

If we cant sign another 2 players in a market where every one seems to have a price with their being 3-4 targets per position well then i think there is something wrong with the approach.
The thing is its after a long time we are starting to sell well (Januzaj,Memphis, schniderlin combined 50 million) and have load of hefty wages of the bill(Zlatan,Rooney,Bastian and others i.e. 1m/w). Money shouldnt be an excuse, specially when likes of everton and liverpool are bidding huge amounts in reference to past purchases. On the contrary we should be spending above 200 million to close the already huge gap in quality between us and real top teams.

He says 4 but I wonder if it would have been 5 had Griezmann came, or is Perisic the #2 after Griezmann fell through despute not being the same type of forward? At any rate if we only get one I hope it's the CM, our defense looks good and if we get the right CM we will hopefully be able to get rid of Fellaini soon with Pereira also making strides, that will see our defense and midfield in good shape, we can focus on the attack next summer.

Hardly a surprise. I don't think we improved much with our 2 signings so far. Lukaku replaces Ibra and Lindelof is a defender so he won't solve our biggest problem from last season. If we don't sign a good winger and DM, we will have exactly the same problems scoring goals as last season.

It will end up with 3rd or 4th choices in mid August. The market has gone crazy even for top teams.

I'm slightly worried that we haven't strengthened in the key areas of our squad, we need a CDM not only to replace Carrick but it is an area we desperately need depth and quality. Furthermore, cover is required for Valencia and possibly in the LB postiom with Shaw being injured.

We also need a winger that can cross and finally and even another striker but i guess the backup striker will be Zlatan when he returns end of the year.

We will surely sign one more , even two is quite possible. But have to say who ever made the transfer target(obv jose) , what was he thinking. Matic, dier, did jose seriously think they will be easy to get. Going all out on perisic and not having any other alternatives (at least till now) and failure in securing morata (dealing with Perez). It seems as if he chose players that were tough to get.

Maybe Ed gave him the impression that we could get him whoever he wanted. A bit of false bravado.

Nah Mourinho is way too experienced and street wise to fall for that unlike our boy Moyes. Inter Milan, Chelsea, Spurs and Madrid have the same scope of ambition (ambition albeit with differing capabilities) so doing business with either would be very difficult so picking a list of targets from that group was a mistake imo.

Who's this marquee signing then? That's off again is it? Following United during the close season is exhausting! Fake news every day : /

I think Lukaku is the biggest transfer, money-wise, of the Summer, so far.
So, Lukaku for £75M (not far off World Record Fee), would be the marquee signing.

You're selecting what you want the narrative to be and ignoring the bits which contradict it.

I think he is being very shrewd here. He has quietly put pressure on Ed and Co and told them that he needs to bring the players in. He very sight fully said that he didn't blame anyone yet he says "long time" .
I probably think that he was told that there is a chance that we might miss out on one signing. So he actually has upped the ante by saying this "long time" and "he is not happy" . He may actually get all 4 by saying this

I think you are putting a lot of words into those sentences that are not actually there.

It's been a very disappointing transfer window so far, that's for sure. City have strengthened precisely in the areas they needed, and we are still struggling to fill our weak spots. I think we'll do better than last season, but there's no way we are ready to regain our title this coming season. :(

This was posted elsewhere I pointed out that he seems to not actually be that unhappy as one more signing is all it takes to make him go from not being able to say he is happy to being able to say he is happy.

I'm not on board with this type of doom thinking. We have a young team with guys on the up - teams like City were/are dealing with an aging team factor we do not have.

Exactly. To just hope all this would work is a bit lame. Also, it's quite surprising we have not moved on to other targets. It is clear he never wanted james, same with fabinho it seems. Maybe jose this time is very choosy, which can be good if he gets his player but he has to move on to other targets.

I can see where frustrations come from though, as someone like Fabinho is seemingly available for the right (decent, as well) price and wants the move.

Many will be left disappointed if that would turn out to be true, spoilt brads...:nono:

Anyway, if i think there's more to come this term, we really want our league back.

How standards have fallen.

What standards are we talking about here? Lukaku was the 2nd highest scorer is the league last season and has 85 goals in 186 appearances in the PL overall. The last signing we made inside this league that comes close is RVP. Before that, Berbatov was probably the one that comes close, and I'm certain that Lukaku will outperform him.

I'm inclined to agree. I think City will actually end up signing too many players and if they don't hit the ground running I wonder what morale// the pressure on pep the Demi god will be like? I'd say it'll be another season of bedding in for them. Our squad needed a tweak. Wish we could just get another young class winger and dm though and bed then in over the season. If it doesn't work out fine but struggling to get perisic matic and moratta and using a smokescreen for lukaku isn't exactly awe inspiring to be fair. I still think we've a lot of quality here already and a manager who knows the league a lot better than pep conte or klopp
