Mourinho tells the truth (2018/2019 squad)

More often than not, Mourinho can be trusted with his comments about how his squad will evolve.

Previously, he indicated the following, basically (if I recall correctly) -

1) First season, 4 signings will come in. This happened.

2) Second season, 3 signings in. That happened.

3) Evolution over revolution (not too many signings). This has been happening.

4) Players in his plans will stay unless they are determined to leave (necessitating an unexpected replacement). This is what happened with Mkhitaryan (Sanchez signing as a swap deal).

5) He tends to freeze out players he doesn't want to stay (i.e. Depay, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Rooney)

6) He seems to use the loan system as predominantly a make or break type scenario. However, if the loans are affected by factors like injuries and the player is young/talented enough, he'll give the player another chance on loan again.

7) Last Summer, he promised an academy promotion who'd get a decent amount of games. This was meant to be Pereira but ended up being McTominay.

8) We would sign a Brazilian this Summer. It happened with Fred (and potentially more on the way).

This is what he has pretty much said about this coming season. I may well be wrong so let me know if so -

1) 3/4 players to sign. This includes a Carrick replacement for definite (i.e. Fred), a Fellaini replacement if he leaves (i.e. an AM) and 2 other areas of the pitch. He said we're fine in attack so we can assume these are defenders (i.e. Dalot at RB and a CD - not a LB as I'll explain later).

2) Players who aren't playing enough will want to leave (i.e. Blind and Darmian are basically frozen out).

3) He has said that Fosu Mensah, Tuanzebe and Mitchell will all return from loans and go into the squad. However, in line with his make or break policy, TFM and Tuanzebe didn't impress sufficiently but are talented enough to get another chance on loan, especially given Axel's injury and Palace's change in manager affecting TFM. Mitchell, however, did well so I think he'll stick with us.

4) Pogba and Martial are staying. However, given his rule about letting go players who are desperate to leave, I believe he has irons in the fire if they do go (SMS and Bale/Willian for example).

5) He was adamant that we're sufficiently covered in attack. However, this was before Zlatan left (hence links to Arnautovic, Smolov etc. but I don't think these will happen).

6) Ashley Young will play basically 50 games, i.e. is first choice. Luke Shaw will stay.

7) He was unhappy with Andreas Pereira not staying in and around the squad. I believe this will trigger the 'break' in the make or break loan system. Pereira will leave.

8) 1 academy player will make their breakthrough like McTominay did last season and will get significant game time. I'm not including Mitchell in this. Looking at gaps in the squad, I feel this will be on the RW (as CM was lacking in numbers before McTominay's promotion).

9) Jose thinks Fellaini will stay. However, this quote was in April when it did seem likely but the current consensus is that he's leaving.

Ok, hope you're following me so far and can understand the logic behind my interpretations. The next part is looking at the media chatter -

1) Most Mourinho era signings are well signposted in the papers (Pogba, Ibrahimovic, Mkhitaryan, Lindelöf, Matic). This is presumably the usual tactical approach in negotiation.

2) If there's a buyout clause, players sign under the radar (Dalot, Bailly)

3) The big exception to point 1 was Lukaku with Morata as a smokescreen. However, this was kept quiet in cooperation with Everton because they wanted to get a lot of transfer activity underway without clubs knowing they'd received big money for Lukaku.

4) Our biggest links now are with Alderweireld/Lenglet at CD, Alex Sandro basically the only LB target, Talisca/Milinkovic-Savic at AM and Bale/Griezmann/Willian/Ronaldo at RW.
5) Due to the distractions of the World Cup and English transfer window shutting earlier, United have probably acted much swifter this year. Therefore, I feel that United won't take chances in missing out and much of what we're doing has already entered the media spotlight. In previous years, some of our major targets wouldn't be out in the public domain in early June because we had more time to do the deals so could get away with initiating them later.

Therefore, let me know make some conclusions based on the above -

1) We will sign one more defender after Dalot.

2) This won't be a left back as only Sandro is seriously rumoured and latest reports indicate he's renewing his contract with Juventus. Jose indicated Young will be first choice, Shaw will stay and be given yet another chance to prove himself and Mitchell will be brought into the first team squad to add more competition. Also, Dalot can also play LB.

3) This defender will be a CD. As buyout clause buys are usually kept secret, Lenglet (who allegedly has a 35M buyout clause) is merely a smokescreen to worry Spurs into selling us wantaway Alderweireld for a reasonable price. He will be the quality passing defender that Jose expected Lindelöf to be.

4) Talisca will sign as the AM. Besiktas' coach hinted a deal was agreed in January (probably provisionally in case Fellaini leaves). Mourinho is a confirmed admirer of the player and he's much improved in the last couple of years with similar characteristics to Marouane.
5) Anything else will depend on realistic availability and if our players insist on a move. Milinkovic-Savic is a target but only if Pogba attracts an offer bigger than we signed him for (which, realistically, would only happen if he has a great World Cup and PSG sort out their FFP issues). Martial is the other big uncertainty but doesn't currently seem to have any really appealing suitors and likely won't command a tempting enough fee. The only realistic possibilities seem to be Chelsea, Bayern or Juve. These all seem to be involved in a bit of a waiting game as Chelsea's hierarchy appear to admire Martial but will want to run the possibility by their new manager (assuming Conte is replaced by Blanc/Enrique/Sarri). Bayern also might be waiting to spend the newly arrived Douglas Costa money from Juve and for Kovac to assess his squad. Juventus are apparently trying to sell Higuaín to Chelsea which could free up funds for Martial. So there could be a bit of a player merry-go-round; especially with Bale's future up in the air and unlikely to be decided while Madrid don't have a coach. Griezmann looks destined for Barca if they can free up funds alongside the other needs of their squad. The situations regarding Ronaldo, Mbappe and Neymar are all unclear too but any moves would likely just take place between PSG and Madrid and are probably dependent on Madrid's new coach and the ramifications of PSG's FFP struggles. Personally, I think all rumoured marquee names will stay or go elsewhere. The only one I see as a remote possibility is some sort of Willian/Martial exchange.

6) Most fans here will be ultimately unsatisfied with the above due to the lack of a huge name acquisition and no new LB. However, the outlay will still be between 150M and 200M (Approx figures of 160M by my reckoning - Dalot 20M, Fred 50M, Alderweireld 50M, Talisca 40M).
7) Tahith Chong will be the RW promoted.
8) Our strongest 11, to be played in the biggest games, would consist of a diamond midfield with 2 up front. However, don't be surprised to see Talisca playing from the RW slot occasionally and cutting in on his favoured left foot.
9) Dalot will already be better than expected and be 1st choice RB.
10) Fred and Talisca will surprise a lot of people with how good they are.

This would leave us with the following squad -

GK: De Gea, Romero, Pereira
RB: Dalot, Valencia
LB: Young, Shaw, Mitchell
CD: Alderweireld, Bailly, Smalling, Rojo, Jones, Lindelöf
DM: Matic, McTominay
CM: Pogba, Fred, Herrera
AM: Talisca, Lingard
RW: Mata, Chong
LW: Sanchez, Martial
ST: Lukaku, Rashford

The 'best' 11 would be De Gea; Dalot, Young, Alderweireld, Bailly; Matic, Pogba, Fred; Talisca; Lukaku, Sanchez

I realise there's a lot of extrapolation here but I feel Jose's history at United has been consistent and we can expect him to be true to form. Hopefully I've explained my rationale sufficiently. What do you reckon?

I think we'll sign 2 CBs and still keep Rojo.

I think you're right about the LB (Young) stuff and no attackers coming in, plus only only a second midfielder if Fellaini leaves. The papers ignore all this stuff because it doesn't sell but Mourinho is definitely the best source regarding Man Utd.

RW has been a concern to Mourinho for the whole season and I think he will push for Willian, even if he has to push out Mata at a bargain price. I am not sure about Talisca because the need is lesser in that sector while a no. of players can fill in that hole, Pogba included. He would still go for a 2nd MF if the price is reasonable. Romero and Shaw would be forcing for a move but due to short transfer window this summer, they might stay on for another season unless a club come in with a good offer.

Going into the season with Young as your first choice LB and putting faith in Shaw will be basically giving up any hope of a title challenge. Young is far too unreliable due to his age and injury record, he regularly misses significant portions of the season to injury and Shaw is simply just not cut out to be a Manchester United footballer. He needs a fresh start.

Don't forget last season we would have signed 4 players, not 3, if Perisic had gone to plan so Mourinho's word isn't gospel. He's also said things like "our transfer business is done" when the Rooney pursuit failed at Chelsea then signed Willian a few days later so he's more than capable of being mischievious with his comments too. I wouldn't read too much into the fact that he's not gone out and told the world we're looking to sign 7 big names this summer, it would just jack our perceived desperacy and therefore prices up and given most of his interviews are conducted mid-season it would upset our current players also.

I also think you underestimate how embarassed the hierarchy will have been to finish so far behind Manchester City this season and therefore underestimate just how much they'll be willing to spend.

A lot depends on Fellaini though. If he stays we have our back up midfielder and physical striker. If not I may agree with you on not getting our left back.

Interesting OP. I don't agree with the conclusions completely however. I want to know however about the Talisca pre-arrangement in January. I do not remember reading anything into this.

Definitely do not think we will play a diamond in Big games however.

If it were upto me, I would obviously look at a RW and another CM and I'd be pretty happy with that. Shaw hopefully will be given some game time. And if we do indeed sell Darmian and Blind, then maybe we can look for a decent LB.

My Squad predictions for next season.
GK: DDG, Pereira
RB: Valencia, Dalot, Young
CB: Smalling, Bailly, Jones, Rojo, Lindeloff, Tuanzebe
LB: Young, Shaw, Another LB (If we get enough returns from Darmian and Blind Sale)
DM: Matic, McTominay, Another CM
CM: Pogba, Herrera, Fred
RW: Lingard, Rashford, Another RW (Mata to leave)
LW: Sanchez, Rashford, Martial
ST: Lukaku, Rashford, Martial

It does go against Mourinho's ideologies in having specialists in positions. But I think what he meant was specialists in some positions, especially at DM. So I think he will definitely look to get an alternative to Matic.

I can understand why Mou will not spend on a RW, unless someone absolutely top class becomes available like Griezmann or Bale. If Chelsea are willing to sell Willian, then maybe him too.

At CM, I have absolutely no idea who Mou has in mind.

So looking at expenses incurred, we are looking at

Players In
Fred: 47 m
Dalot: 19 m
DM/CM: 50 m
RW: 80 m

Players Out
Darmian: 12 m
Blind: 10 m.

Net: 174 m.

I dont disagree. But itll be a huge mistake and we wont improve unless we fix our right wing and our left back position (along with CB, another mid and the 2 signings we already made). Mourinho needs to be more aggressive with his transfers because his scatter gun/gradual change isnt really doing anything of note. You cant take a long term and slow changing approach and then throw it all out the window when you sign Sanchez at 29 and freeze out our most promising youngsters.

Yes I agree with a lot of what you have wrote, but Mou was after 4 players last year, and for whatever reason the club wouldnt bid the £48 million for Perisic. Also if Talisca was a done deal in Jan wouldnt he have been signed by now? If we go for Alderweirald, Spurs will want closer to the £75 million his price is set at than around £50 million. I think he will look to bring in a RW CD and another CM, possibly a surprise LB/RB as Dalot can play LB/RB. Could promote Mitchell. Young can also cover both positions.

I don't know who is leaving and who is coming in. It is not that hard to guess, at least for the leaving. But I hope the next academy player that gets more minutes to be Angel Gomes!

Another fullback is still required for me as Dalot is not a nailed-on starter. Smashley is great cover as you say but if he's asking him and Tony V to play 50+ games we're in trouble next season, whether or not he adds a quality RW.

Only remember he said he likes specialist but playing so many players out of positions. And he said he sees Rooney as a forward, in the end still played him in the midfield.

If we sign Alderwield and no one else I will be happy with the summer's work.

If we sign anyone else, a right winger would be my preference, followed by a LB or another striker.

The team will have identified must have signings and nice to have. Looks like midfielder was key to replace carrick (Fred) and back up right back/left back to replace darmian (Dalot). Next priority is back up striker for when Lukaku is injured. The next priority will be replacement for players leaving that he prefers to stay but won't stop if they want to go- Fellaini, Martial etc. Anything else is a nice to have, depending on surprise shifts in the market- Alderweild if price is right, Griezmann if he stops playing around, maybe Bale etc.

I think you are on the track, although disagree on some conclusions.

Mitchell is far away from the squad, TFM is closer. Yes, he had bad second part of the season, but it is PL team and experience, which is quite different than Sotland. Add to that that Mitchell has been injured, I would be surprised if we do not sell him for a few million this summer. TFM will be in the squad for next year, I am pretty sure, although not sure how much will he play. Tuanzebe will go on loan, while Pereira is big question and will probably depend on other options we will have in the midfield.

We already have big squad, so Jose, as he already said, need to make replacements plus improvements. Like Mikhi leaving, Sanchez replacing, it should be upgrade (after preseason with us). So, talking about replacements Dalot is replacement for Darmian, RB that can cover on LB as well. Is he better? We won't know until he plays a few games (Darmian did not do much for us in reality so can happen easily), but has potential to be, and should be money well spent if proves as squad player with potential to be world class in his position. Fred is probably replacement for Carrick (although not the same type of player), and since Carrick basically did not play for us last year it is another improvement.

Also replacement will probably be TFM for Blind. Blind did not play much, so TFM will probably get his minutes and if he mature enough and show improvement can work from that.

RW is a problem, and I guess we are looking for some big signing in that position. Not sure what to think about it. I guess Chong has McKenna now and he knows what he can do, so will get preseason ticket to prove himself, but I doubt that Jose will opt for him as only solution. If he manage to get some big name than maybe we will sell someone like Mata, or even Martial to free up minutes for Rashford. Another option is for Jose to switch Sanchez to the right, if he can manage to adapt him during preseason. He will have enough time to work with him and Martial together on both flanks. We will probably know that after preseason when transfer window comes to the end.

We need replacement for Fellaini (or Carrick, if Fred is for Fellaini) and I guess we will opt for someone with more experience for that position as we have a lot of youngsters already. I would not be surprised to see us sign some vet 30+ for a year or two to backup Matic and be option on DM. Jose tested Pereira last summer in this position, wouldn't be surprised to see him do that again during preseason.

Not sure about CB and LB. If we sign CB, we will sell one for sure. We already have Bailly, Jones, Smalling, Rojo and Lindelof, while TFM can cover as well, so would be surprise to get 6th without selling one.

For LB, it is major issue for us, and we definitely need upgrade on Young to open up both flanks. Don't think that Sandro is an option as he would be included in negotiations with Darmian, wouldn't be surprised that we sign some surprise like we did with Dalot. If we sign new LB, Shaw will be sold as there is no point to wait for his contract to run out.

Mou aimed for 4 players last year however this year will be different. Carrick is retiring and Fellaini is leaving. That's two players over and above to the usual 4 signings he aims for. He also had a good look to the squad and some players simply do not make the grade.

I think we'll add 6 players (inc Fred and Dalot) with TFM, Mitchell and Tuanzebe going on loan. We'll then sell Blind, Darmian and possibly Bailly or 1 of the Jones-Smalling nightmare duo.

Such a weird OP. Just a load of random speculation posted as though they're facts (with judicious use of bold to really hammer them home). My favourite bit is the idea that we will definitely play a midfield diamond, despite never playing it once in the last two seasons.

LB is WAY more important than CB. It's not even a question. Mourinho has bought 2 centre backs to the club in two seasons and had yet to address the fullback position until a few days ago with Dalot. We do need a CB because I think Bailly needs a top partner but it shouldn't be pritorised over LB. Young cannot continue to play at LB for us. Either Shaw steps up and takes the position or we go out there and break the bank for Sandro.

Yes, I felt that too. But there are some good points raised in there as well which correlate with what Jose has said and what has been speculated in the media.

I am more interested in those Talisca rumours though.

Yes that's why another full back out of leftfield may come in or be promoted wouldn't surprise me. Depends on how much he has to spend. He's already spent around 75 million give or take. If he's after a rw and a CM, then you are looking past another 100 million+

I've banned myself from the transfer forum and never heard of the bloke. Are we signing him? Is he any good?

Very true, it'll very likely come down to priorities. To his credit Jose seems to trust Young and Valencia to do jobs down our flanks but I feel an upgrade on either side, let alone both, could be hugely transformative for our play. Without wanting to sound overly dramatic I don't feel our utilisation of the wings is fit for the modern game and I'd love us to address that this summer.

As you say though if Jose would rather strengthen CM further and RW he may think Valencia/Young is good enough for one more year.

I see the logic, but if that is truly what Jose is looking for I think he's barking up the wrong tree. We had the second best defense in the Prem last season (we let in 28, bizarrely City, despite playing much more attacking football, only let in 27). City scored 38 more goals then us last season. The games we lost were because we couldn't score and never looked likely to score, against teams at the bottom of the table no less.

Defense is not our problem, attack is, so if Jose is focused on bolstering our defense then that is a sign of playing a more defensive game next season. That won't win us more games if we can't score, and is not the football we'll want to watch.

I actually think its the opposite. We started the season banging 4 goals a game. Its only when defences started sitting back that we struggled to find openings. If our attacking transitions are fast, which can happen only if our midfielders and defenders are good on the ball, will we get the required spaces to unlock defences.

We had the second best defence because we set up defensively and our defenders cant bring the ball out. We will never start scoring more goals if our midfield is pinned to the edge of our back four.

At the moment our midfield pick the ball up level with the back four. To then get it to the forwards either the forwards drop so deep they can't do anything, or our midfielders have to dribble forward themselves and then pass it. Neither are great and both take too long. What should happen is the defenders bring the ball forward, pass to the midfielders in midfield, who can then turn and play balls to our attackers in actual dangerous positions.

More often than not, Mourinho can be trusted with his comments about how his squad will evolve.

Previously, he indicated the following, basically (if I recall correctly) -

However, in line with his make or break policy, TFM and Tuanzebe didn't impress sufficiently but are talented enough to get another chance on loan, especially given Axel's injury and Palace's change in manager affecting TFM.

Fantastic and detailed post with solid logical approach with clarity. Consider yourself followed my friend (not in a creepy way)

I've banned myself from the transfer forum and never heard of the bloke. Are we signing him? Is he any good?
I am not sure what the consensus on here is about him, but I do like the looks of him from what I have seen. He can dribble, has a very good left foot and has lots of goals and assists, albeit in a much inferior league. Mostly plays as second striker though, so it's possible he is an alternative to Savic or if Fellaini leaves, but I think he would do well on the right as well. Jose used to be a fan of him as well iirc.

With regards to us signing him, there was a report few days ago where it was mentioned he had to decide between Man Utd and China, as bizarre as it sounds. Maybe it is just a ploy for Benfica to get a big offer from China, I don't know. But I think he wouldn't cost the earth and has time on his side. I was more interested in how it was mentioned in the OP, that the Besiktas Coach said he has signed a Pre-agreement as early as January, which I don't recall reading.

I am hoping that it is BS. I just don't see where he can have a role to impact or raise the level of the team.
Yeah, it could be. Yeah, the role, even I am not very sure of. If Jose moves to a 3 man midfield, he'll play out wide right, but then you would think if some one like Griezzmann arrives as well, then his situation would be the same. I think it goes back to the 3 player plan list that was reported a few days ago. Maybe someone like Talisca is an option no 3.

With Dalot and Fred (right back and central midfielder) coming there are 4 new (by new I mean they weren't involved with the United 1st team this season, so new can refer to youth players too) players required imo.

Left back, centre back, another midfielder and a right winger.

You predict us to sign the centre back and another midfielder and for left back and right wing we'll give Mitchell and Chong a chance. I actually rate that idea. Although I would like that other midfielder to be a bit more marquee. I'm not sure about Talisca. I'd love to see us get Savic or Griezmann. Also I don't think we'll get Alderweireld, I think we'll go full Lukaku and the defender will be someone else from out of the blue like Koulibaly. Nevertheless I do think it would be a good idea to get in a good centre back and another midfielder. I'd just rather not get Alderweireld and get ripped off by Spurs. I'd rather we went big and just got Milinkovic-Savic than both Alderweireld and Talisca.

My question is this: How good do people think Demi Mitchell and Tahith Chong are? I've heard good things about them but do people think that they are ready? I hope so! I would be very excited to see Tahith Chong playing in particular.

I assume in either Midfield or Forward positions? Where do you think we need it and who would you most like?
I’m not a huge fan of Pogba I have to say, I think he limits how we have to play. I’d prefer a playmaker who gets on the ball and either keeps it instantly moving or will carry it forward. A more fluid attacker. I quite like the look of that young Russian fella, that type of player who could potentially evolve into something special. I miss the days of our midfield breaking and making runs with the forwards and wide players, creating so many options

On a more immediate level I’m on the Bale train. I want us to inject a lot more pace and xfactor! Though I wouldn’t be hugely disappointed if we got griezemann instead

Maybe the option no 3 part is true. I have seen Talisca play live a number of times at Besiktas and on Turkish Satelite and although he looks one of the better players in the league and in the side I am almost certain it is because of the level of the players around him makes him look better than he is. I remember a number of games in the CL where both I and my friends were shouting obscenities at him for screwing up attack after attack that cost them games.

The fact that I think he is rubbish probably means he would be a good buy :D

My prediction for the team:

Out: Darmian, Blind and Fellaini (and Andreas Pereira).

In:

-A centreback, but NOT Alderweireld.
-A central midfielder, but NOT Talisca.
-Either a left back or right winger, who? idk. But whichever we don't get will be where the promoted youth player is. So if we signed Gareth Bale, we'd see Demi Mitchell promoted. If we signed Alex Sandro we'd see Chong promoted.

Basically, my main disagreements:

-I don't think we'll sign Alderweireld or Talisca but I do think we'll sign alternative players in their positions.
-I think only 1 out of Mitchell and Chong will be given any gametime next season.

Great post!

Not sure about the Pogba part. He needs a defined role and with or CM now looking to take shape we will likely see the best of him like before his 3-month layoff or however long it was. We have seen that when he has options he can find them but as you said we lack the x-factor or speed in thinking/movement for there to be a viable end-product.

I agree if Bale comes he ticks the boxes you state. Also, a decent RW would probably see us get the best return on investment in attack than any other signing. Imagine having him as an option to ping the ball to rather than Pogba turning to the left and seeing Ashley young behind him and then to the right and seeing Valencia still too far back to initiate an attack. We have been lopsided and out of sync too many times to get a regular taste of what we hope for like you say.
