Liverpool fans are well known for their stupid yet creative fact and trivia spewing when they are attacking United.

One myth I have encountered many many times when I've locked horns with these bastards is the "penalty myth". Can anyone enlighten me regarding this penalty myth? Here goes:

- No one has been awarded a penalty at Old Trafford for 10 or 15 years!
- United get more penalties awarded in the Premier League than any other team!

I would dig up this information myself, but I wouldn't know where to look.

Thank you in advance

love, Satan

The first isn't quite true, though I'm sure we have much fewer awarded against us than other clubs. I'm not really sure why. Opposition fans sometimes claim that it's related to the intimidating Old Trafford atmosphere (that refs are afraid to give the penalty). But those are the same people who claim that United fans are prawn sandwich eaters ...

Maybe it's because teams don't get into our penalty area all that often?

I'm sure the second isn't true. We hardly had any last season, though I think we've had a fair few this season.

Penalties awarded against teams in the Premiership, since the start of the 98/99 season. Premiership games only:

1. Manchester United: 18 (8 home, 10 away) % at home: 44,4
2. Arsenal: 23 (8 home, 15 away) home %: 34,8
3. Chelsea: 29 (8 home, 21 away) home %: 27,6
4. Liverpool: 32 (11 home, 21 away) home %: 34,4
5. Middlesbrough: 37 (16 home, 21 away) home %: 43,2
6. Everton: 39 (16 home, 23 away) home %: 41
7. Newcastle: 44 (15 home, 29 away) home %: 34,1
8. Tottenham: 48 (18 home, 30 away) home %: 37,5
9. Aston Villa: 49 (16 home, 33 away) home %: 32,7

The rest, those who have not been in the league throughout the period:
West Ham: 26 (13 home, 13 away) home %: 50
Fulham: 41 (20 home, 21 away) home %: 48,8
Blackburn: 34 (15 home, 19 away) home %: 44,1
Wigan: 14 (6 home, 8 away) home %: 42,9
Manchester City: 26 (11 home, 15 away) home %: 42,3
Derby: 17 (7 home, 10 away) home %: 41,2
Reading: 11 (4 home, 7 away) home %: 36,4
Bolton: 28 (10 home, 18 away) home %: 35,7
Portsmouth: 25 (8 home, 17 away) home %: 32
Birmingham: 37 (11 home, 26 away) home %: 29
Sunderland: 24 (6 home, 18 away) home %: 25

8 at home eh? I'm sure we saved most of those, which has probably contributed to the perception that there are never penalties awarded at OT.

Regardless, Ruel Fox who for a long time was the only player to score a pen at OT in the Premiership gave the most sensible and obvious answer. Basically, he said what do you expect when at OT the amount of play in the visitors penalty area is vastly more than in the United area. Anyway, why the hell are Liverpool supporters going on about penalties. They have won their only two important trophies under Rafa via them. Jammy Bastards

Two great points there.

The reason why we have been the most succesful team in the premier league is of course because we get more penalty decisions in our favour then other team. But who cares, eh? :)

Statistics is your thing.

Of course the bigger teams get more penalties, they have the ball in the opposition's penalty area far more often, simple.

Wigan and Bolton got penalties at OT as well. However, I can't remember a single penalty given at Anfield last season in the league...

Ask him how many penalties they used to get when they were winning leagues most years
Almost everyone who looked at the teleprinter in them days used to Pen90 was a liverpool player as he scored almost every week

in spite of the whines of our competitors it apears - if the above stats are right - that we are given fewer penalties than all our major competitors

That's the number of penalties given against. So we have less penalties given against us ...

Apart from the low percentage of the time that other teams spend in our penalty area, there's also the style of defending. Compare Ferdinand, who is smart enough to find legal ways to defend, with Carragher/Hyypia, who seem to commit loads of penal offences in the area (and get away with more of them than they should).

Here here.

All the teams that have conceded the least penalties over the last few years are the teams that have been top or thereabouts over the same years

Ands its no surprise that the teams who have been struggling over the same amount of years are also the ones that have gave away most of the penalties over the same period

If you spend most of the time in your opponents half you are less likely to concede a penalty

The same as if you are struggling and spend most of your time defending you are more likely to concede a penalty

This is such an old chestnut. Obviously, a team that is doing well consistently in the league will concede fewer penalties because (a) it has better defenders who don't panic and dive into tackles which risk conceding a penalty (b) the opposition spend most of the game defending so have fewer opportunities to win a penalty.

You can guarantee that the team that wins the league will concede fewer penalties than almost any other team in the league and the teams that struggle at the bottom will concede more. It's simply because the top teams have the best footballers.

So for your idiot Liverpool mates just point out that conceding fewer penalties is just proof that we're a better team. That should shut 'em up :D

Again, this statistics are misleading. Because there "penalties" and "penalties". (Although it shouldn´t be like that).

It is not that hard to give us / against us a penalty when we are 3-0 up against Derby (that´s Wiley´s specialty). And then there are more important penalties in pretty closed match, which could decide everything. (Styles likes this type of penalties, that foul on Malouda at Anfield, our match at City last season and so on and on...).
